The UK Crown Jewels Trivia Quiz

The Crown Jewels are kept in the Jewel House in the Tower of London. They are guarded by the Yeoman Warders or 'Beefeaters' and are owned by the nation rather than the monarch as you might expect.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. There have been several attempts to steal the Crown Jewels over the years. They were actually stolen in 1303 from Westminster Abbey, but the most famous attempt was made in 1671 by whom?

Answer: Colonel Blood

Thomas Blood and his cronies overpowered the guard and crushed or sawed in half some of the items to make them easier to hide before trying to make their escape. They didn't quite make it however and were arrested. Amazingly, King Charles II pardoned him and awarded him a pension!
2. The oldest item in the Crown Jewels, dating from the 12th century, is used in the coronation of UK Sovereigns. What is it?

Answer: The Anointing Spoon

The Anointing Spoon survived the destruction of the royal regalia ordered by Oliver Cromwell in 1649-50. It is used to anoint the sovereign with holy oil.
3. The crown used in the coronation ceremony weighs a considerable 2.23 Kg. What is it called?

Answer: St. Edward's Crown

It was used to crown Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. Imagine how hard it must be to balance such a weighty crown on your head for any length of time.
4. Which of the Crown Jewels contains the flawless 530 carat "Cullinan 1" diamond (also known as the "First Star of Africa")?

Answer: The Sovereign's Sceptre with Cross

The "First Star of Africa" is the largest stone cut from the legendary "Cullinan" Diamond which was found in South Africa.
5. There are three steel coronation swords. Two represent Temporal Justice and Spiritual Justice. What does the third represent? Shakespeare talked about its quality.

Answer: Mercy

The three swords along with the Anointing Spoon survived Oliver Cromwell's destruction of the royal regalia in 1649-50.
6. Following the restoration of the monarchy in 1660, Charles II ordered a new set of regalia to replace those destroyed by Oliver Cromwell. Unluckily for him, they cost quite a large some of money. How much?

Answer: £13,000

Of course, £13,000 over 350 years ago was a huge amount. In addition to the new royal regalia, Charles II paid £18,000 for, among other things, some new gold banqueting plate which is still used today on Maunday Thursday (the day before Good Friday). In the Royal Maunday ceremony the Sovereign gives out sets of silver coins to deserving senior citizens (one man and one woman for each year of the sovereign's age).
7. The Imperial State Crown of India was created for which King to wear at the Delhi Coronation Durbar in 1911?

Answer: King George V

The Imperial State Crown of India is set with 6,000 diamonds, rubies and emeralds and has never been worn since that 1911 visit to India.
8. Which crown incorporates jewels from the old Imperial Crown, including the "Second Star of Africa" (the 2nd largest stone cut from the Cullinan Diamond), the Black Prince's Ruby, The Stuart Sapphire and St. Edward's Sapphire?

Answer: The Imperial State Crown

The 3,000+ carat "Cullinan" Diamond was presented to King Edward VII by the Government of the Transvaal (South Africa) in 1907. It was the largest uncut diamond ever found and yielded dozens of magnificent stones once it was cut.
9. The "Koh-i-Nur" diamond was presented to Queen Victoria in 1850 and is now part of what?

Answer: The Crown of Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother

The late Queen Mothers Crown was created for her in 1937 for the coronation of her husband King George VI. Koh-i-Nur means "Mountain of Light".
10. The Crown Jewels have been stored at The Tower of London since the 14th century. Where had they previously been stored?

Answer: Westminster Abbey

They were moved to the Tower of London in 1303 following a successful robbery from the Abbey.
