Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Newspaper headlines were made on August 8, 1969, when a number of people were discovered to have been brutally murdered at the address of 10050 Cielo Drive, in the hills above of Los Angeles, California. Who was NOT one of the victims to lose their life at that location?

Answer: Leno LaBianca

Leno LaBianca was murdered two days later at a different location, by the followers of Charles Manson. On August 8th, members of the Manson family invaded the home of actress Sharon Tate, and brutally murdered the actress and four of her houseguests. Also killed that night at the Cielo Drive location were Steven Parent, Abigail Folger, Voytec Frykowski, and Jay Sebring. Parent died of multiple gunshot wounds. The other victims died of multiple stab wounds. At the time of her murder, Tate was eight and a half months pregnant.

Two nights later, the Manson family struck again. This time, they invaded the home of businessman/grocery storeowner Leno LaBianca. Both Leno and his wife Rosemary were repeatedly stabbed by the group of deranged killers. Both victims died from their wounds.
2. Product spokesperson Orville Redenbacher became known to many as he pitched his brand of "Gourmet Popping Corn" in television commercials. Redenbacher died on September 19, 1995, at his home in Coronado, California. What was the cause of death for this popcorn-making icon?

Answer: Drowning

At the age of 88, Redenbacher died while in the whirlpool tub of his condominium. Redenbacher suffered a massive heart attack while alone at his home, and drowned.
3. Many Hollywood entertainers lived to reach a ripe old age. Which of the performers listed had the longest life?

4. History tells us that Leon Czolgosz assassinated William McKinley, the 25th president of the United States. What was the medical opinion of the two bullet wounds received by McKinley?

Answer: Neither bullet wound was considered to be life threatening.

Leon Frank Czolgosz shot McKinley twice at point blank range on September 6, 1901, as he stood in a reception line at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York. The first bullet deflected off a button and did not seriously injure the President. The second bullet went through McKinley's stomach, colon, and kidney, and lodged in the muscle in his back.

Doctors were unable to locate the second bullet. It was felt that the search for the bullet, using the available 19th century medical technology and techniques might cause more harm than good. McKinley appeared to be recovering, so the doctors decided to leave the bullet where it was. McKinley's doctors believed he would recover, and the President convalesced for more than a week. Eight days after being shot, McKinley died from gangrene, which had surrounded his wound, on September 14, 1901.

Czolgosz was later found guilty of murder, and was executed by means of electrocution, on October 29, 1901.
5. Which of the following figures was NOT killed in an automobile traffic accident?

Diana Spencer, the Princess of Wales, was killed on August 31, 1997, after a high-speed car accident in Paris, France.

Actress and 1950's blonde bombshell Jayne Mansfield, was killed on June 29, 1967, at the age of 34, when the car in which she was riding (reportedly traveling a 80 m.p.h.) crashed into the back of a tractor. The car collided with tractor-trailer that had slowed on the road because of a truck spraying mosquito fogger. Mansfield and two other adults, all riding in the front seat of the vehicle were killed instantly. Three of Mansfield's five children were riding in the back seat of the car, and survived the accident with only minor injuries.

Rumors circulated at the time of the accident, that Jayne Mansfield had been decapitated, have been proved untrue. Mansfield did suffer severe head trauma in the accident. The rumors of decapitation may have been the result of police photographs of the accident scene, which showed what appeared to be a blonde hair tangled in the car's smashed windshield, it is believed that this was either a wig Mansfield was wearing at the time of the collision, or was her actual hair and scalp.

Dean was behind the wheel of his Porsche 550 Spyder sports car, enroute to a sports car rally race in Salinas, California. While driving westbound on US Highway 466 (later renamed California State Route 46), a driver traveling eastbound attempted to turn onto a cross road (California state route 41) and without seeing him, turned into the path of Dean's vehicle, causing a near head-on collision. Dean was taken to the Paso Robles War Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced to be "dead on arrival".

Death came as a result of internal bleeding caused by an aortic aneurysm.
An unusual aspect of Einstein's death came when Princeton Hospital pathologist, Dr. Thomas Soltz Harvey, who performed the autopsy on Einstein, removed and retained the brain of Einstein, without the knowledge or consent of Einstein's family. It was Harvey's hope that neuroscience of the future would be able to discover what made Einstein so intelligent.
10. On January 28, 1986, a space disaster took the lives of seven persons, including Dick Scobee, Judith Reznik, Ronald McNair, Ellison Onazuka, Michael J. Smith, Christa McAuliffe, and Gregory Jarvis. Over which state did this air disaster occur?

Answer: Florida

According to Wikipedia: "The space shuttle Challenger, on mission STS-51-L, disintegrated 73 seconds into its flight, following launch from Kennedy Space Center, over the state of Florida. It was later determined that an "O-Ring Seal' in the right solid rocket booster failed. This seal failure caused a flame leak from the solid rocket booster, which impinged upon the adjacent external fuel tank. Within seconds, the flames caused structural failure of the external tank, and aerodynamic forces promptly broke up the orbiter. The shuttle was destroyed and all seven crew members were killed. The crew compartment, and many other vehicle fragments were eventually recovered from the ocean floor after a lengthy search and rescue."
