Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1938, Ceril Heycock married the man she had met at art school, Birabongse Bhanudej and many years after their divorce in 1949, the pair remarried in 1983. Of which country was Birabongse Bhanudej a member of the royal family?

Answer: Siam (Thailand)

Heycock and Prince Bira first married in 1938, the first year that the speed obsessed Prince entered the European Motorsport Championship. He continued to race in various championships and following their divorce in 1949, his motorsport career took off when he lined up in the first ever Formula One race, held at Silverstone in 1950. He continued to race in Formula One until 1955, gaining several top ten places and making his mark in his cars, painted in the colour now known as Bira Blue.

He also competed in sailing events at the Olympic Games of 1956, 1964, 1968, and 1972 as well as marrying a further four times between 1951 and 1967. His final marriage came in 1983, when he remarried his first wife, Ceril, and they were together until his death in London in 1985.

Bonus info: Prince Bira's grandfather, King Mongkut, was the inspiration for the musical, "The King And I" (1951).
Extra bonus info: Prince Bira was the first Thai driver in Formula One and there wouldn't be another until Alex Albon in 2019, 69 years later.
2. Which president of the United States was forced to marry the same woman twice after it was revealed that their first union was null and void due to her not being divorced?

Answer: Andrew Jackson

Jackson married Rachel Donelson in 1791, following her divorce from Lewis Robards. When it became apparent that Robards had not secured the divorce, her marriage to Jackson was declared null due to it technically being bigamy. The couple remarried, legally this time, in 1794, and remained together until her death in 1828. Tragically, Rachel never got to be First Lady, as she died of a heart attack days after her husband's election and before his inauguration.

Her role as First Lady was fulfilled by her niece, Emily Donelson.
3. Actress Sarah Miles is well remembered for her starring role in "Ryan's Daughter" (1970), but who was the man who became her husband in 1967 and 1988?

Answer: Robert Bolt

While well respected as a playwright, Bolt found a wider audience with his screen writings for films such as "Lawrence of Arabia" (1962), "Doctor Zhivago" (1965), and "A Man for All Seasons" (1966), as well as winning two Oscars.
By the time he wrote the screenplay for "Ryan's Daughter" (1970) he had been married to Sarah Miles for three years, but by 1973 their marriage was on a downhill slope after the promising young screenwriter, David Whiting, with whom Miles had been having an affair, was found dead in her hotel room. She was eventually acquitted of all involvement in his death, but the incident seriously harmed her career and wrecked her marriage which finally ended in divorce in 1976.

In 1979, Bolt suffered a severe stroke which paralysed his right side and gave him a serious speech impediment and Miles began caring for him, leading to their love for each other reigniting and their remarriage in 1988. The couple remained together until 1995, when, following a long illness, Bolt died.
4. Real estate developer, Merv Adelson, married which well known journalist in 1986, two years after their divorce was finalised?

Answer: Barbara Walters

Walters was the first woman to co-host an American news programme when she took on the role for "The Today Show" (1952 onwards) in 1974. Adelson was the man behind the Las Vegas Country Club, as well as the Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center in the city, who, in 1969, co-founded Lorimar Productions. Lorimar gave us hit shows such as "The Waltons" (1972-1981) and "Dallas" (1978-1991), both of which lasted longer than the marriages between Adelson and Walters, which were between 1981 and 1984 and then between 1986 and 1992.
5. One would expect actress Talulah Riley to be well known, but the entrepreneur she married and divorced twice is probably more famous. Who is this man?

Answer: Elon Musk

Riley appeared in TV shows such as "Doctor Who" (1963 onwards) in UK in 2008, and American sci-fi show, Westworld (2016 onwards), between 2016 and 2018. She also has made film appearances including in the remakes of the St Trinian's movies, "St Trinian's" (2007) and the 2009 sequel "St Trinian's: The Legend of Fritton's Gold"
In 2010, she tied the knot with Musk, the man behind the Tesla car company and aerospace manufacturer, SpaceX.

This marriage lasted just two years before ending in divorce in 2012, but in 2013 they reconciled and remarried, this time the union lasting three years before their divorce in 2016.
6. Marriage can be a tricky thing, especially when your husband has an affair with your younger sister. Which artist, twice married to Diego Rivera, painted "Memory, The Heart" (1937) to depict her anguish at such a situation?

Answer: Frida Kahlo

Kahlo and Rivera were both undoubtedly immensely talented artists and their relationship was passionate and tempestuous. They first married in 1929, and both were fond of using Frida's sister, Cristina, as a model, with Rivera often painting her nude. The affair between Cristina and Rivera is believed to have started in 1934 and Frida painted "Memory, The Heart" in 1937 in response to the affair. The painting depicts Frida with a metal rod going through an empty space in her chest while her heart lies bleeding on the ground, and is interpreted as showing the pain she felt as the result of the affair.

