Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Born in 1868, the last Czar of Russia ascended the throne in 1894 after the death of his father. What year was he finally crowned Czar?

Answer: 1896

Nicholas II, the last Czar of Russia, was the eldest son of Alexander III.
2. The Czar married Alexandra Feodorovna. What European country did Alexandra have direct family ties to?

Answer: Britain

Alexandra was the grand-daughter of Queen Victoria. Pictures of her in youth show a very, very beautiful woman. This beauty was carried over to her daughters.
3. Known as a "disease among royals", what disorder did Alexandra carry that was passed on to at least one of her children?

Answer: hemophilia

The oldest of all known blood disorders, hemophilia patients lack the clotting protein that stops blood flow from cuts and scratches. Especially painful is the internal bleeding and swelling resulting from a simple bruise. Alexandra was a carrier of this disorder but did not herself show symptoms of hemophilia.

It is possible that some of her daughters were also carriers of the disorder, but this will never be known.
4. The Czar and Czarina had five beautiful children, one son and four daughters. What was the name of the eldest child?

Answer: Olga

Olga, the eldest, shared her name with Nicholas II's sister. All five of the Romanov children shared names with other contemporary and ealier Romanovs.
5. The Czar and the Czarina were part of which royal dynasty?

Answer: Romanov

The Romanov family became intermingled with the rest of the European nobility and royalty in the 1700s.
6. Of the five royal children, who was the youngest child?

Answer: Alexei

The youngest child and heir apparent to the throne, young Alexei suffered from the blood disorder hemophilia, passed from his grandmother and mother. This brought great shame to the Empress as it cast doubts upon Alexei's ability to rule one day as Czar.
7. Of the five royal children, who was the youngest daughter?

Answer: Anastasia

The life of Anastasia has most intrigued historians because of the possibility of her survival during the massacre of the royal family. The mystery thickened when the family was found and removed from the mass grave where they were buried. It was found that the bodies of the two youngest children, Anastasia and Alexei, were missing. Over the years, there have been several pretenders that claimed to be either child. Anastasia was the most commonly assumed claim because of the limitations Alexei's hemophilia presented to would-be claimants.
8. A famous Orthodox 'monk', known for his healing abilities and influence over the royal family, was assassinated in 1916. What was his name?

Answer: Rasputin

Rasputin was first called upon to calm Alexei during painful bouts with his hemophilia. He later developed a major influence over the Czar and Czarina. Because Rasputin was prone to personal scandal, many of the related royals frowned upon his influence (he was known as the "Mad Monk"). Rasputin was assassinated in a plot hatched by Prince Yussupov (Yussupov was married to the Czar's niece) and Grand Duke Romanov (the Czar's cousin).
9. As the political climate in Russia and its fortunes (or rather, misfortunes) in WWI worsened, the Czar was faced with the possibility of civil war. In order to defuse the situation, the Czar abdicated the throne in ____________.

Answer: 1917

He abdicated in March 1917 in favour of his brother, Michael, who in turn abdicated within days. The family eventually fled, ending up in Yekaterinburg, where they were assassinated.
10. Leading up to the assassination of the royal family, which of these political parties was one of the two major players in the Russian Civil War of 1918-1921?

Answer: Bolsheviks

The Bolsheviks, led by Lenin, were responsible for holding the royal family hostage and later assassinating them. After various changes in name and political theory, the Bolsheviks became the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (Bolshevist) - CPSU(B). The leading group opposing the Bolsheviks was the Whites.
11. On July 17, 1918, under the guise of taking a family portrait, the royals were assassinated in the basement of the building where they were held captive. What city were they assassinated in?

Answer: Yekaterinburg

The Romanovs were told that they were to have their picture taken as proof as their continued well-being. The family lined up against a wall with their servants and family physician where they were gunned down by a small group of soldiers.
12. Which of these methods was *not* used to assassinate the Orthodox priest and spiritual advisor of the royal family?

Answer: Stabbing

The conspirators first tricked Rasputin into coming to visit and meet the Czar's niece Irina (reputed to be a very beautiful woman). Upon arrival, an attempt was made to poison Rasputin with poisoned food and drink. When that failed to kill him, Rasputin was shot once. Running for his life as best he could, Rasputin made it outside the home where he was shot again.

The final event ending his life was the result of being dumped into the icy river where he most likely succumbed to hypothermia and drowned.
13. Several accounts of witnesses and interviewers of the firing squad that eliminated the royal family speak of the difficulty in killing the females present. This was because the women were wearing unlikely body armour encrusted with what?

Answer: Jewels

The intent was not to save their lives but to save some of their fortune and the heirlooms passed through generations. Little did they know their undergarments would extend the tragic last minutes of their lives because the bullets literally ricocheted off them. Most ended up being shot in the head.

Some of the more superstitious assassins claimed that the women were protected by the "magic of Rasputin".
14. In order to dispose of the bodies, the Bolsheviks, led by Yakov Yurovsky, tried several means of destroying the evidence. What was NOT one of them?

Answer: Chopping into small bits

According to records, two bodies were burned but not completely. Most of the bodies were disfigured with acid and then all remains were tossed down an abandoned mine shaft and blown up with hand grenades (essentially caving the mine in). Finally, after some time, the bodies were again moved to a shallow unmarked mass grave where they remained until 1991.
15. Despite this tragic true story, there was a silver lining when the bodies were rediscovered after a search of records and leads. The bodies were exhumed in _________.

Answer: 1991

After a thorough search, nine bodies were recovered, carefully examined and tested for a verifiable connection to their royal kin. It was found that of the nine bodies, four were unrelated to the Romanovs (they were the bodies of the servants and doctor of the family) and five were indeed Romanovs.

The royal bodies included that of Czar Nicholas II, Empress/Czarina Alexandra and daughters Olga and Tatiana. The fifth body is said to be either Anastasia or Marie based on the difficulty of determining the age at time of death (the two youngest daughters were close in age).

The common theory is that the fifth body is Marie. If you've done your math correctly, you are missing two bodies...reported to be Anastasia and Alexei.
