Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How was Henry I related to William the Conqueror?

Answer: Son

William II (reigned 1087-1100), the third son of William I, left no children and was succeeded by his youngest brother, who became Henry I.
2. Henry I's lawful heir is generally referred to Empress Matilda (or Maud). How did she get the title of Empress?

Answer: By marriage to Holy Roman Emperor Henry V

In 1114 Matilda (lived 1102-1167) married Emperor Henry V in Mainz Cathedral, but he died in 1125. Later that year she returned to England, to the court of her father, as a 23-year-old Dowager Empress. Three years later she married Geofrey of Anjou, acquiring the name Plantagenet.

Matilda reigned only very briefly in England (in 1141). The throne was usurped on her father's death by her cousin, Stephen of Blois.
