Ben Bradlee was born into a very wealthy family in Boston, Massachusetts; having so much in common with President John Kennedy that adults they became friends. After Bradlee served the USA for several years - first in the military and then as a staff member of the Office of U.S.

Information and Educational Exchange - he turned his interest to journalism. Bradlee was hired by Katherine Graham to join her family's newspaper, "The Washington Post". Bradlee was the editor at that paper when (as mentioned in the question) he challenged his paper's right to publish information regarding political and military involvement in Vietnam during the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s (what became known as the Pentagon Papers).

He was editor when reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein published their stories documenting the Watergate scandal - the scandal that lead to the resignation of U.S. President Richard Nixon.
