Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. King Carl XVI Gustaf ascended to the Swedish throne in 1973 succeeding King Gustaf VI Adolf. What relationship was the new king to the old one?

Answer: Grandson

Carl XVI Gustaf ascended to the throne when his grandfather, Gustaf VI Adolf, died at the age of 91. Carl's father, Prince Gustaf Adolf, died in a plane crash in 1947 before taking the throne. Soon after taking the throne, the new king's powers were severely limited by the 1974 Constitution which removed much of the Swedish monarch's power. Had it not been for the popularity of Gustaf VI Adolf, the Swedish monarchy might have been completely abolished.
2. Carl XVI's Gustaf's consort is Queen Silvia. The couple met at which world event in 1972?

Answer: Summer Olympic Games

Silvia Sommerlath was born in Heidelberg to a German father and a Brazilian mother. She and her family traveled abroad frequently and Silvia learned many languages this way. During the 1972 Summer Games in Munich, Silvia worked as a hostess trainer and it was in that position where she met the future king. Carl later stated that he fell for Silvia instantly. ABBA's hit song "Dancing Queen" was first performed in honor of Silvia on the day before her wedding.
3. The king and queen's oldest child is Victoria who is the founder of the Crown Princess Victor's Fund, a charity associated with what?

Answer: Activities for children and the disabled

Victoria founded the fund in 1997 and its goal is to create and maintain physical activities for children and disabled adults who might not have access to such things. The aim is to help these people lead active lifestyles and provide them with some place to go. In addition, Victoria is active on the boards of many sporting events, especially those involving the disabled.

Victoria was born on July 14, 1977. As the oldest-born child of King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia, she is the next in line to the Swedish Throne. Her full name is Victoria Ingrid Alice Desiree.
4. Victoria married Daniel Westling in 2010. Prior to becoming a member of the Swedish Royal Family, Daniel owned what kind of businesses?

Answer: Gyms

Daniel Westling (born Olof Daniel Westling) owned several gyms in Stockholm called Balance Gyms. He relinquished controls of his gyms and his other companies prior to marrying Victoria and becoming Prince Daniel. Prior to his marriage, Daniel hated the publicity and press speculation. Princess Victoria often spoke on his behalf and fought back against press criticism of their relationship.

Victoria and Daniel's oldest child is Princess Estelle, who is next in line to the throne after her mother. The couple also have a son, Prince Oscar.
5. King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia's only son is Prince Carl Philip. What happened to the prince when he was eight months old?

Answer: He was knocked down one place in the line of succession

When he was born in 1979, Carl Philip was the Heir Apparent to the throne. However, a 1980 law changed the line of succession. Previously, sons were placed ahead of daughters in the line of succession regardless of age. The new law fixed that so only the birth order of children mattered. Thus, Carl Philip's older sister Victoria was placed ahead of him when the order was scrambled. The move was controversial as King Carl XVI Gustaf thought it was unfair his son had been knocked out of the Heir Apparent position instead of starting the new line with future generations.

Prior to his marriage, Carl Philip was considered one of Europe's most handsome and eligible bachelors, along with Prince Harry of England.
6. Carl Philip married Sofia Hellqvist in 2015. Much like her brother-in-law Daniel, Princess Sofia faced tough criticism from the press because of her past working as a what?

Answer: Supermodel

Sofia Hellqvist, prior to her marriage to Carl Philip, was a supermodel who frequently posed in seductive and sexy photoshoots. During one of these shoots, Sofia wore very little clothing and covered her modesty with a boa constrictor. She also appeared on several reality television series that also provided fodder for the press. Carl Philip aggressively fought back against the press criticism that Sofia was not welcomed into the Royal Family.

He also pleaded with the press not to bully Sofia and compared press treatment of her to his own bullying in school for being dyslexic.
7. The King and Queen's youngest child is Princess Madeleine. Like Princess Anne of England, Madeleine is an accomplished athlete in which sport?

Answer: Equitation

Princess Madeleine is known for her love of horses and riding. She has competed in various equestrian events under the name Anna Svensson and is active in various riding charities to support children who cannot afford to compete in the expensive activity. Even more so than her siblings, Madeleine frequently travels around the world to participate in various charitable events.
8. Which of the following is true regarding Princess Madeleine's husband Christopher?

Answer: He is not a prince

Christopher O'Neill is a British-American financier who was born in London. Members of the Swedish Royal Family must have Swedish citizenship but Christopher declined to become a Swedish citizen. As a result, he is not a prince and is referred to as Herr Christopher.

He does not partake in any traditional royal duties and is more or less considered a private citizen. Before marrying Madeleine, Christopher relinquished control of several of his holdings but maintains others that do not conflict with Swedish law.
9. King Carl XVI Gustaf has four sisters. Are they all older than him or younger than him?

Answer: Older

King Carl XVI Gustaf is the youngest child and only son of his parents, Prince Gustaf Adolf and Princess Sibylla. He has four older sisters, Princess Margaretha (commonly called Mrs. Ambler), Princess Birgitta, Princess Desiree and Princess Christina (Mrs. Magnuson). Margaretha and Christina married nonroyals and lost their royal duties but maintained the title of princess.
10. After Carl XVI Gustaf became king in 1973 and before he had a son in 1979, who was his heir or heiress presumptive?

Answer: His uncle, Prince Bertil

Women were, at the time of Carl's sisters' births, not allowed to be queen and their descendants were not to be included in the line of succession. This changed afterward but the line of succession was not rectified and Carl's sisters were still not included.

The next in line after Carl took the throne was his uncle, Prince Bertil, Carl's father's younger brother. Bertil remained next in line until Carl Philip was born in 1979. When the rules regarding succession were changed in 1980, Bertil became third in line and then eventually fourth after Madeleine was born.
