Thomas Jonathon "Stonewall" Jackson (1824-1863) was a Confederate General during the American Civil War. He was a graduate of West Point and began a career in the United States Army and fought in the Mexican-American War (1846-1848). Coming from Virginia he turned his allegiance to the south when the American Civil War broke out in 1861.
He gained his nickname of "stonewall" during the First Battle of Bull Run as he stood there refusing to retreat and standing like a stone wall. He was mistakenly wounded by his own forces and died eight days later after complications from pneumonia on May 10, 1863.
