Alexandra was born in Germany on June 6, 1872. Until she married, her name was Alix. Her father was Grand Duke Louis IV of Hesse-Darmstadt. Hesse-Darmstadt was a small German duchy her mother was Princess Alice, a daughter of Queen Victoria of Great Britain. Note: Until 1871, Germany consisted of many independent states, principalities and kingdoms.

In 1871, the Prussian Chancellor, Bismarck, created the first united Germany, and the king of Prussia became the German Kaiser. It was, however, a federal state, an empire ("Reich") and most of the individual states and their rulers retained a considerable measure of autonomy.

Alexandra became the object of anti-German feeling during World War One because she had been born a German princess and Kaiser Wilhelm II was her cousin. Alexandra's brother, who she was very close to, was also fighting for the Germans. The Russian people believed that Alexandra sympathised with the Germans and was passing Russian secrets on to her family in Germany.

They were wrong, however. Alexandra did not support the Germans and wanted the Russians to win.
10. When did Alexandra of Russia die?

Answer: 1918

Alexandra was murdered early in the morning of July 17th, 1918 in a cellar in Ekaterinburg alongside her husband, children and several servants. She was shot in the head and died instantly.
