1. Laura Fraser (b.1976), actress

Answer: USA

Born and raised in Glasgow, Laura Fraser appeared in an episode the Glasgow-set television crime drama "Taggart" at the age of 20. She has split time between the States and Glasgow since the early 2000s, including time spent appearing in both "Breaking Bad" and "Better Call Saul", as a character named Lydia. Fraser's American accent for that role is said to be so good that most people believe her to be an American.
2. Leigh Kasperek (b.1992), cricketer

Answer: New Zealand

All rounder Leigh Kasperek was born in Edinburgh, and is considered to be one of the best spin bowlers in women's cricket. She played for the Scottish national team from 2007 until 2012, making her senior national debut at the age of 15, playing against English county elevens.

She played for one season in Australia, before switching to a team in New Zealand, and after a few years qualified to play for the New Zealand national team.
3. Agnes McLaren (1837-1913), doctor

Answer: France, India

Born in Edinburgh, Agnes McLaren studied medicine in France and eventually was recognised as a member of the medical profession in England, Scotland, Ireland and France, where she had a practice in Cannes. In the 1890s she travelled to India as a Roman Catholic missionary, in order to be able to provide medical attention to women in that country, who were barred from being attended by male doctors. She is buried in France.
4. Lana Clelland (b.1993), footballer (soccer player)

Answer: Italy

Lana Clelland was born in the Scottish city of Perth, and began her career playing for various clubs in her home country. Since 2014 she has played in Italy's women's Serie A, appearing for a number of clubs including Fiorentina. She has also appeared for Scotland's national team, including an appearance in the FIFA Women's World Cup in 2019.
5. Lady Mary Victoria Douglas-Hamilton (1850-1922), noblewoman

Answer: Monaco, Hungary

This daughter of the 11th Duke of Hamilton was born at Hamilton Palace in Lanarkshire, Scotland, and married, first, Prince Albert I of Monaco in 1869. Their son ascended to the throne of the principality as Louis II, and Lady Mary is a direct ancestor of Prince Albert II who ascended the throne in 2005.

This first marriage was dissolved in 1880, and Lady Mary married again, this time to a Hungarian count to whom she remained married for forty years. She died and is buried in Hungary.
6. Isobel Gunn (1781-1861), fur company labourer

Answer: Canada

Born in the Orkney Islands, Isobel Gunn was quite the character. In order to gain employment with the Hudson's Bay Company, she disguised herself as a man and took the name John Fubbister. She maintained the pretence long enough to become the first European woman to venture into Rupert's Land in what is now western Canada, but was found out when she gave birth to a child in 1807. Mother and child were soon sent back home to Scotland, where Isobel eked out a living a a mitten maker.
7. Jean Ewen (1911-1987), nurse

Answer: China, via Canada

Although she was born in Scotland, Jean Ewen moved with her family to Saskatchewan as a child, and is usually described as Canadian. She went to China as a medical missionary in 1932, and returned later in the decade with Dr Norman Bethune serving as his interpreter as well as in her capacity as a nurse.

She wrote of her work in "China Nurse", a memoir published nearly fifty years later.
8. Morag Beaton (1926-2010), opera singer

Answer: Australia, Germany

Edinburgh-born Beaton's career as an operatic soprano took off, after she had made her debut in Berlin in 1962. She toured Australia in 1965 with a company that included Dame Joan Sutherland, singing various soprano roles around the country for a number of years thereafter. Her best know role came to be the title role in Puccini's "Turandot". She died in Sydney, Australia, aged 83.
9. Susie Wolff (b.1982), racing driver

Answer: Switzerland

Born Suzanne Stoddart in Oban, Scotland, Susie is the daughter of a former professional motorcycle racer. She began her racing career, as many do, by going karting in her early teens and progressed through Formula Renault and Formula Three, before switching from open wheels to touring cars and the DTM (German Touring Car) series in 2006.

She married Toto Wolff in 2011, and he became Team Principal of the Mercedes Formula 1 team shortly thereafter. They maintain a home in Ermatingen, Switzerland.
10. Margaret Ferrier (b.1960), politician

Answer: Spain

Margaret Ferrier, who was born in Glasgow, did come home, after only two years living in Mallorca, Spain with her family when she was a girl. She has served as a Member of Parliament for Rutherglen and Hamilton West, as a member of the Scottish Nationalist Party (SNP).
