Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where is Seamus originally from?

Answer: Ireland

We learn that Seamus is definitely Irish (as his name suggests) in "Goblet of Fire" where he supports his team. His birth date is not exactly known, but believed to rather be in 1980 than in 1979 (the range supported by being in Harry's class). He is a half-blood, with only his mother having been a witch.

By the way, the first three movies give Seamus' last name as "Finnegan", but the spelling according to the books is "Finnigan".
2. What was unusual about Seamus' sorting ceremony?

Answer: The hat took a very long time to decide.

Besides having Gryffindor qualities, Seamus also possesses qualities of at least one other house - presumably Hufflepuff, given his loyalty and fairness. His academic achievements do not really portray him as a Ravenclaw and he has not exhibited any Slytherin traits.
3. Seamus is not exactly the most talented wizard - what kind of mishap happens to him with some regularity?

Answer: He sets things on fire.

Seamus is a born fire mage as it seems, as he tends to accidentally set things on fire. This first happened to him in the first days when the students tried to levitate a feather. Later this innate ability was used for good purpose in the Battle of Hogwarts where he was charged with blowing up a wooden bridge.
4. Which House ghost did Seamus ask a rather impolite question during his first weeks at Hogwarts?

Answer: Sir Nicholas De Mimsy-Porpington

During their first encounter, Seamus asked Nicholas, better known as "nearly headless Nick", how it is possible to be just nearly headless. Sir Nicholas responded to the question with a rather graphical demonstration that shocked several of the first years!
5. In the only training session of Lockhart's duelling club during year two, who did Seamus practice with?

Answer: Ron Weasley

When Seamus and Ron duelled in "Chamber of Secrets", Ron had one of his all too frequent wand malfunctions. The blast of uncontrolled energy knocked Seamus out. This setback, however, did not prevent Seamus from progressing as a duellist and becoming one of the best duellers at Hogwarts - an ability that came in very handy during the Battle at Hogwarts.
6. During the third year, how did Seamus' Ridikkulus charm deal with the boggart he was facing?

Answer: It silenced the boggart.

Seamus' boggart in "The Prisoner of Azkaban" took the shape of a banshee, a wailing spirit that foretells death. As such, the best defense was to take its voice away and that was exactly what Seamus' charm did. Seamus earned five house points for his successful spell.
7. What relationship connected Seamus to Lavender Brown?

Answer: Lavender was his year four Yule Ball partner.

While Lavender was originally much closer to Ron than to Seamus - a relationship that ended rather suddenly when she discovered that Ron and Hermione were an item - she was indeed Seamus' partner for the Yule Ball in "Goblet of Fire". Alas, while the relationship between the two might have rekindled later, it was not meant to be, as Lavender died in the Battle of Hogwarts.
8. Harry Potter managed to conjure a fully formed Patronus in year three. When did Seamus first manage the same feat?

Answer: Year five

Seamus Finnigan was certainly not the strongest when it came to summoning a Patronus - his first fully formed Patronus came only in "The Order of the Phoenix", during his fifth year, and it was never even found out what exactly it was. The best description anyone could give was "something hairy". Later on, however, that very spell would prove crucial.
9. Seamus was not one of the early Gryffindor Quidditch players, but he did try out for the team in "The Half-Blood Prince". Which position did he try for?

Answer: Chaser

During year six, the Gryffindor team had to replace Katie Bell, a longtime chaser for the house, after she had a magical accident. Among those who tried out was Seamus, but the by then undisputed captain of the team, seeker Harry Potter, chose Dean Thomas over Seamus for his superior performance, even though he knew that the choice would hurt Seamus.
10. Seamus was seen in multiple key scenes of the Battle of Hogwarts. Which of these did he NOT do?

Answer: Recover one of the horcruxes

Seamus had no part in the crucial fight for the horcruxes himself, but he proved his worth both at Wooden Bridge, where his fire magic prevented a Snatcher invasion, and later, by casting a crucial fox Patronus that bought Harry enough time to manifest his own, stronger, one that would drive the huge contingent of Dementors away - without Seamus' interference, it would most likely have been over for Harry at that point.
