Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Known for photojournalism and war photography

Answer: Don McCullin

Born in London in 1935, McCullin first became interested in photography while doing National Service (a compulsory two year period in the forces) in the RAF in the 1950s. His focus was on making a photographic history of disasters, and he covered the war in Biafra (Nigeria) in the 1960s, the Vietnam War and conflicts in Cambodia and El Salvador, amongst many others.
2. Victorian photographer; early attempts to create moving pictures

Answer: William Friese-Greene

Originally just Wiliam Greene, this photographic pioneer came from Bristol. He was a pioneer in another way, too, adding his wife's name to his when they married - an unusual step in the nineteenth century. Friese-Greene set up photographic studios in various places in the West Country, including Bath and Plymouth. Following his move to London in 1885, he devoted his time to trying to create moving pictures but had largely sunk into anonymity by the time of his death in 1921.
3. Royal connections; photographed Duke and Duchess of Windsor for American Vogue

Answer: Patrick Lichfield

Patrick Anson, Earl of Lichfield, was directly related to Queen Elizabeth II as his mother was a first cousin to the Queen on her mother's side. As heir to the title, Lichfield was expected to devote his time to the family estate, but photography proved a bigger lure.

His connections gave him access to the higher echelons of British 'society', and he made his early living by selling photos of debutante balls. In 1967, Lichfield was recruited by American Vogue, and moved to New York. His Royal connections still helped his career - he was the official photographer for the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer.
4. Fashion photographer of 1960s; shares name with actor

Answer: Terence Donovan

East End born, Donovan was one of three men of a similar age and background who became celebrity photographers in 1960s London. Known as the 'terrible trio' in the press, Donovan, with David Bailey and Brian Duffy became as well known as the trendy people they photographed. Donovan worked for 'Harper's Bazaar' and other fashion magazines and also directed many television adverts. He was also the force behind music videos for songs by Robert Palmer.

The other Terence Donovan was also born in the UK, but made his name as an actor in Australia. Jason Donovan is his son.
5. Pop art; photocollages; printmaking

Answer: David Hockney

Although he may be better known for his paintings, Hockney used his skills as a photographer to create artworks, both directly and indirectly. His painting 'Peter Getting out of Nick's Pool', from 1966, looks almost like a photograph. During the 1980s, Hockney concentrated more on photography than on painting, particularly in the creation of collages.
6. 'Dazed & Confused'; fashion photography; uses single name professionally

Answer: John Rankin Waddell

The most recent of the photographers covered in this quiz, Rankin, as he is known professionally, came to prominence in the 1990s initially. He was the co-founder, with Jefferson Hack - now a media mogul - of the magazine 'Dazed & Confused' in the early 1990s.

The magazine later dropped the second part of its name to become 'Dazed'. Rankin is known for his photographs of models, such as Heidi Klum, celebrities, including Madonna and that much photographed woman, Queen Elizabeth II.
7. Fashion & portrait photographer; costume designer for stage and film

Answer: Cecil Beaton

Beaton was something of a pioneer in being a 'celebrity' and photographer. He was born in 1904, into a wealthy family, and his first photography teacher was the family's nanny. Photography remained a part time hobby during Beaton's early working life, but he decided to set up his own studio and make his living from his hobby. Beaton's work covered fashion, portraits and some war photography during World War II - a recommendation from the then queen helped. Beaton worked in America, and designed the costumes for both the stage and film versions of 'My Fair Lady'.
8. His 'Pencil of Nature' claimed to be the first book with photographic illustrations

Answer: William Henry Fox Talbot

Talbot was born in 1800 and had wide ranging interests, including calculus, chemistry and ancient history, as well as being a pioneer in various forms of creating photographic images. By 1841, he had created the calotype process, using paper covered with silver iodide. Images created by this method were used to illustrate the book mentioned in the question, which was published in the 1840s.
9. 1960s fashion photographer; inspired the film 'Blowup'

Answer: David Bailey

The second 'East End boy' in the quiz, Bailey worked for British version of 'Vogue' magazine from 1960 onwards. He became well known as one of the leaders of the 'Swinging Sixties'. 'Blowup', the 1966 film directed by Michelangelo Antonioni, adapted parts of his life for the lead character, portrayed by David Hemmings. Bailey photographed pretty much every famous person of the era, from The Beatles and Jean Shrimpton, to Ronnie and Reggie Kray, gansters of some notoriety at the time.
10. Fashion photography; portraits; designer; different names during lifetime

Answer: Antony Armstrong-Jones

Armstrong-Jones made his name in the late 1950s as a photographer, although he became more widely known to the general public when he married Princess Margaret, sister of Queen Elizabeth II, in 1960. He was created Earl of Snowdon on his marriage, continuing his photographic career as Lord Snowdon.

The marriage ended in 1978, but Snowdon remained close to the Royal family. Among his works are photographic portraits of many well known people, including actors from Marlene Dietrich to Rupert Everett, one time Prime Minister Harold MacMillan and Diana, Princess of Wales.
