Roberto Rossellini was married to the beautiful Swedish actress Ingrid Bergman from 1950-1957. She had earlier starred in one of Hollywood's all-time famous films, "Casablanca" (1942). In 1957 Rossellini travelled to India at the behest of Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru who wanted him to make a documentary about his country.

While there he became involved in a dalliance with Sonali Das Gupta, an Indian screenwriter and aspiring actress.

Ingrid Bergman quicky filed for divorce and shortly thereafter Rossellini wed Ms. Gupta to whom he would be married until 1977. Later that year Rossellini died of a heart attack, in the city of his birth.
