Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Mary of Teck
Answer: Prince George, the Duke of York
Princess Victoria Mary of Teck, daughter of Prince Francis the Duke of Teck, married Prince George the Duke of York on the 6th of July 1893 at the Chapel Royal, St James' s Palace. Mary had previously been engaged to George's elder brother, Prince Albert Victor, Duke of Clarence and Avondale, the heir to the British throne.
His death from Influenza during the pandemic of 1889-1892 left George as the heir presumptive. George ascended to the United Kingdom throne in 1910, taking the regnal name of George V.
2. Princess Elizabeth
Answer: Philip Mountbatten
Princess Elizabeth, eldest daughter of the then Duke and Duchess of York, became the heir apparent to the UK monarchy after the abdication of her uncle, Edward VIII. Elizabeth's father, Albert, assumed the regnal name of George VI on his assumption.
Elizabeth married Philip Mountbatten, previously Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark, in 1947. In order to wed Elizabeth, Philip had to renounce his Greek and Danish titles, and change his religion from Greek Orthodox to Anglicanism.
Before her father took the throne, she was known as Elizabeth of York. After the wedding and until her own succession, Elizabeth was titled The Princess Elizabeth, Duchess of Edinburgh.
3. Sofia of Greece and Denmark
Answer: Infante Juan Carlos of Spain (1962)
Princess Sophia, born in 1938, is the eldest daughter of King Paul and Queen Frederica of Greece and Denmark. In 1962 she married the Infante Juan Carlos of Spain. Before the wedding could go ahead, she, like her first cousin one removed, Philip the Duke of Edinburgh, had to renounce her titles and change her religion. Sophia also had her name changed to the Spanish variant of Sofia. Juan Carlos acceded to the Spanish throne in 1974, making Sofia the Queen Consort of Spain.
4. Beatrix of Netherlands
Answer: Claus von Amsberg
Beatrix, eldest child of Queen Juliana of the Netherlands and Prince Bernhard of Lippe-Biesterfeld, became heir presumptive to the throne of the Kingdom of the Netherlands at the age of 10. In 1966 she married Claus von Amsberg in a civil ceremony which was followed by a religious blessing in the Westerkirk in Amsterdam. Beatrix acceded to the throne in 1980, reigning until 2013 when she abdicated in favour of her son Willem-Alexander in 2013.
Her age of 75 at the time made her the oldest reigning monarch in the Netherlands history.
5. Anne of Edinburgh
Answer: Mark Phillips
Princess Anne, daughter of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh married Mark Phillips in Westminster Abbey in 1973. At the time, Phillips was an acting Captain in the British army and while he was offered an honorary Royal title, he declined it, preferring to be known as Captain. Anne and Captain Phillips are both accomplished equestrians, with Phillips winning a team gold medal at the 1972 Olympic Games. Anne, as the eldest and only daughter of a reigning monarch, assumed the title of The Princess Royal in 1987.
She and Captain Phillips divorced in 1992.
6. Astrid of Belgium
Answer: Archduke Lorenz of Austria-Este
Born in 1962 to King Albert II and Queen Paola, Princess Astrid is the sister of Philippe, the current reigning King of Belgium. In 1984 Astrid married Archduke Lorenz of Austria-Este, who is now the head of the Archducal House of Austria-Este. She and Lorenz have five children, and in 1995 Lorenz was made a Prince of Belgium.
7. Caroline of Monaco
Answer: Prince Ernst August of Hanover
Princess Caroline of Monaco is the eldest daughter of Ranier III of Monaco and former actress Grace Kelly. Caroline's marriage to Ernst August, Prince of Hanover in 1999 was her third wedding, following a divorce in 1980 (Philippe Junot), and the death of Stefano Casiraghi in 1990. Caroline is styled Her Royal Highness the Princess of Hanover, despite Hanover losing its throne in 1866.
8. Victoria of Sweden
Answer: Daniel Westling
Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden is the eldest daughter of King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia. She is the heir to the throne ahead of her younger brother due to the 1979 amendment to the Act of Succession which introduced absolute primogeniture. Victoria married Daniel Westling, her former fitness trainer, in 2010.
At her wedding, she broke with the Swedish tradition of the couple walking down the aisle, and was accompanied by her father instead. Many people were upset, claiming the western tradition of giving away the bride treated her as a possession, and the church issued a statement expressing their disapproval.
The Royal House countered and said the King was walking the heir to the throne down the aisle to meet the man they approved of, nothing more.
9. Eugenie of York
Answer: Jack Brooksbank
Princess Eugenie is the youngest daughter of Andrew, Duke of York and Sarah, Duchess of York, and at the time of her birth was 6th in line of succession to the British throne. She first met Jack Brooksbank, her second cousin twice removed, in Switzerland while on holiday. They married at St Georges Chapel, Windsor in 2018, with the venue being suggested by Eugenie's grandmother, the Queen Elizabeth II. Eugenie opted to not wear a veil, instead wearing an open-backed gown to proudly reveal a scar from a scoliosis corrective operation in 2002.
While many grooms are given titles upon marriage to members of the Royal Family, the recent trend away from this meant that Brooksbank did not become the Earl of Northallerton, as speculated by the media.
10. Mako Akishino of Japan
Answer: Kei Komuro
Princess Mako Akishino of Japan is the eldest daughter of Crown Prince Fumihito and Crown Princess Kiko, and is the niece of the Emperor Naruhito. When she married Kei Komuro, who works for an American law firm, in 2021, she was forced to relinquish her royal title.
The Japanese Imperial Family can trace its ancestry back to Emperor Kinmei, 6th century BC, and is thought to be the oldest, continuous, hereditary monarchy in the world. The Imperial House Law allows Princes to marry commoners and confer royal status on their wives, however, Princesses, in order to remain a Princess, must marry a prince or remain unwed. No male descendants were born into the Imperial family for more than 40 years until Mako's brother, Prince Hasahito was born in 2006.
