She was born to Rev. George and Cassandra Austen in Hampshire, England. Here, Jane and her sister Cassandra stayed until they were sent to boarding school.

Jane and Cassandra were at the boarding school in Southampton when they caught the disease.

Around Jane's twentieth birthday, she enjoyed a youthful flirtation, but they could not have married as the Austens weren't sufficiently rich for the Lefroy family.

Following the sending away of Tom Lefroy, Austen came close to marriage only once and very briefly. She received a proposal from an old friend, Harris Bigg-Wither. She accepted but after thinking the matter over in the night, she retracted her acceptance the next morning.

Jane Austen died in Winchester on July 18, 1817 at the age of forty-two.
