Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What genre of novels do the authors Kim Stanley Robinson and Spider Robinson both write?

Answer: Science Fiction

Spider Robinson has won both the Hugo and Nebula Awards for his work, and in 2008 was given the Robert A. Heinlein Award for Lifetime Achievement.
Kim Stanley Robinson is perhaps best known for his "Mars" series, and is also a respected literary scholar, having studied the work of Philip K. Dick in depth for his doctoral thesis.
2. In which sport were Jackie and Frank Robinson (no relation to each other) among the first African American players to compete at the highest levels?

Answer: Baseball

Although Jackie Robinson did have a brother named Frank, he never played Major League Baseball, and was tragically killed in a motorcycle crash while Jackie was still in high school.
Jackie was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1962, and his shirt number, 42, was the first to be retired in his honour in MLB.
Frank Robinson was twice a member of the Baltimore Orioles team when they won the World Series, and was also elected to the Hall of Fame, in 1982.
3. Singer Smokey Robinson found fame with his band The Miracles, and had many hit records during their career with Motown. Do you know his real first name?

Answer: William

He was christened William Robinson Junior, and got his nickname when one of his uncles called him 'Smokey Joe' as a child.
As well as being inducted into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters' Hall of Fame, Smokey was present, with other members of the Miracles and their families, when the band was honoured with their own star on the Walk of Fame in Hollywood.
4. Mary Robinson made headlines around the world when she was elected as the first female President of which country?

Answer: Ireland

Mrs Robinson was elected in 1990, and served as the Irish President for seven years.
She has since held the post of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, and in 2009 she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by the government of the United States.
5. Both Anne and Tony Robinson are British TV presenters. Is it true or false that they were married to each other for seventeen years from 1983 onwards?

Answer: False

Anne Robinson has presented programmes including "Watchdog", "Points of View", and The Weakest Link" on British television, and also presented the US version of "Weakest Link".
Tony Robinson, after playing the hapless Baldric in the various series of "Blackadder", went on to present the very successful archaeology show "Time Team".
They have never been married to each other, but have both married other people at various times.
6. Edward G. Robinson found fame as an actor, particularly in the gangster films of the 1930s and 40s. Robinson was his stage name, chosen after his family moved to the United States in the early years of the 20th century. In which country was he born?

Answer: Romania

He was born Emmanuel Goldenberg in Bucharest, the capital of Romania.
His family emigrated to the US after suffering antisemitic abuse in their homeland, and he changed his name to Edward G. Robinson when he was in his late teens.
After an acting career spanning half a century, he died of cancer in 1973, just a few days after finishing filming his role as Sol in the science fiction film "Soylent Green".
7. Walker Smith Jr. is classed as one of the greatest boxers of all time. What was his name in the ring? ______ Robinson

Answer: sugar ray

Sugar Ray Robinson held world boxing titles in both the Middleweight and Welterweight divisions during his illustrious career.
In 1990 he was inducted into the Boxing Hall of Fame, and in 2007 ESPN voted him "The Greatest Boxer of All Time".
8. This Mrs. Robinson was the first woman to be made a Fellow of King's College Cambridge, and is recognised as a gifted and influential economist. Along with her colleague Nicholas Kaldor she propounded the "Cambridge Growth Theory". What was her first name?

Answer: Joan

Born Joan Violet Maurice, the daughter of a member of the English aristocracy, she married her fellow economist Austin Robinson in 1925 after they both graduated from Cambridge.
It is a measure of how well regarded her studies were that she took up a post as a lecturer at Cambridge University some years after their wedding, at a time when most women either chose, or were forced, to give up work once they were married.
She also travelled extensively to both Russia and China, and wrote several well received books on their economic policies under Communism.
9. Which of these UK television detective shows was adapted from a series of books written by Peter Robinson?

Answer: DCI Banks

The first of Robinson's novels to feature Inspector Alan Banks was "Gallows View", published in 1987.
The twentieth book, "Watching the Dark", was published in 2012.
In the ITV series, first broadcast in the UK in 2010 and 2011, the part of Inspector Banks was played by Stephen Tompkinson.
10. Bill Bojangles Robinson is famous as an actor, singer, and dancer in musical films, and is perhaps best known for starring alongside Shirley Temple in several big hits of the 1930s. Which of these films, in which he played the lead, was based on the story of Bojangles own life?

Answer: Stormy Weather

"Stormy Weather" was the last film Bojangles ever made, it was released in 1943, and he died in 1949 without ever making another. His leading lady in the film was Lena Horne.
When he worked with Shirley Temple on "The Little Colonel" (1935) Bojangles was the first African American to appear on screen dancing with a white partner. Even though she was just a little girl at the time rather than an adult, it was an important milestone for civil rights and the acceptance of African-Americans into a society that was still fairly rigidly segregated in many ways.
