Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which well known actor had an early role as the Australian cop known as Mad Max?

Answer: Mel Gibson

Mel moved to Australia from the United States with his family at an early age. He began his career there before finding international fame in films such as the "Lethal Weapon" series with Danny Glover, "The Patriot", his American War of Independence drama and one of the late Heath Ledger's early appearances and, of course, "Braveheart", his stirring, if slightly historically inaccurate, story of Scottish hero William Wallace. Harrison Ford starred in "Star Wars" and will most likely be best remembered for his portrayal of Indiana Jones. George Clooney successfully made the transition from the small screen, where he starred in the long running hospital drama "ER", to movie stardom, while Tom Selleck found the move more daunting when he tried his hand at film after the very successful television series " Magnum P.I."
2. Max Faulkner was the (British) Open golf champion in 1951. Which of the following golfers is his son-in-law?

Answer: Brian Barnes

Max Faulkner won his title at Royal Portrush in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. This was the only time that the championship has not been played in mainland Britain. Messrs. Barnes, Jacklin, O'Connor and Torrance all played for Great Britain and Europe in Ryder Cup matches. Both Jacklin and Torrance went on to become winning captains while Brian Barnes has the distinction of defeating the great Jack Nicklaus twice in the same day in Ryder Cup single matches.
3. Entertainer Max Boyce is a passionate follower of his national Rugby Union team. Which country does he support?

Answer: Wales

A former coal miner, Max Boyce gained huge popularity as a singer/comedian, basing much of his act in his Welsh roots and drawing on his experiences of the mines and his passion for rugby. He was a very proud man when some of his songs were adopted by his fellow rugby fans and sung at Cardiff Arms Park, the home of Welsh rugby.
4. In 1918 the Nobel Prize for Physics was awarded to Max Planck. In which country was he born?

Answer: Germany

German physicist Max Planck is widely regarded as one of the most important practitioners in his field. He spent many years working as a professor at the University of Berlin and, for a time was employed at Columbia University in New York. Although active in many areas, he will be best remembered for his work with regard to quantum theory. Two of his sons met unfortunate ends, Karl, the eldest, being killed in the First World War and Erwin being hanged for his part in the assassination attempt on Adolf Hitler in 1944.
5. One of U.K. singer/comedian Max Bygraves' hit records stated that we all had a particular requirement. What were those "must have" appendages?

Answer: Hands

"You Need Hands" was flying high in the charts of 1958, issued at the same time as another of his famous songs "Tulips From Amsterdam." Max Bygraves was a very successful entertainer, his act being a blend of song and jokes. He made numerous television appearances and was the host of U.K. television game show "Family Fortunes." At one time, he supported the great Judy Garland in New York.
6. There have been two World Heavyweight Boxing Champions called Max. One was Max Schmeling. Who was the other?

Answer: Max Baer

Baer defeated the German boxer Schmeling in a title bout in 1933. He wore the Star of David on his trunks, there being obvious implications, given the nationality of his protagonist. Two years later, at the peak of his powers, he woefully underestimated his opponent and lost his title to James Braddock.

He was always the showman and had a fairly successful career in the movies, working with, amongst others, Abbott and Costello and Humphrey Bogart.
7. Max Beerbohm was well known in which field of the Arts?

Answer: Literature

Max Beerbohm, a contempory of Oscar Wilde and George Bernard Shaw, was a prolific British writer, caricaturist and critic in the first half of the 20th century. Though not as well known as some others of his era, he remains a significant literary figure of his generation.
8. Well known gravelly voiced character actor Lionel Stander played the part of butler/cook/chauffeur Max in which well known television series?

Answer: Hart To Hart

The husband and wife amateur detective team of Jonathan and Jennifer Hart were played by Robert Wagner and Stephanie Powers. "McMillan and Wife" featured Rock Hudson as a policeman and Susan St. James as, yes you've guessed it - his wife. "Magnum P.I.", set in Hawaii, starred Tom Selleck, while well known English actor Edward Woodward took the title role in "The Equalizer," the story of a freelance vigilante on the streets of New York City.
9. Swedish actor Max von Sydow played the part of Jesus in which film?

Answer: The Greatest Story Ever Told

Unfortunately, the thing probably most remembered from "The Greatest Story Ever Told" is John Wayne's American accent in the part of the centurion. Various actors have portrayed Jesus on film, among them Jeffrey Hunter in "King of Kings." Ted Neely had the title role in "Jesus Christ Superstar," while Enrique Irazoqui was the Christ in "The Gospel According To St. Matthew."
10. If you are lucky enough to be named Max which of the following words will hopefully, best describe you?

Answer: Great

I've always liked the name Max. I'm more than happy with it as a name in its own right. However it's a diminutive of various names, the most obvious being the latin Maximilian-greatest and the Scottish Maxwell which translates to Mac's well or spring. Either way it's fine by me.
