Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these American Presidents has NOT been the recipient of a Nobel Peace Prize?

Answer: Ronald Reagan

Roosevelt received his prize for helping to broker the end of the Russo-Japanese war, while Woodrow Wilson won it for his 14-points and promotion of the League of Nations. Carter won it in 2002 for his endless promotion of world peace through various activities. Reagan, who participated in ending the Cold War, never won a prize, but his counterpart Mikhail Gorbachev did!
2. The Nobel Peace Prize winner in 1979 was ethnically Albanian (born in what was then the Ottoman Empire) and her real name is Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu. By what name was she universally known?

Answer: Mother Teresa

Mother Teresa did wonderful work during her lifetime helping abandoned children and the dying in Calcutta. She founded her Missionaries of Charity there in 1948, after becoming an Indian citizen!
3. What world organization received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1965 for its work in helping children around the world?

Answer: UNICEF

UNICEF stands for the 'United Nations Children's Fund'. (Until 1953 it was called the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund: hence the six letters of the acronym).
4. This Polish trade-union leader won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1983 in part for his 'solidarnosc' movement. What was his name?

Answer: Lech Walesa

English speakers know the movement better as 'Solidarity', a confederation of trade unions. This movement changed the political system in Poland forever, helping transition the country toward a pluralistic government.
5. This famous U.S. chemist not only won a Nobel Prize in Chemistry, in 1954, but also won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1962 for his outspoken opposition of nuclear testing. Who was he?

Answer: Linus Pauling

Pauling not only worked on discovering the nature of chemical bonds, and discovering that many proteins contained helical structures, but also was a tireless spokesman against nuclear testing...good man!
6. What was the name of the Burmese (Myanmar) woman who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991, and later was imprisoned for her protests of the Burmese government?

Answer: Aung San Suu Kyi

Aung San Suu Kyi is the daughter of Aung San, the 'father of the country' according to many Burmese. Unfortunately, Aung San was killed before Burma was officially made independent. Suu Kyi has worked toward pressuring the omnipresent military regime to open up Burmese politics to a more pluralistic form, but she has not quite been successful yet.
7. What international organization won Nobel Peace Prizes during both World War 1 (1917) and World War 2 (1944) for its work in caring for the casualties of war?

Answer: The Red Cross

The International Red Cross was founded by Jean Henri Dunant, a Swiss philanthropist, in 1864 during the Geneva Convention. He had tended to the wounded during the Battle of Solverino in 1859, leading to the founding of this wonderful international body. Clara Barton was the founder of the American Red Cross.
8. Much to the chagrin of the Chinese government, this exiled leader won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989. Who was he?

Answer: Dalai Lama

The 1989 Nobel Peace Prize winner was none other than the 14th incarnation of his holiness, the Dalai Lama. He was forced into exile in 1959 from Tibet when the Communist Chinese seized control of the country. From that time on, he worked without end toward promoting world peace in the typical Buddhist non-violent manner.

The Dalai Lama set up a Tibetan government in exile in Dharmsala India, where he has continuously worked toward regaining Tibet's independence.
9. What Secretary-General of the United Nations won the Nobel Peace Prize posthumously in 1961, after he had died in a plane crash?

Answer: Dag Hammarskjold

Hammarskjold opposed the British during the 1956 Suez Crisis and was attempting to mediate the crisis in Zaire when he died in a plane crash...how tragic!
10. Who of the following was NOT a Nobel Peace Prize winner from South Africa?

Answer: Rigoberta Menchu

Menchu was from Guatemala, and won for her work in exposing the poverty and corruption there (although her work has now been largely discredited). The other three winners were all from South Africa, and all played a role in ending Apartheid there. Thank you for trying this quiz!