Frida and Rivera first divorced in 1939 but remarried in 1940, although this time, although the marriage was much less turbulent, there was very little time for fidelity. Rivera had many affairs and Frida had many trysts with both male and female lovers. They remained married until Frida's death in 1954, and she is today recognised as an important figure, not just in the art world but also in the feminism movement and the LGBTQ+ movement.
7. In 2008, writer, Jan Morris married Elizabeth Tuckniss for the second time. What made this union unusual?

Answer: Jan had undergone gender reassignment surgery

In 1949, Elizabeth Tuckniss married writer and journalist James Morris. In 1953, Morris was the journalist assigned by "The Times" newspaper to cover Edmund Hilary's attempt at scaling Everest, and he was the journalist who managed to break the news on the morning of the coronation of Elizabeth II. Morris would also cover the Suez crisis for the "Manchester Guardian" and interview French and British air force pilots after their involvement had been denied by both governments. Morris obtained proof that both had been in action in support of the Israelis and French personnel admitting to using napalm. His reports shamed both UK and France into withdrawing their forces and played a large part in the resignation of British prime minister, Anthony Eden, just a few months later.

In 1972 Morris underwent gender reassignment surgery in Morocco, as the surgery was only possible in UK if a couple first divorced and Morris and Tuckniss refused to do so at the time although they did later. In 1974 Morris published "Conumdrum", her first book under her new name of Jan Morris and she went on to become a much respected writer on travel and history. In 2008 Morris and Tuckniss re-married, this time in a same sex civil ceremony and remained married until Morris' death in 2020. Her love for Tuckniss shone as brightly on her death as it had on their first marriage in 1949 and Morris' burial plot awaits Tuckniss, with her tombstone reading, "Here are two friends - Jan and Elizabeth Morris - at the end of one life."
8. Alicia Larde Lopez-Harrison first met her twice future husband in an advanced calculus for engineers class in 1955. Which well known mathematician did she say "I do" to twice?

Answer: John Forbes Nash Jr.

Larde Lopez-Harrison had dreams of becoming a nuclear scientist and seemed to be well on her way to achieving her dream, when, as just one of sixteen women, she was accepted into M.I.T. in 1955. Her career took a back seat however when she met Nash, an instructor in the mathematics department, and by 1957 the pair were married. Alicia gave up her career dreams when, as dramatised in the 2001 film, "A Beautiful Mind", Nash began developing signs of schizophrenia, and she began caring for him. His illness put a huge strain on the marriage and in 1963 the couple divorced.

Nash spent the majority of his time between 1961 and 1970 in various hospitals and when he was finally discharged in 1970, he went to live with Alicia as a guest. The stability of this arrangement greatly helped with Nash's condition and he began to emerge from his schizophrenia in the mid 1980s, as well as, in 1994, receiving a Nobel Prize in Economics for the game theory work he completed many years earlier. In the spring of 2001, Alicia and John were remarried, 38 years after their divorce, with Alicia commenting, "We thought it would be a good idea. After all, we've been together most of our lives." Tragically, both were killed in 2015, when the taxi in which they were passengers struck a guard rail, ejecting both Nash and Alicia.
9. In 2013, Suzanne Harthern remarried Benny Hinn, from whom she had been divorced in 2010. What is Hinn's line of work?

Answer: Televangelist

Israeli televangelist, Hinn married Harthern in 1979, but the marriage broke down and ended in divorce in 2010 with tabloid paper,"National Enquirer" claiming that Hinn and fellow televangelist Paula White had been having an affair. Hinn denied these allegations and in 2012 announced that he and Harthern were reconciled and their earlier split had been due to him being so busy with work that he had neglected his family, along with Harthern's addiction to prescription drugs and antidepressants.

Hinn and Harthern remarried in 2013 at the Holy Land Experience theme park in Orlando, Florida, with Pentecostal minister, Jack Hayford, describing the remarriage as "a miracle of God's grace".
10. If at first you don't succeed, try, try, try again. Which actress, of the 1930s married entertainer Milton Berle in 1941 and 1949, and then married theatre impresario, Billy Rose in 1956 and 1961?

Answer: Joyce Matthews

Matthews appears to have liked the taste of wedding cake as between 1936 and 1974, she was married seven times to five different men. Her second wedding in 1941 was the first for her husband Milton Berle and it ended in divorce in 1947, but the pair remarried in 1949, with Berle quipping, when asked why he had remarried Matthews, "She reminded me of my first wife".

This union also ended in divorce after just nine months, but six years later, Matthews was walking down the aisle, this time to marry Billy Rose.
This marriage lasted from 1956 to 1959 before the divorce lawyers were called in and just two years later she remarried Rose in a Christmas wedding in 1961. Unfortunately there was still no everlasting love for Matthews and the pair divorced in 1964.

She would go on to marry Ivor Studebaker Schmidt and then in 1974, fellow actor Don Beddoe, with whom she had her longest relationship, remaining together until his death in 1991.
