3. The people of Russia had an unusual nickname for the Tsar. Do you know what it was?

Answer: Little Father

5. Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte was a general of Napoleon's army. Which country invited him to become their future king?

Answer: Sweden

King Charles VIII of Sweden was an elderly man in ill health and had no children. Bernadotte was elected to be his successor partly because of his links with Napoleon which were thought to be advantageous to Sweden and partly because he had shown kindness to Swedish prisoners of war.

6. How many children did Tsar Nicholas II and his wife Alexandra have?

Answer: 5

They had five children including four daughters Olga, Tatiana, Marie, and Anastasia, and one son Alexei who was the youngest. Alexei suffered from haemophilia and Rasputin seemed to be able to help him, which was how he became accepted as part of the royal household but was very unpopular with the people.

8. Richard III of England was a hunchback.

Answer: False

Richard III's remains were found in 2013 underneath a Leicester car park. They had been there since he was killed in the Battle of Bosworth against Henry VII in 1485. The bones were examined by scientists and showed clearly that he was not a hunchback, but suffered from scoliosis in his spine which would hardly have been noticeable, and would not have affected his life or his performance in battle.

His bones were interred in Leicester Cathedral in 2015.
9. Who was the emperor of Japan during the Second World War?

Answer: Hirohito

Hirohito was the emperor during the Second World War and ruled as an oligarch. However the decision making processes were shared, but arbitrated by the emperor. During the war the military reduced his power until he was just a figurehead, and as he was very popular this made it easy for them to do as they wished in his name.
10. Which king of England lost the crown jewels in The Wash?

Answer: King John

In 1215 Louis VIII of France was in possession of most of England's land. King John fled to King's Lynn in Norfolk but became ill and decided to return to Newark Castle. To get there it was necessary to cross The Wash, a rectangular bay and estuary where Norfolk meets Lincolnshire.

The king himself went by the safer route, but most of his soldiers and carts took the shorter route across the marshes, which was only safe at low tide. Unfortunately the horse drawn carts were too slow and the tide came in.

Many of the carts were lost including the one carrying the royal treasure. It has never been recovered.
