Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Much of the book of Leviticus was written in exacting detail. To make proper restitution it was required for the person involved in the sin to make monetary reparations with interest, as well as an animal offering. In regard to what offering for sin was an unblemished ram used for?

Answer: Trespass

Leviticus chapter 5:14-18 detailed the cost of restoration of one involved in unintentional sin. Leviticus 5:18 - "And he shall bring a ram without blemish out of the flock, with thy estimation, for a trespass offering, unto the priest: and the priest shall make an atonement for him concerning his ignorance wherein he erred and wist it not, and it shall be forgiven him."
The addition of "with thy estimation" refers to the monetary worth of the firstborn that was not properly redeemed to the high priest as well as a fifth part more (5:16).
2. In the King James Version, what did the meat offering in Leviticus 2 consist of?

Answer: Flour

Leviticus 2:1 - "And when any will offer a meat offering unto the Lord, his offering shall be of fine flour; and he shall pour oil upon it, and put frankincense thereon."
The odd name of this offering is said to be a remembrance to the Hebrews of God's provision for them while they on their sojourn in the desert.
3. To carry on the high priest's lineage, Aaron had to have sons. In Leviticus 9:9 the Bible said, "And the sons of Aaron brought the blood unto him: and he dipped his finger in the blood, and put it upon the horns of the altar, and poured out the blood at the bottom of the altar." How many sons did he have in total?

Answer: 4

Leviticus 10 gives the name of the four sons of Aaron. 10:1 - "And Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, took either of them his censer, and put fire therein, and put incense thereon, and offered strange fire before the Lord, which He commanded them not." 10:12 - "And Moses spake unto Aaron, and unto Eleazer and unto Ithamar, his sons that were left, Take the meat offering that remaineth of the offerings of the Lord made by fire, and eat it without leaven beside the altar: for it is most holy." By Leviticus 10:12, Aaron had only two sons fit to serve in the temple, as Nadab and Abihu had been punished for breaking the strict laws of the temple.
4. Which of the possible answers would have been considered a clean sea creature according to Levitical dietary law?

Answer: Bass

Leviticus 11:9 says, "These shall ye eat of all that are in that are in the waters: whatsoever hath fins and scales in the waters, in the seas, and in the rivers, them shall ye eat."
Most sea creatures not meeting the criteria, usually scavengers or carrion eaters, were considered to be unclean, perhaps related to their being more prone to carrying disease.
5. In Levitical law, a woman was unclean after giving birth. How many days of purification had to pass before she could bring a burnt offering to the sanctuary for an atonement?

Answer: 40 days for a male baby, or 80 days for a female baby

Leviticus 12:2-5 described the length of time devoted to uncleanliness and purification. For a male child, 7 days of uncleanliness + 33 days of purification made 40 days. For a maid child, 14 days unclean (2 weeks) + 66 days (threescore and six) of purification made 80 days.
6. In what year were the Israelites allowed to eat the fruit of the trees they planted in Canaan?

Answer: 5th

The answer was given in Leviticus 19:23-25. Most likely, the first years were to purge any impurity (symbolic) and allow the planted trees to mature and grow. Also the birds would eat of the fruit and disperse the seeds through their droppings yielding more trees to grow.

The fourth year was dedicated to the Lord (firstfruits). Leviticus 19:23-5 says, "And when ye shall come into the land, and shall have planted all manner of trees for food, then ye shall count the fruit thereof as uncircumcised: three years shall it be as uncircumcised unto you: it shall not be eaten of.

But in the fourth year all the fruit thereof shall be holy to praise the Lord withal. And in the fifth year shall ye eat of the fruit thereof, that it may yield unto you the increase thereof: I am the Lord your God."
7. What was the penalty for anyone who ate of the peace offering on the third day?

Answer: They would be cut off from the people

The instruction to the people was clear. Leviticus 19:6 - "It shall be eaten the same day ye offer it, and on the morrow: and if ought remain until the third day, it shall be burnt in the fire." Now the penalty for not doing so was recorded in Leviticus 19:8 - "Therefore everyone that eateth it shall bear his iniquity, because he hath profaned the hallowed thing of the Lord: and that soul shall be cut off from among his people."
8. God gave Aaron and his sons strict rules to adhere to when ministering in the temple. When Nadab and Abihu brought the strange fire into the Holy place, what was their punishment?

Answer: They were consumed with fire from God

Leviticus 10:1,2 - "And Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, took either of him his censer, and put fire therein, and put fire thereon, and offered strange fire before the Lord, which he commanded them not. And there went out fire from the Lord, and devoured them, and they died before the Lord." The brass or brazen altar was the only place the priests were to obtain fire.

This fire on the brass altar was never allowed to be extinguished and was fed by the priests every morning. There is also conjecture (though not substantiated) that these two had drunk wine or were drunken, which caused them to err, because immediately after this incident Moses forbade Aaron and his remaining family to drink when ministering in the tabernacle, lest they die (Leviticus 10:9).
9. What qualified a land animal as clean to eat in Leviticus 11?

Answer: Cloven-footed and chews cud

The dietary laws were known going back to Noahic times when he took two of the unclean beasts and seven of the clean beasts into the ark (Genesis 7:2). The specifics were recorded in Leviticus 11:3 - "Whatsoever parteth the hoof, and is clovenfooted, and cheweth the cud, among the beasts, that shall ye eat."
10. On the day of atonement, the high priest was required to go into the holy of holies. How was the high priest to do this without gazing upon the glory of the Lord, thus perishing?

Answer: Burn incense to make a cloud of smoke

Leviticus 16:12,13 - "And he shall take a censer full of burning coals of fire from off the altar before the Lord, and his hands full of sweet incense beaten small, and bring it within the veil. And he shall put the incense upon the fire before the Lord, that the cloud of the incense may cover the mercy seat that is upon the testimony, that he die not..."

Now we know the probable purpose for the bells on the bottom of the garment of the high priest. If the bells stopped ringing for a period of time, there was a good chance the priest didn't follow everything to the letter and could have been struck dead on the spot.
