Since the British and Dominion governments opposed this marriage, he abdicated in December 1936, having been king for less than a year. Edward VIII, who became Duke of Windsor when he abdicated, and Wallis spent a good part of their married life in the Bahamas and in France.

They stayed together for 35 years until his death in 1972.
