Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Prince William and Catherine Middleton announced their engagement on 16 November 2010, although they had already known each other for several years, since they both met when they were undergraduates at which university?

Answer: St Andrews

St Andrew's University is in Fife in Scotland; it was founded in 1413. Both Kate and William started a course on the history of art at St. Andrew's University in Scotland in 2001. They graduated in 2005, although William had switched courses and his degree was in geography.
2. Prince William had carried the ring in his rucksack for about three weeks before proposing to Kate while they were on holiday in Kenya with friends. Where did he get the ring?

Answer: The ring had previously belonged to his mother

The ring was bought from Garrard in London by William's father, Prince Charles, for Lady Diana Spencer when they got engaged in 1981. William wanted Kate to have the ring, since his mother couldn't be around to share the fun and excitement. The ring has a large sapphire surrounded by fourteen diamonds.
3. Prince William arrived at the Abbey with his brother, Prince Harry, who was his best man three quarters of an hour before the service was due to start. What were they wearing?

Answer: Army uniform

It was thought that Prince William might wear his formal Royal Air Force uniform, since he was serving as a search and rescue helicopter pilot at the time of his wedding. However he is the honorary Colonel of the Irish Guards and wore his uniform of a scarlet tunic together with the Garter Sash with the Wings of the Royal Air Force.

Prince Harry wore the uniform of the Blues and Royals, since he was a Captain of that regiment.

Neither Prince William nor Prince Harry wore swords with their dress uniforms.
4. Catherine's sister, Philippa, was her maid of honour. What did she hold in her hands as they processed up the aisle?

Answer: The hands of the two youngest bridesmaids

Catherine, holding the hand of her father Michael, was followed up the aisle by her maid of honour as well as four bridesmaids and two pageboys. Miss Eliza Lopes, Miss Grace van Cutsem, The Lady Louise Mountbatten-Windsor and The Honourable Margarita Armstrong-Jones were the bridesmaids; the pageboys were Master Tom Pettifer and Master William Lowther-Pinkerton. Lady Louise Mountbatten-Windsor is the daughter of the Earl and Countess of Wessex and the Hon Margarita Armstrong-Jones is the daughter of Viscount and Viscountess Linley; both are cousins of Prince William. Grace van Cutsem is the daughter of long-standing friends of Prince William. Eliza Lopes is the granddaughter of The Duchess of Cornwall, Prince William's stepmother. William Lowther-Pinkerton is the son of Prince William's private secretary and Tom Pettifer is Prince William's godson.

Both Grace van Cutsem and Eliza Lopes were only three years old, so Philippa held their hands as they walked up the aisle. She helped to arrange the train on Catherine's arrival, and also carried it as the newly married couple made their way to the Chapel of St. Edward the Confessor to sign the registers.
5. Catherine's outfit was a closely guarded secret until the big day. She kept to the tradition of wearing something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue. What did she borrow?

Answer: A tiara

Catherine wore the Queen's halo tiara which was made by Cartier in 1936, and given by the Duke of York (later King George VI) to his duchess. The tiara was later given to the then Princess Elizabeth as an eighteenth birthday present by her mother. The veil was new. Catherine didn't wear a necklace. There was no sign of a handkerchief.

Something old was the traditional Carrickmacross lacemaking technique used on the bodice of the dress. Something new was a pair of earrings given to the bride by her parents. Something blue was a piece of ribbon sewn inside the dress.

Catherine's dress was designed by Sarah Burton. The dress was made from ivory and white satin with a lace bodice which had a decoration of roses, thistles, daffodils and shamrocks - the four floral symbols of the nations of the United Kingdom. The train was only 2.7m and the veil was made from lace tulle. The bride carried a bouquet of lily-of-the-valley, myrtle, hyacinth and sweet William.
6. All these pieces of music were sung at the service. Which was sung as the bride processed up the aisle with her father?

Answer: I was glad

The introit, 'I was glad', was written by Charles Hubert Hastings Parry. It is a 1902 setting of some of the verses of Psalm 122 and was sung by the choirs of Westminster Abbey and the Chapel Royal. Parry also composed the 'March from the Birds' which was played as the Queen walked up the aisle before the service, and 'Jerusalem' which was sung by the congregation just before the end of the service.

'Love divine, all loves excelling,' was the second hymn, and sung by the congregation immediately after the wedding ceremony itself. The words were written by Charles Wesley and the music by William Penfro Rowlands.

The motet, 'Ubi caritas', was composed by Paul Mealor and premiered in St Andrews in 2010. It was sung after the address by the Bishop of London.

The National Anthem, 'God Save the Queen', was sung by the congregation before the signing of the registers.
7. Who conducted the marriage ceremony?

Answer: The Archbishop of Canterbury

The Dean of Westminster, the Very Reverend Dr. John Hall, welcomed the families to the Abbey conducted the service.

The Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Reverend and Right Honourable Dr. Rowan Williams, solemnized the marriage between William and Catherine.

The Bishop of London, the Right Reverend and Right Honourable Dr. Richard Chartres KCVO, gave the address after the choir had sung the anthem, 'This is the day which the Lord hath made', which had been specially composed for the occasion by John Rutter.

The Archbishop of Westminster, Vincent Nichols, is a Roman Catholic Bishop and was one of the representatives of the Roman Catholic Church as a guest at the ceremony. There were also ministers of the Orthodox Churches, the Methodist Church, and the Presbyterian Church as well as representatives from Judaism, Islam, and various Oriental religions.
8. Who read the lesson?

Answer: James Middleton

As well as escorting his mother, Carole, to the Abbey, Catherine's brother, James, read the lesson, which was taken from chapter twelve of St. Paul's Epistle to the Romans. It was heard between the second hymn and the anthem.
9. Many things were heard to celebrate the wedding, but which wasn't heard in London?

Answer: A 21 gun salute

Thousands of people lined the route between Westminster Abbey and Buckingham Palace, as wells as gathering in Hyde Park and elsewehere to see the ceremony relayed on big screens.

A new fanfare called 'Valiant and Brave' was performed in Westminster Abbey by the trumpeters from the RAF Central Band before the National Anthem was sung.

A full peal of the ten bells in Westminster Abbey was rung after the service. It consisted of more than 5000 changes and lasted over three hours.

There was no 21 gun salute from Hyde Park because of fears of noise pollution.
10. Who or what flew past Buckingham Palace when the wedding party appeared on the balcony?

Answer: The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight

The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight consists of a Lancaster bomber accompanied by two fighters - a Spitfire and a Hurricane. Prince William is their patron. The aircraft flew up The Mall and over the roof of the palace. They were followed by two Tornado GR4s and two Typhoons half a minute later.

The Sea King helicopters are used by the RAF for search and rescue operations. Prince William has qualified as a pilot for one, and, at the time of his wedding, was based at RAF Valley in Anglesey.

The Red Arrows are the RAF aerobatic display team.

Concord was the first supersonic commercial airliner. It first flew in 1969 and was in service from 1976 to 2003.
