Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the New Testament there are many things taught by Jesus and His followers that "save us." Which of the following is stated not to save us "by itself" in the book of James?

Answer: faith

The phrase "faith by itself" or "faith only" is used only in James 2:17 and James 2:24. The context of the usage is that it is said to be "dead" in 2:17 and justification does not come by it in 2:24. James' emphasis is that only believing in Jesus is not enough to save: even the demons believe and they, certainly, are not in a saved relationship (James 2:19).
2. According to Matthew's gospel, how many wise men visited Bethlehem after Jesus' birth?

Answer: Not known

In Matthew's gospel (2:1-12), the number of wise men is not given. While there are various religious traditions concerning these men (one story from tradition even give their identities), the New Testament does not state how many wise men there were or any other personal information.
3. Money issues may have troubled the followers of Jesus in the 1st century AD. How a disciple handled his money was and is important. According to what the Apostle Paul taught Timothy to teach to believers in 1 Timothy 6 - the love of money is ________

Answer: a root of all kinds of evil.

Discipleship requires that even the way we handle our money is important. Christians are taught not to love money because it is a source of many types of evil in 1 Timothy 6:10 which says "For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil."
4. Finish the quote from Paul's 2nd letter to Timothy (3:12): "Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus ..."

Answer: will suffer persecution.

The quote is from 2 Timothy 3:12: "Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution."

If they are really struggling and facing many obstacles, many believers wonder if they are being faithful enough. Paul teaches that believers will face persecutions and trials in their lives.
5. Jesus's conversations with Pilate in John's gospel shows us how cowardly Pilate was. Pilate's wife even warned him not to have anything to do with Jesus. One reason Pilate should have released Jesus was his knowledge of Jesus's kingdom. Finish the quote from Jesus about His kingdom in John 18:36, "My kingdom is ..."

Answer: not of this world.

The idea of Jesus' kingdom being "not of this world" should have been known by Pilate. Had Jesus' followers been looking for a political kingdom, His followers would be fighting for His release.
6. Freedom (liberty) is an important Bible teaching. Paul taught the Galatian Christians that they were to stand in the liberty through which Christ had made them free (Galatians 5:1). What is the apparent temptation that followed this newfound liberty and freedom found in Galatians 5:13?

Answer: Using their liberty as an opportunity for the flesh.

Many people were under the notion that Gentile believers were to start keeping the Law of Moses. Paul takes great time in his personal efforts and in his letters to teach that a new covenant has been founded in Christ. Freedom, however, can be a dangerous concept when it is completely unrestrained. The freedom in Christ is a freedom to "through love, serve one another" (Galatians 5:13).
7. According to Hebrews chapter 8, which Old Testament prophet was quoted telling of a new covenant where sins would be not be remembered?

Answer: Jeremiah

The writer of the New Testament book of Hebrews quotes from Jeremiah 31:31-34 in Hebrews 8:8-12.
8. Saul, on his way to Damascus to arrest Christians, was taken to Damascus after his "run in" with Jesus. Later, in retelling this story, he says that Ananias tells him to do what (Acts 22:16)?

Answer: Arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord.

While Ananias was skeptical about going to Saul due to his reputation of arresting Christians, he offers the gospel to him and tells him about the way to have his sins forgiven.
9. What two Old Testament prophets does Peter reference in the first public proclamation of the gospel of Jesus after His ascension in Acts 2:14-41?

Answer: Joel and David

Peter quotes Joel 2:28-32, David in Psalms 16:8-11 and David again in Psalms 110:1.
An interesting note about this lesson is that Peter did not grasp the ramifications of all he was led to say by the Holy Spirit that day. In Acts 10, Peter balked at the command to go to a Gentile even though he said that the gospel was for "those who are afar off" in Acts 2:39.
10. According to Revelation 1:1-3 the message to the seven churches could be expected to take place when?

Answer: shortly, for the time is near

John tells the Christians in the seven churches in Asia that things revealed in the message "must shortly take place" in Revelation 1:1. He also relates how important their belief and faithfulness are "for the time is near" in Revelation 1:3.
