Answer: D. Mafalda

All of the others were his daughters. D.Teresa was also the name of his mother whom D.Afonso had to battle in order to establish the Kingdom of Portugal.
2. All Portuguese Kings had a nickname (apart from their name, they always had a cognomen). What was the nickname of D. Afonso II?

Answer: The Fat

He was known by this cognomen because... well, because he was fat!
"The Conqueror" was the cognomen of D. Afonso Henriques. "The Avenger" was the cognomen of D. Pedro I and "The Handsome" was the cognomen of D. Fernando.

The Treaty of Tordesillas divided the World in two parts: one belonging to Portugal and the other to Spain.
It is said that D. João II already knew of the existence of Brazil, prior to its discovery in 1500. One of the proofs given of this, is that when signing the Treaty of Tordesillas, D. João II pressured the King of Spain to change the coordinates of the dividing line so that Brazil would be on "Portugal's side of the world".

D. Sebastião left for Africa in June of 1578 and arrived in Alcácer Quibir on August 3rd where he expected to defeat the Moors. His army was composed of adventurers and miserables. When they reached Alcácer Quibir, the entire army was exhausted from the walk and the heat. Led by an unfit king, they were easily destroyed.

During his reign, several people were persecuted including Jews, Jesuits and several members of royalty. It was during his reign that a great earthquake destroyed part of the city of Lisbon in 1755.
