Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Chang and Eng Bunker were the original Siamese twins. They were discovered in Thailand (formerly Siam) by the Scottish merchant Robert Hunter in 1824.  Hunter began exhibiting them throughout the world.  What country refused to allow Chang and Eng entry because that country subscribed to the then popular doctrine of "maternal impressions," a doctrine which held that if a pregnant woman saw an unpleasant sight or was frightened in some way, that such an event might leave its marks on the unborn child?

Answer: France

Although France was closed to them,  the rest of Europe welcomed the Siamese twins. Chang and Eng married sisters in a double wedding, and between the two of them, they fathered a total of 22 children. Chang and Eng kept separate homes, and split their time evenly between the two residences.
2. Robert Pershing Wadlow was the tallest man who ever lived.  Extensive medical records exist documenting his abnormal growth.  By the time Wadlow was twenty-two, he was just shy of nine feet tall. How tall was Wadlow on his tenth birthday?

Answer: Six feet five inches

Robert Wadlow was measured at six feet five inches on his tenth birthday.  Robert was born in Alton, IL in 1918. Wadlow died at age twenty-two from blood poisoning, brought on by an infected blister caused by a poorly-fitting leg brace. At the time of his death, Wadlow measured an incredible 8 feet 11.1 inches, and wore a size 37AAA shoe.
3. My name is Carl Unthan.  I was almost smothered by my midwife when I was born in 1848 without any arms. This did not stop me from being very successful. For what achievement am I noted?

Answer: I was an accomplished violinist.  I performed in Vienna with Johann Strauss.

Carl Unthan was known as "The Armless Fiddler." Carl developed such dexterity of his feet and legs that he was able to use them as replacements for his missing upper limbs. Authorities once attempted to arrest Carl for fraud at a public concert, only to discover that it was really him who was creating the wonderful music.  Christopher Sholes invented the typewriter in 1867.
4. Lucia Zarate is believed to be the smallest woman who ever lived.  At maturity she was under twenty inches tall and weighed only five pounds.  Her diminutive size was a factor in her untimely and tragic death in 1890 at the young age of 26.  How did she die?

Answer: She froze to death when the train she was riding in stalled during a snowstorm.

Lucia Zarate was born in Mexico in 1864. She earned large sums of money (in excess of $20 an hour) exhibiting herself as the "Puppet Woman". Unfortunately, her adult stature of 1'8" put her at increased risks for many perils. Tragically, her diminutive size, sparse subcutaneous fat and small muscle mass provided her little protection from the elements, and she died of exposure in 1890 when her circus train stalled during a Rocky Mountains snowstorm.
5. Prince Randian exhibited himself for many years on Coney Island as the "Caterpillar Man".  He had no arms, forearms, legs or thighs. He spoke four languages and maintained a very optimistic perspective on life. As long as he had his mind, he was determined to make the best of his disabilities. Prince Randian appeared in Tod Browning's controversial 1932 movie, "Freaks" where he had one speaking line. What line was that?

Answer: "What can you do with your eyebrows?"

Prince Randian did not need anyone to light his cigarettes for him. In fact, he could roll and light his own cigarettes using just his mouth, as he demonstrated in the movie. Prince Randian did not feel that God had been unfair to him, and he was not resentful of his lot in life. Prince Randian's limbless condition is known as phocomelia. Thalidomide, a drug which was prescribed to pregnant woman in the late 1950s to prevent morning sickness, caused many cases of phocomelia.
6. General Tom Thumb, a talented midget, was one of the sensations of the 19th century, and brought great wealth to P. T. Barnum. What dignitary had a reception for him in his honor while he was on his honeymoon with his diminutive wife Lavinia Warren?

Answer: Abraham Lincoln

While General Tom Thumb had audiences with all four of these distinguished people, it was Abraham Lincoln who honored him with a White House reception on his honeymoon. General Tom Thumb's real name was Charles Stratton. Charles Stratton was born in Bridgeport, CT in 1838. He is reported to have stood 2'1"and to have weighed just 25 pounds at the age of 25.
7. What medical condition was not exhibited in circus "sideshows" of the 19th century?

Answer: Crohn's Disease

Osteogenesis imperfecta is a disease that causes profound deformities as bones break in hundreds of places. It was a commonly exhibited abnormality in circus sideshows of the 19th century. Ehler Danlos Syndrome is a connective tissue disorder that in its more extreme forms causes marked hyperextensibility of joints. People with certain forms of this condition can contort their body into extreme anatomical positions and dysarticulate their joints at will (The Rubber Man). Pygopagus is a viable form of conjoined twins where the twins are joined at the buttocks. Regional enteritis is another name for Crohn's disease.

Crohn's disease is an inflammatory bowel disease without any startling external manifestations.
8. Grady Stiles was born with a condition known as ectrodactyly which resulted in claw-like hands and shortened, fin-like, lower extremities that led to his sideshow designation as the "Lobster Boy". He was unable to walk, but could scoot quickly along the floor with his muscular body. He gained national publicity in the USA in the 1980s when he was charged with killing his daughter's boyfriend. What is true about this "stranger than fiction" case?

Answer: All of these statements are true.

Fred Rosen wrote a biography of Grady Stiles's life called, "Lobster Boy", and the X-Files based one of their episodes on this case.
9. During my lifetime my name was literally synonymous with ugliness throughout the Western World.  My promotors billed me as the "Ugliest Woman in the World" and the famous civil war photographer Matthew Brady did a photo study of me.  My body was grossly deformed and covered with hair, and I was reported to have had two rows of teeth in each jaw.  In 1860, at the age of 28, I gave birth to a severely deformed and hairy child who lived just two days.  Deeply grieving, I died shortly thereafter.  My exhibitor, Mr Lent, saw the opportunity to exploit me even after my death, and he had my body and that of my child embalmed by Professor Sokoloff, a world expert at the time in mummification.  For over a century, my body and that of my son were exhibited throughout the world.  My son and I have yet to receive a proper burial.  Who am I?

Answer: Julia Pastrana

The last known exhibition of Julia and her child was in Norway in the late 1970s. Her body and that of her son were subsequently stolen and recovered by Norwegian authorites at a dump site in 1990. The remains of both Julia and her child are now in the possession of The Oslo Forensic Institute. Grace Gilbert and Madame Clofullia were both famous bearded women exhibited by P.T. Barnum.
10. Reba and Lori Shappell are craniopagus Siamese twins who were born in the United States in 1961. They are joined at the head, and face opposite directions from one another. They share a left eye as well as 30% of their brain. Reba is paralyzed by spina bifida and uses a specialized wheeled stool to get around. Which of the following statements about Reba and Lori is false?

Answer: Reba and Lori made history when they became the first Siamese twins to tandem skydive.

Skydiving would likely be a lethal undertaking for Reba and Lori. Reba and Lori live in Pennsylvania, and are among the oldest living craniopagus conjoined twins in the world. Reba and Lori would only consider surgical separation if one or the other were to die. Reba sang the national anthem at the Cabbie vs Stuttering John fight in 2002. Reba and Lori have made multiple TV appearances and were featured in the 1998 A&E documentary. "Face to Face: The Shappell Sisters". Reba was originally named Dori by her mother, but changed her name to Reba in honor of her music idol, Reba McIntyre.

The girls consulted in the making of "Stuck on You," the 2003 movie starring Matt Damon and Greg Kinnear as conjoined twins. Reba, the LA Music Award winner, wrote one of the songs used in the movie.

The girls have also signed a contract to be on an upcoming episode of the popular television show, "Nip n'Tuck."
