Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Mark 5:42 in the NKJV tells of people "overcome with great amazement" when Jesus raised a young unnamed girl from the dead. How old was the girl?

Answer: 12 years

The girl Jesus raised from the dead was twelve years old, as per Mark 5:42. Although the girl is not identified, Scripture states her father was Jairus, the ruler of a synagogue.

The miraculous raising of Jairus' daughter from the dead is one of three such cases documented in the New Testament. The Gospel of Luke tells of Jesus raising a widow's son from the dead at Nain while the Gospel of John tells of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead. Needless to say, people were amazed and astounded when Jesus performed such miracles.
2. A group of women left Christ's tomb, trembling and filled with amazement, as per Mark 16:8. Why were the women trembling and amazed?

Answer: They saw the tomb was empty.

Mark 16:8 tells of women visiting the tomb of Jesus on the Sunday after His crucifixion and then leaving trembling and filled with amazement when they found the tomb empty. The women visiting the tomb were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome. Scripture states they had taken spices to the tomb to anoint His body but, to their amazement, the stone had been rolled away from the entrance.

After entering the tomb, they saw a young man clothed in a long white robe proclaiming, "He is risen! He is not here."

The rest, as they say, is history.
3. Scripture tells of Christ's mother being amazed when she found Him speaking in the temple when He was only twelve years old. What is the only Gospel that contains such an account?

Answer: Luke

The account of Jesus teaching in the temple when He was only twelve years old is found in only the Gospel of Luke. According to Luke 2:48 in the NKJV, the people were "amazed", while Verse 47 also states, "all who heard Him were astonished at His understanding and answers."
4. People were surprised when a paralyzed man was let down through the roof of a crowded house for Jesus to heal, and then they were amazed when Jesus told the man to arise and walk and he did just that. However, the Pharisees were livid with what they saw, as per Luke 5:17-26. Why were the Pharisees livid?

Answer: Jesus told the man his sins were forgiven and then healed him.

While the people were amazed at Jesus miraculously healing the unnamed paralyzed man, the Pharisees were livid. The reason for their extreme anger is the fact that Jesus told the man, in Luke 5:20, that his sins were forgiven before healing him. In the eyes of the Pharisees, Jesus had committed blasphemy by making Himself equal with God.

According to Verse 26 in the NKJV, the people "were all amazed, and they glorified God and were filled with fear, saying, 'We have seen strange things today!'"

See Luke 5:17-26 for more details.
5. Scripture tells of the people being "amazed" at all the things Jesus had done, but then people became puzzled when Christ made a certain statement to His disciples in Luke 9:44. What statement did Jesus make that caused so much puzzlement?

Answer: Jesus predicted His death.

When Jesus predicted He would be betrayed and die, people were puzzled, as per Luke 9:44. However, just moments before, the same people were filled with amazement as Luke 9:27-44 tells of Jesus miraculously healing an unnamed child who was possessed by an unclean spirit. In fact, Verse 43 in the NKJV states, "they were all amazed at the majesty of God."
6. Acts 3:11-0 tells of a paralyzed man being miraculously healed by Peter and the people filled with "wonder and amazement at what had happened." What was the name of the paralyzed man who was miraculously healed?

Answer: No name is given

No name is given for the paralyzed man who was miraculously healed by Peter. However, it is known he was paralyzed from birth and he was more than forty years old, as per Acts 4:22. The man had been begging when Peter, accompanied by John, met him at the Beautiful Gate of the temple in Jerusalem.

While Acts 3:10 in the NKJV tells of the people "filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened", Verse 11 adds they were "greatly amazed".
7. Acts 2:10 in the NKJV tells of people being "amazed and perplexed" when they saw the followers of Jesus one particular morning in Jerusalem. Why were they "amazed and perplexed"?

Answer: Believers were suddenly speaking different languages.

Acts 2:1-12 in the NKJV tells of the Day of Pentecost happening "and suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting." The passage goes on to state there appeared "divided tongues, as of fire" with the believers being filled with the Holy Spirit and speaking different languages.

Needless to say, the general populace was amazed at what had happened. However, some scoffed at the development, simply saying, "they are full of new wine."

Peter promptly pointed out the believers were not drunk, making the onlookers aware "it is only the third hour of the day." Notes in the NKJV Study Bible state the third hour of the day is the equivalent of 9 a.m.
8. A sorcerer was amazed at the miracles being performed by members of the early church to such an extent that he made a profession of faith. According to Acts 8:9, what was the sorcerer's name who became a follower of Jesus Christ?

Answer: Simon

Acts 8:9 in the NKJV says a man called Simon "astonished" the people of Samaria with his sorcery. However, Verse 13 goes on to state Simon became "amazed" when he saw the "the miracles and signs which were done" by workers in the early church and he made a profession of faith and was baptized by Philip.

Later, Simon would be rebuked by Peter for offering money to be able to perform miracles similar to those being done by the apostles. See Acts 8:14-25 for details.
9. The following verse, containing the word 'amazed', is from Acts 9:21 in NKJV: "Then all who heard were amazed, and said, 'Is this not he who destroyed those who called on this name in Jerusalem, and has come here for that purpose, so that he might bring them bound to the chief priests?'" Who is the man in the verse that caused so much amazement?

Answer: Paul

Paul is the correct answer. Acts 9:21 tells of the people being filled with amazement when Paul became a follower of Jesus Christ as previously he had been the biggest enemy of the early church.

However, Paul's life changed completely after he had a dramatic encounter with Jesus on the road to Damascus. Details about that encounter can be found in Acts 9:1-19. After recovering from his encounter with Jesus and spending time with the disciples at Damascus, Acts 9:20 in the NKJV states "immediately he preached the Christ in the synagogues, that He is the Son of God." It was when Paul started preaching the Gospel message people were amazed and asked, "is this not he who destroyed those who called on this name [Jesus] in Jerusalem?"
10. Revelation 17:6 is a verse in the NKJV containing the word 'amazement': "I saw the woman, drunk with the blood of the saints and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus. And when I saw her, I marveled with great amazement." Who is credited with writing Revelation?

Answer: John

John, one of the original Twelve Disciples, is the correct answer. Revelation 17:6 is part of a passage telling of a scarlet woman sitting on a scarlet beast. Revelation 17:5 tells of a message written in capital letters on the forehead of the woman.

The message, in the NKJV, reads:
"MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT,
THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS
AND OF THE ABOMINATIONS
OF THE EARTH."

Revelation, the last book of the New Testament, was written by John while in exile on the island of Patmos.
