Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Followed her husband to war for eight years.

Answer: Martha Washington

Martha Washington (1731-1802) resided with her husband in winter camps throughout the Revolutionary War. Her time there would have been mostly with theme officers and their wives rather than with the common soldiers. George Washington was actually Martha's second husband. She had previously been married to Daniel Custis.
2. Her sister Mary gets all of the approval.

Answer: Martha of Bethany

Martha is mentioned several times in the Gospels. In Luke's Gospel, Martha is the sister who is busy with household tasks when Jesus visits while her sister Mary sits near Jesus to hear his words. When Nartha complains to Jesus that Mary has left her all of the work, Jesus says she shall not be denied her choice.

In John's Gospel, Martha is present when Jesus raises her brother Lazarus from the dead.
3. She taught at the University of Virginia.

Answer: Martha Derthick

Nartha Derthick (1933-2015) was educated at Hiram College and Radcliffe College. During her career, she held several positions including director of the government studies program at the Brookings Institute and professor of government and foreign affairs at the University of Virginia.

In the 1990s, I was enrolled in a government seminar taught by Professor Derthick. I remember that there were only 12 students enrolled and we sat around a large round table, she always had a half podium on the table behind which she stood to teach the seminar.
4. She went to jail for insider trading.

Answer: Martha Stewart

Martha Stewart (born 1941) may be equally known for her magazine named "Martha Stewart Living" and the long running television series of the same name. She later hosted a talk show, "The Martha Stewart Show".
5. She was known for her dancing.

Martha Graham (1894-1991) was a well-known dancer and choreographer. Her Martha Graham Dance Company, founded in 1926, is the oldest in the United States. One of her best known works is the 1944 ballet "Appalachian Spring". Graham was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1976 and named "dancer if the century" in 1998 by "Time" magazine.
6. She was one of the "Weather Girls".

Martha Gellhorn (1908-1998) was the third wife of author Ernest Hemingway or, depending on your perspective, he was her first husband. In her career she covered several other events including the Italian front in World War II, the Vietnam War, and the Arab-Israeli conflict.
9. She was a convicted murderer.

Answer: Martha Place

Martha Place (1849-1899) would become the first woman to be executed in the electric chair. She had been convicted for the murder of her stepdaughter Ida. Two women before Martha Place had been sentenced to die in the electric before her, but had managed to avoid execution.
10. She wrote the "Elsie Dinmore" books.

Answer: Martha Finley

Under the pen name Martha Farquharson, Martha Finley (1828-1909) published numerous books including the 28 books of the "Elsie Dinmore" series.
