Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Alexander Ramsay (February 27th, 1919)

Answer: Princess Patricia

Princess Patricia of Connaught, a granddaughter of Queen Victoria, married a naval officer named Alexander Ramsay in February 1919, although she had been proposed as a potential bride for both the King of Spain and Tsar Nicholas II of Russia's younger brother.

While her husband left Westminster Abbey as a member of the Royal Family, Patricia left the building as plain Lady Patricia Ramsay as she had given up the title of princess on her marriage. However, this decision didn't stop her taking part in the pomp and circumstance of royal life - she continued to attend state occasions such as coronations and remained in the line of succession to the throne (although admittedly a long way down it).
2. Viscount Lascelles (February 28th, 1922)

Answer: Princess Mary

Viscount Lascelles, who later went on to succeed his father as Earl of Harewood, married Princess Mary, the only daughter of King George V, at Westminster Abbey in February 1922. As the eldest daughter of the monarch, Princess Mary was granted the additional title of Princess Royal in 1932 following the death of her aunt Princess Louise (the previous holder of the honour).

The couple spent much of their married life at Harewood House, the seat of the Lascelles family and one of the grandest stately homes in England. Princess Mary was President of the British Girl Guides Association for most of her life and various centenary celebrations for that movement were held at Harewood House in 2010.
3. Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon (April 26th, 1923)

Answer: Prince Albert

When Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon married Prince Albert, Duke of York - the second son of King George V - in 1923, it was not expected that the couple would go on to become the country's king and queen. However, the abdication crisis of 1936 left Prince Albert as King George VI and his wife as Queen Elizabeth. Following her husband's death from lung cancer in 1952, Queen Elizabeth became known as the Queen Mother - a title and role that she held for just over 50 years.

Their wedding set a new tradition for the British monarchy when the bride laid her wedding bouquet on Westminster Abbey's Tomb of the Unknown Warrior in memory of her brother Fergus, who had been killed during the First World War.
4. Princess Marina of Greece and Denmark (November 29th, 1934)

Answer: Prince George

Throughout history, members of Britain's royal families were married off to other European royals in order to gain alliances, consolidate power or produce other political benefits. The fact that Princess Marina was the only foreign-born princess to marry a member of the Royal Family at Westminster Abbey during the 20th century underlines the more modern outlook on marriage adopted by its members in recent years. Princess Marina was a granddaughter of the assassinated King George I of Greece, who had originally been a Danish prince.

She was also a second cousin of her husband, Prince George, Duke of Kent - the fourth son of King George V. Sadly, their marriage was short-lived as he was killed while serving with the Royal Air Force during the Second World War.
5. Philip Mountbatten (November 20th, 1947)

Answer: Princess Elizabeth

Philip Mountbatten was actually born as Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark, but renounced his royal titles prior to his marriage to the heir to the British throne in 1947. His new surname of Mountbatten came from his mother's parents, who had adopted it themselves during the First World War after all members of the British Royal Family were required to renounce any German royal titles they held. Mountbatten was an anglicised version of 'Battenberg' - Philip's mother was Princess Alice of Battenberg prior to her own marriage. Princess Elizabeth ascended to the throne as Queen Elizabeth II just over four years after their marriage, while Philip was granted the title of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
6. Antony Armstrong-Jones (May 6th, 1960)

Answer: Princess Margaret

Princess Margaret, the younger sister of Queen Elizabeth II, married the society portrait photographer Antony Armstrong Jones at Westminster Abbey in 1960. In honour of their marriage, the Queen granted him the title of Earl of Snowdon and as a result much of his photographic work - including a major collection held in London's National Portrait Gallery - is listed under the name Lord Snowdon. Princess Margaret and Lord Snowdon had two children together before their marriage ended in divorce in July 1978.

While Princess Margaret never remarried, Lord Snowdon's second marriage to Lucy Lindsay-Hogg took place just months later in December 1978.
7. Angus Ogilvy (April 24th, 1963)

Answer: Princess Alexandra

In 1963, Princess Alexandra of Kent married The Honourable Angus Ogilvy at Westminster Abbey. The wedding took place nearly 30 years after her parents, Prince George of Kent and Princess Marina of Greece and Denmark, had married in the same ancient building.

Although Angus Ogilvy declined the monarch's offer of a peerage, he wasn't entirely unconnected from the top levels of British society as he was the second son of 12th Earl of Airlie - a title that was bestowed on the Ogilvy family for their support to King Charles I in the run up to the English Civil War and his eventual execution by the parliamentarians.
8. Mark Phillips (November 14th, 1973)

Answer: Princess Anne

Princess Anne and her husband, Mark Phillips, were both members of Great Britain's international equestrian eventing team. Prior to their marriage, Anne won the individual European Eventing Championship in 1971 and the prestigious BBC Sports Personality of the Year award, while Mark Phillips won the gold medal in the team event at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich. Anne later became the first member of the British Royal Family to compete at the Olympics when she took part in the eventing competition in Montreal in 1976.

Their daughter, Zara Phillips, followed in the footsteps of both her parents when she competed in the equestrian eventing competition at the 2012 Olympics in London. The couple divorced in 1992 and Anne married her second husband, Timothy Laurence, at Crathie Kirk near Balmoral later that year.
9. Sarah Ferguson (July 23rd, 1986)

Answer: Prince Andrew

Sarah Ferguson, better known as 'Fergie' or Sarah, Duchess of York, married Queen Elizabeth II's second son, Prince Andrew, at Westminster Abbey in 1986. The ceremony attracted an estimated 500 million television viewers from across the world in addition to a VIP guest list that included representatives of numerous foreign monarchies and the then First Lady of the USA, Nancy Reagan.

After the birth of two daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, the marriage ended in separation in 1993 and divorce in 1996. Both Andrew and Sarah continued to attract significant media attention after their divorce, often for various scandals and (in Sarah's case) financial difficulties.
10. Catherine Middleton (April 29th, 2011)

Answer: Prince William

The first royal wedding of the 21st century to be held at Westminster Abbey was that of Prince William, Duke of Cambridge - the son of Prince Charles and the late Diana, Princess of Wales - to Catherine "Kate" Middleton. The couple met in 2001 while they were both studying at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland.

Their lengthy relationship survived a brief break-up in 2007 and they announced their engagement in November 2010 before marrying five months later. Unusually for a woman marrying into the Royal Family, Catherine had no immediate connections to either royalty or the nobility - although genealogical research uncovered extremely distant connections to both King Edward III and King Edward IV.
