Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Can you tell me where the first historical information about Tolkien's family comes?

Answer: Germany

Yes, the Tolkiens come actually from Germany. In the 18th century they arrived in England, probably with the Hanoverian dynasty. The name "Tolkien" can be translated into English as "Foolhardy" - it was said to be a nickname of one of the knights of the Holy Roman Empire that stuck to his house.
2. What was the first name of JRRT's father?

Answer: Arthur

That was Arthur Reuel Tolkien to be precise. The middle name "Reuel" was traditional in the family for the oldest son. Poor Arthur died too soon in South Africa...
3. JRRT had a sister.

Answer: False

No, there was only a brother, Hilary.
4. Mabel Tolkien, mother of JRRT, finally succumbed to what disease?

Answer: diabetes

Meanwhile, she converted to Catholicism and the family ceased to help her. There were hard times for poor Mabel and the boys...
5. When Mabel passed away, a Catholic priest took great care of the boys. What was his name?

Answer: Father Francis Morgan

He did much good for them. He also was a great pipe-smoker, being thus a model for Gandalf and the hobbits (at this point, of course.)
6. "Bagme Bloma", a poem written by JRRT, uses a language that is now extinct for many centuries. Which one?

Answer: Gothic

JRRT spoke so many forgotten languages... And of course he knew Old English too! AFAIK he even spoke Polish (or some Polish I'd rather guess.)
7. Which work of JRRT was published posthumously and edited by Christopher Tolkien?

Answer: Silmarillion

JRRT was working on "Silmarillion" almost his entire life; from WWI to the 70's. When he passed away, it still wasn't quite finished! Christopher had then to make a good deal of work to shape it finally.
8. What was the maiden name of JRRT's beloved wife Edith?

Answer: Bratt

Actually she was an illegitimate child, but who her father was remains a secret...
9. There are names of a pair of Middle-earth lovers put on Edith and JRRT's tombstone. Which one from the below fits this description?

Answer: Beren and Luthien

Characters from "The Silmarillion".
10. Who wrote the most well-known "official" biography of Professor Tolkien, imaginatively entitled 'JRR Tolkien: A Biography'?

Answer: Humphrey Carpenter

Mr. Carpenter has been allowed to research many family papers and to talk with family friends. Christopher continued to work in editing his father literature, long after the latter's death. Peter Jackson is a director of... come on, you know what. Stewart Carpenter I've just made up.
