Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Moses had received the Ten Commandments and instructions for building the tabernacle on Mt. Sinai. Where was he when he received most of the laws found in the book of Leviticus?

Answer: Tabernacle of meeting

"Now the LORD called to Moses, and spoke to him from the tabernacle of meeting, saying,..." Leviticus 1:1 (New King James Version)

On Mt. Sinai God had given Moses specific instructions for building the tabernacle which would be Israel's place of worship. It was from this tabernacle that he now received from God many of the laws that would teach Israel how to worship and live before him.
2. There are five types of offerings recorded in Leviticus. Why were animals used in burnt offerings?

Answer: To atone for sin

"If his offering is a burnt sacrifice of the herd, let him offer a male without blemish; he shall offer it of his own free will at the door of the tabernacle of meeting before the LORD. Then he shall put his hand on the head of the burnt offering, and it will be accepted on his behalf to make atonement for him." Leviticus 1:3-4 (NKJV)

Before a person could come near to God Old Testament law required that his sins be atoned for. This was done by offering an animal in his place which would atone for his sin and reconcile him to God. In the new Testament Jesus became the perfect sacrifice that would once and for all reconcile a sinner to God.
3. The Israelites were also allowed to make grain offerings to the Lord. What two things were forbidden to be burned with the grain offering to the Lord?

Answer: Leaven or honey

"No grain offering which you bring to the LORD shall be made with leaven, for you shall burn no leaven nor any honey in any offering to the LORD made by fire." Leviticus 2:11 (NKJV)

Leaven and honey because of their fermentation properties represent the corruption of sin and were forbidden to be used in the grain offerings.

Answer: Salt

"And every offering of your grain offering you shall season with salt; you shall not allow the salt of the covenant of your God to be lacking from your grain offering. With all your offerings you shall offer salt." Leviticus 2:13 (NKJV)

It was customary among the people of those days to give a gift of salt when an agreement was made. Salt symbolized the the strength and the permanence of the agreement. The additon of salt with the grain offering reminded the Israelites of God's faithfulness to them and was a sign of their faithfulness to him.

For whoever eats the fat of the animal of which men offer an offering made by fire to the LORD, the person who eats it shall be cut off from his people. Moreover you shall not eat any blood in any of your dwellings, whether of bird or beast. Whoever eats any blood, that person shall be cut off from his people.'"Leviticus 7:22-27 (NKJV)
