Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. According to the Bible, was Eve created from Adam's rib after Adam had been alone for a time, or were Adam and Eve created together?

Answer: Both versions are in the Bible

There are two versions of the creation in Genesis.
Man and woman are created at the same time in Genesis 1:27.
The second sequence (Genesis 2:7) describes how man, first, is created, and then the garden plants, animals, and finally Eve - from Adam's rib.
2. According to the Book of Proverbs, should you answer a fool?

Answer: Yes and No

Proverbs 26:4 says "Do not answer a fool in the terms of his folly" and Proverbs 26:5 says "Answer a fool in the terms of his folly"
3. In the Old Testament, Numbers, Chapter 20, verse 12, Moses is punished by God: "...you shall not lead this assembly into the land I am giving them." Later in the story, Moses dies, after viewing the Promised Land from a distant mountain. According to the New Testament, does Moses enter the Promised Land?

Answer: Yes

In Matthew 17:2-3, there is the account of the Transfiguration of Jesus in Jerusalem -- the Promised Land. The apostles Peter, James and John are witnesses to "suddenly, Moses and Elijah appeared to them; they were talking with him (Jesus)." Peter even offers to make a tent for each of them.
4. According to Matthew's Gospel, Chapter 10, Jesus sends his twelve apostles out on a "training" mission, to cure the sick, raise the dead and cast out devils. Amongst other things, Jesus tells them not to bring a walking stick. When recounting the same story, does Mark's Gospel agree with Matthew?

Answer: No

The twelve are sent out "without a walking stick" in Matthew, Chapter 10, verse 10, but that other gospel writer, Mark, in Chapter 6, verse 8 says Jesus told them to bring just a walking stick...
5. Jesus casts out devils into the bodies of pigs. Then the pigs run down a cliff and drown themselves in a lake. This story is told by three Gospel writers, Matthew, Mark and Luke. Why is Matthew's version different?

Answer: Matthew refers to two possessed persons while the others speak of only one.

Luke, Chapter 8, and Mark, Chapter 5, describe the casting out of the devils with only one possessed "demoniac". Matthew, Chapter 8, mentions that there were two "demoniacs".
6. In Luke, Chapter 23, verses 44-49, there is a description of Jesus' death on the cross. The sequence goes: 1) At three, it was dark and eclipsed, 2) The Temple drapes are torn right down the middle, 3) He cries out (father, into your hands I commend my spirit) and 4) He dies. What do Matthew's and Mark's versions have in common about this event?

Answer: The Temple drapes tear after the death of Jesus on the cross.

Matthew 27:45-56,
1)At three, he cries "why have you deserted me" 2) Vinegar on the sponge presented to him, 3) He cries out and dies, 4)The Temple drapes tear from top to bottom.
Mark 15:33-39,
1)At three, he cries "why have you abandoned me" 2) Vinegar on the sponge presented to him, 3)He cries out and dies, 4) The Temple drapes tear from top to bottom.
7. Three of the Gospels place Mary of Magdala at the foot of the cross when Jesus dies. Those three enumerations also contain names of women who were there. Which Gospel writer includes a man?

Answer: John

Matthew 27: 56 Mary of Magdala, Mary, the mother of James and Joseph, the mother of Zebedee's sons.
Mark 15:40 Mary of Magdala, Mary, the mother of James the younger and Joset, and Salome.
John 19: 25-26, his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas and Mary of Magdala. Seeing his mother and the disciple he loved (John) standing near her...
Luke does not enumerate who was there.
8. Which Gospel does not say that Mary of Magdala was the first to see the resurrected Jesus?

Answer: Luke

Luke 24 describes that Mary of Magdala, accompanied by Joanna and Mary, the mother of James, went to the tomb; so did Peter. But they did not see Jesus. The first ones reported to see Jesus, according to Luke, were two disciples on the road.
The three other Gospels state that Mary of Magdala was the first to see the resurrected Jesus.
9. Who in the Bible disagrees with all the Gospel accounts of the resurrected Jesus' first apparitions?

Answer: Paul

Paul describes in I Corinthians, Chapter 15, verse 5..."that he (the resurrected Jesus) appeared first to Peter and secondly to the twelve".
Luke 24 describes that Mary of Magdala, accompanied by Joanna and Mary, the mother of James, went to the tomb; so did Peter. But they did not see Jesus. The first ones to see Jesus were two disciples on the road.
The three other Gospels state that Mary of Magdala was the first to see the resurrected Jesus.
10. According to the Gospel of John, Thomas was absent when Jesus appeared for the first time to the apostles on the evening of the resurrection. This is when Jesus breathed the Spirit upon the apostles. Therefore, Thomas was an apostle without the Spirit.

Answer: False

John 20:20-23 specifies that Jesus breathed the Spirit on them on the evening of the same day as he resurrected, Easter Sunday. Verse 24 says Thomas was not with them.
However, in Acts 2:13 Thomas is part of the group who received the Spirit "when Pentecost Day came around".
