Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When Marcus Antonius (Mark Antony) received the news that Cleopatra was dead, he stabbed himself. Why was this an overreaction?

Answer: She wasn't dead

Antony and Cleopatra had a complicated relationship. After retreating from battle, Cleopatra was afraid Antony would kill her in his rage. So, she sent word to him that she was already dead in hopes that he would remember how much he loved her. In fact, he loved her so much that he fell on his own sword when he got the tragic news. He died in her arms.
2. Britney Spears' first marriage lasted less than one day.

Answer: False

Her marriage to her childhood friend Jason Alexander lasted for an entire 55 hours. She went on to get married again later that same year to another winner, Kevin Federline.
3. The marriage between Dr. Hawley Harvey Crippen and Cora Henrietta Crippen ended badly. What was the tragic event which parted them?

Answer: He killed her

Scotland Yard inspectors found Cora's remains... minus the head and limbs... buried under the Crippens' house. Doctor Crippen and his lover were caught fleeing the country in disguise.
4. Grigori Rasputin was a 'healer' valued by the family of Czar Nicholas II of Russia. How did Rasputin's assassins say goodbye to him?

Answer: Poisoned, bludgeoned, shot, and drowned him

One of the most famous things about Rasputin is his assassination. Some Russian nobles, concerned with Rasputin's growing influence, invited the Mad Monk to dinner. There, they poisoned him, beat him with an iron, shot him, and finally threw him in the river. Supposedly, Rasputin drowned.
5. Bathsheba, mother of the wise King Solomon, was married to King David (the slayer of Goliath). What happened to Uriah, her first husband?

Answer: David had him killed

Uriah was a Hittite soldier in David's army. When David fell in love with (and impregnated) Uriah's wife, the king sent the Hittite warrior to his death. Once Bathsheba became a widow, David married her. God was displeased with such nasty behavior, and punished David by taking away his wives, killing his son, and cursing him to a life of warfare.
6. The Roman general Caius Marcius Coriolanus, according to Shakespeare, reacted to the common people of Rome choosing not to elect him to the Consulship in an angry fashion. What did he do?

Answer: Denounced common people's role in government

General Coriolanus hated the idea of the common man (Plebians) having a voice in government, and when they didn't vote him into office he compares it to crows pecking eagles. Further enraged by the speech, the Plebians exile Coriolanus. Further enraged by the exile, Coriolanus joins Rome's enemies. And so on.
7. Who said, "I destroy my enemy when I make him my friend?"

Answer: Abraham Lincoln

Sadly, Lincoln's enemies did not share his philosophy. They believed the best way to destroy their enemies was through gunfire.
8. William Bligh, Captain of the HMS Bounty, departed his ship by what means?

Answer: By dinghy

Bligh, along with a few other members of his crew, were forced off the Bounty after the crew mutinied. Though a cruel and inept ship's captain, Bligh was a superb navigator and guided the dinghy without charts more than 3,500 miles to safety.
9. How many of Henry the eighth's six wives did he have beheaded?

Answer: 2

Catherine Howard and Anne Boleyn were beheaded after being convicted of treason. Henry was a notoriously fickle king, and divorced two women apart from the two he had executed. He also had a pretty bad split with the Church of Rome, which resulted in the Church of England separating from Roman Catholicism altogether.
10. Boudicca, Queen of the Iceni Tribe in Roman-occupied Britain in the first century A.D., tried to claim her husband's property after his death. How did the Romans treat her claim?

Answer: Flogged Boudicca and raped her daughters

The Romans declared the dead king's will null and void, flogged the widow and raped her daughters. Boudicca repaid the Romans by raising an army and killing tens of thousands of Romans before being defeated. Boudicca committed suicide rather than face capture.
