The Simpson Desert is a large desert, covering the 'Corner Country' of South Australia, Queensland and the Northern Territory. The desert is about the size of Uruguay or Florida, and is known for its long sand dunes. Some stretch for up to 200 kms, the longest in the world.

Simpson's father, Alfred Muller Simpson, founded Simpson, a manufacturer of washing machines and dryers. After Simpson senior's death in 1891, Alfred junior took over control of the company. Simpson was eventually taken over by Electrolux, but they used the brand name until 2022.

6. Wallis Simpson caused a major constitutional crisis in the UK, a few years before WWII. A member of British royalty gave up the throne to marry her. Who was the love-struck king?

Answer: Edward VIII

In 1934, Edward, the Prince of Wales, started a relationship with the American socialite, Wallis Simpson. She was still married at the time and did not divorce her second husband until May, 1937

Edward had taken the throne after the death of his father, George V, in January 1936. He reigned until December of that year, but was never coronated. He was known as a bit of a playboy, having a series of affairs, until he met Wallis. He indicated that he would marry her which caused panic at the highest levels. The monarch is the nominal head of the Church of England, which forbade the marriage because of her divorcee status. In the end, he abdicated (resigned), and was succeeded by his younger brother, George VI. He had been on the throne for only 326 days.

Of the wrong answers, Charles III finally made it to the throne in 2022, following the death of his long-reigning mother, Queen Elizabeth II. Henry VIII had no such restrictions on his marriages to divorcees, in fact he declared himself as the boss of the Church of England, in 1534, to enable him to divorce Catherine of Aragon and marry Anne Boleyn. The Pope, Clement VII, refused to approve his actions, and excommunicated Henry.
7. Jessica Simpson is an American pop singer who burst onto the music scene as a teenager, signing a large record deal when she was only seventeen. She released her first album, 'Sweet Kisses' in 1999, when she was nineteen, which spawned a single that went to Top Ten in several countries. What was that single?

Answer: I Wanna Love You Forever

The song peaked at Number 3 on the Billboard charts. 'With You' was released in 2003. 'She covered Berlin's 'Take My Breath Away' in 2004, and in the following year she sang the 1966 Nancy Sinatra classic, 'These Boots Are Made For Walking'. None of these had the chart success of her debut hit.

Simpson also starred in a few comedy movies. She reprised Catherine Bach's portrayal of Daisy Duke in the 2005 movie 'The Dukes of Hazzard'. Starring roles in 'Employee of the Month' (2006) , 'Blonde Ambition' (2007), 'Private Valentine: Blonde & Dangerous' (2008) established her as having more than one string to her bow. She was married to Nick Lachey, from boyband 98 Degrees from 2002 to 2006.
8. John Simpson Kirkpatrick, aka John Simpson, is a war hero in Australia. He was a stretcher-bearer in which iconic WW1 conflict?

Answer: Gallipoli

He was born in England but came to Australia in his teens, and joined the Australian Infantry Force (AIF) when war broke out. He was in the first wave of troops that landed at the ill-fated beach on the Turkish peninsula of Gallipoli. British officers had given wrong orders and the ANZAC troops were massacred. Simpson found a donkey and carried many of his fellow soldiers back to safety. He was technically AWOL but his commanding officer turned a blind eye. Somehow he managed to perform his heroics for almost four weeks before he was killed by Turkish gunfire. He was never awarded any decorations, although he deserved the highest accolades- military and government red tape and bungling will see that he will probably never get one. He was a real hero, and every Australian knows his story.

Passchendaele and Ypres are in Belgium, and Australian soldiers were heaving involved in both battles. Beersheba is in Israel. All three of these battles took place in 1917.
9. George Simpson was a very powerful man in the history of Canada, and upon his death, one of the richest. Which natural material was the basis for his success?

Answer: Fur

He was the governor of the huge Hudson Bay Company, which monopolised the Canadian economy for more than 300 years. The company started in 1670, in England, and built their enterprise through the fur trade. They actually only stopped trading in furs in 2023. Simpson headed the company from 1820 to his death in 1860. His estate was worth the equivalent of a half billion dollars.

The Simpson name lives on, with Sir George Simpson Tower and Simpson Street found in Quebec, and the Simpson Pass on the border of British Columbia and Alberta.
10. Mona Simpson is an author. One of her books is called 'The Lost Father', a semi-autobiographical story, where her and her half-brother search for their dad. Who was her brother, who was adopted out at birth?

Answer: Steve Jobs

Her mother, Joanne Schieble, gave birth to Jobs when she was still a student. She and the father divorced, and she married George Simpson. They had Mona before they divorced in 1970. Jobs eventually tracked down his mother, and met his half-sister when she was 25 years old. Together, they even found their father!

In an ironic twist, Mona married Richard Appel, who was a screenwriter for 'The Simpsons'. He created the character Mona Simpson after his wife. She was the seldom-seen wife of Abe Simpson, and Homer's mother.
