Answer: William Jennings Bryan

Bryan was the presidential nominee for the Populist Party in 1896 after he gave his famous Cross of Gold and his free silver speech. They called hi the "The Boy Orator of the Platte". Answer: someone doing it.

Elbert Hubbard published an article in May of 1914 called "The Philistine: A Periodical of Protest" in which he wrote about world explorers. But he disclaimed authorship of that phrase which he reworded. Other famous figures who have been attributed credit although no reliable sourcing can be found include Confucius and George Bernard Shaw.

After his ship is attacked by the Dread Pirate Roberts, Westley is reported to be dead.

Franklin P. Adams was a member of the Algonquin Round Table; those other three were not. Peter Benchley's grandfather Robert Benchley, was a member. H.L. Mencken although admired by the group was somewhat critical of the Round Table.

5. The 18th century German physicist and writer Georg Christoph Lichtenberg said that "He who says he hates every kind of flattery, and says it in earnest, certainly does not yet know" what?

Answer: every kind of flattery

He became a professor of physics at University of Göttingen in 1769. He must have been an interesting fellow as he was not only a man of science and philosophy, he was also regarded as one of the best 18th century German wits and satirists. Lichtenberg was something of an 18th-century version of our Amazing Randi--both men debunked "magicians" as being tricksters.

The Amazing Randi of course we remember from the remarkable appearance on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson in which he embarrassed the Israeli psychic Uri Geller who claimed to have telekinetic powers.

In Lichtenberg's case he described the tricks employed by one Jacob Philadelphia who claimed to be a scientist but was more of a showman according to Lichtenberg. Mr. Philadelphia left town without putting on the performance he had announced.
6. What comedian (real name Julius) said this, one of his many trademark quips: "Anyone who says he can see through women is missing a lot."

Answer: Groucho Marx

Born October 2, 1890 in New York City, Julius Henry Marx was known for his bushy eyebrows while always holding a cigar and wearing a grease paint moustache which movie studio executive Walter Wanger had warned him against wearing because it looked so fake. Groucho stoop walked as leader of The Marx Brothers, firing out one-liners and double entendres with the frequency of a machine gun. Groucho made a point of never cursing in any of his stage or TV or film performances saying he didn't want to be known as a dirty comic.
7. The opening line of this poet's poem "For an Autograph" goes: "Though old the thought and oft exprest, 'Tis his at last who says it best..." Who is this 19th century American poet?

Answer: James Russell Lowell

Born February 22, 1819, James Russell Lowell was an American poet of the Romantic genre. He was a member of the Fireside Poets, a notable group of very well-respected New England writers.
The other poets listed were British, not American.
8. "The activist is not the man who says the river is dirty. The activist is the man who cleans up the river." Which U.S. Presidential candidate of the 1990s said this?

Answer: H. Ross Perot

In 1992, Perot ran as an independent presidential candidate, and then ran again 1996 as a third party presidential candidate in a bid that established the Reform Party. Both of those campaigns were unsuccessful, but they were among the strongest showings ever by a candidate not from a major political party. Perot ran for office even after nearly dying of a leukemia secondary infection. According to his family, here are some of his most famous quotes:
"If you see a snake, just kill it - don't appoint a committee on snakes."
"If someone is blessed as I am is not willing to clean out the barn, who will?"
9. Some of her earliest roles were in films such as "Police Academy 4: Citizens on Patrol" and "Deadly Blessing" ergo her saying "be willing to say yes, no matter who says no, and to say no, regardless of who says yes." Who is this Oscar-nominated actress?

Answer: Sharon Stone

Sharon Stone was born and raised in Meadville, Pennsylvania a small town that an ex-girfriend of mine was also from. And get this: they were competing in a small beauty pageant back there years ago, and my ex lost to Ms. Stone. Well, if you're going to lose a beauty pageant you almost can't face a more beautiful rival. Anyway, shortly after that pageant she became a successful Ford model.

Her first significant film role as a actress was in Woody Allen's "Stardust Memories" (1980) as "pretty girl in train." Her first speaking part in a film was in Wes Craven's horror movie, "Deadly Blessing" (1980).
10. Which irish poet/playwright said both of these "Who says" quotes: "What is said of a man is nothing. The point is, who says it." and "The man who says he has exhausted life generally means that life has exhausted him."

Answer: Oscar Wilde

T.S. Eliot was an American who became a British subject, and W.H. Auden was also an Englishman/American. That first quote, "What is said of a man is nothing. The point is, who says it" was written by Wilde while he was imprisoned in Reading Gaol. It was written in a letter called "De Profundis" to Lord Alfred Douglas.
