Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of the world's first test tube baby?

Answer: Louise Brown

Louise was born on 25th July 1978 in Oldham, Greater Manchester. The IVF procedure was undertaken in November 1977 by Patrick Steptoe and Robert Edwards. Louise's own son was conceived, by natural means, in December 2006.
2. Jane Couch was the first woman granted a licence to do what, professionally?

Answer: Box

Jane was born in Fleetwood, England, in August 1968. At the age of 26 she saw a documentary on womens boxing in the US. She decided that that was what she wanted to do. It wasn't until 1998, however, that she was allowed to box professionally in the UK after winning a sex discrimination case against the British Boxing Board of Control.
3. Dr Shinobu Ishihara designed a test for what?

Answer: Colour blindness

Dr Ishihara developed the test in 1917 whilst he was a Professor at the University of Tokyo. It specifically tested for red/blue colour blindness. It consists of a series of numbers printed on cards against a background of different sized dots of varying colours.
4. Upon reaching which place, is a certain person quoted as saying, or writing, "Great God, this is an awful place".

Answer: South Pole

The quote is credited to Robert Falcon Scott upon finally reaching the South Pole. It was found, in 1912, written in his diary when a search party found the final resting place of Scott and the last two members of his ill fated expedition.
5. Gro Harlem Brundtland was which country's first female prime minister?

Answer: Norway

Born in Oslo in 1939, she qualified as a medical doctor at the University of Oslo in 1963. Between 1981 and 1996 she served three terms as prime minister. From 1998 until 2003 Brundtland was Director-General of the World Health Organization.
6. The United States has had several female astronauts. Can you recall the name of the first one to walk in space?

Answer: Kathryn Sullivan

Sullivan joined NASA in 1978 and undertook three missions. It was in 1984, whilst on her first flight, that she became the first woman to walk in space.
The other three women also produced space 'firsts'. Sally Ride was NASA's first female astronaut, Eileen Collins was the first female shuttle commander and Mae Jemison the first female African American in space.
7. Which nation produced the first Caribbean bobsleigh team to enter the Winter Olympics?

Answer: Jamaica

The team appeared at the Calgary games of 1988. Despite finishing in last place the team became firm favourites with both the crowds and press. At Lillehammer in 1994 Jamaica entered a four man team which achieved fourteenth place, ahead of both American teams. In 1993 Disney produced a film about their efforts called Cool Runnings.
8. Who initiated the very first postal service in England?

Answer: Henry VIII

In 1516 Henry VIII appointed Sir Brian Tuke to be Master of the Posts. His duty was to maintain a regular service from London on all of the major routes. The Postmasters were usually innkeepers who supplied the Royal couriers with horses.
9. The first incandescent light bulb was invented by Thomas Edison.

Answer: False

The first working light bulb was patented in the UK, in 1878, by Joseph Swan. This was about a year before Edison was awarded the American patent. Swan was not really interested in the financial gains to be made from his invention and allowed Edison to keep the US rights.
10. We are all familiar with the Battle Tank that is used by armies the World over. But who is the man that is credited with the initial 'invention'?

Answer: Ernest Swinton

Swinton was born in 1864 in Bangalore, India. He was appointed by Kitchener as the British Army's first official journalist to the Western Front. It was during the early months of World War I that Swinton wrote that an armoured, tracked vehicle would be able to counteract the machine guns of the enemy trenches.

It was from these early observations that the tank evolved. There is a story that it is called a tank because to cover the design and building a story was released that they were building water tanks.
