Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Let's start with what should be an easy one. According to Genesis 19:24, what two wicked cities were destroyed by brimstone and fire?

Answer: Sodom and Gomorrah

Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed by brimstone and fire due to the wickedness of the inhabitants, as per Genesis 19:24. According to Scripture, Lot and his family were told by an angel to flee before God rained brimstone and fire on the cities. The two cities were on the plain of Sidon.

The destruction of the two cities is also mentioned in the New Testament -- 2 Peter 2:6 and Jude 1:4-7.
2. According to Genesis 3:24, cherubim used a flaming sword to deny people entry into a garden. What was the name of the garden?

Answer: Garden of Eden

According to Scripture, God placed cherubim with a flaming sword to deny entry to the Garden of Eden after He drove out Adam and Eve. The first man and the first woman were removed from the garden because they both ate forbidden fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. Genesis 3:24 states God placed cherubim at the east of the garden of Eden "and a flaming sword which turned every way, to guard the way to the tree of life."
3. What prophet of God had a seraph touch his tongue with a hot coal?

Answer: Isaiah

Isaiah is the correct answer as per Isaiah 6:6. In Isaiah 6:1, Isaiah, a prophet of God, states he saw the LORD "sitting on a throne, high and lifted up, and the train of His robe filled the temple." Above the throne were seraphim, each one with six wings.

In Verse 5, Isaiah states: "Woe is me, for I am undone!
Because I am a man of unclean lips,
And I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips;
For my eyes have seen the King,
The LORD of hosts."

After making the statement, Isaiah tells of one of the seraphim flying to him with a live coal in tongs and then touching his mouth with it.

Verse 7 quotes the seraphim as saying: "Behold, this has touched your lips; your iniquity is taken away, and your sin purged."
4. According to Exodus 3:2, who saw God in the form of a burning bush that was not consumed?

Answer: Moses

The account of Moses encountering God in the form of a burning bush that was not consumed is one of the better known stories in the Old Testament. According to Scripture, Moses was tending the sheep of his father-in-law Jethro near Mount Horeb when God appeared to him "in a flame of fire from the midst of a bush."

Scripture goes on to tell of God commanding Moses to remove the sandals from his feet and then informing him he had been selected to lead the Israelites out of Egypt into a land of milk and honey.

See Exodus 3:1-22 for further details.
5. According to 1 Kings 18:16-40, what prophet of God called down fire from heaven to consume an offering on Mount Carmel?

Answer: Elijah

Elijah is the correct answer, as per 1 Kings 18:16-40. According to Scripture, Elijah and four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal had a showdown to see who could call upon a higher power to ignite a sacrificial offering on Mount Carmel. The four hundred and fifty prophets called on Baal and Elijah called on the LORD with Elijah being the clear winner, according to Scripture.

Elijah is well known for many things, but perhaps the best known story involving him is his duel with the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel.

Incidentally, Carmel was such a lovely place that Solomon even compares the beauty of a bride to it. Song of Solomon 7:5, in the NIV Bible, states: "Your head crowns you like Mount Carmel. Your hair is like royal tapestry; the king is held captive by its tresses."
6. According to Leviticus, 10:1-2, what two sons of Aaron were consumed by fire in a case of divine retribution?

Answer: Nadab and Abihu

According to Scripture, Nadab and Abihu were the sons of Aaron and they were "devoured" by fire from the LORD for offering "profane fire" in the tabernacle of meeting. (The NIV states the men were killed because they offered "unauthorized fire".)

Leviticus 10:1-3 in the NKJV states both men took their "censer and put fire in it, put incense on it, and offered profane fire before the LORD, which He had not commanded them." Scripture goes on state "fire went out from the LORD and devoured them, and they died before the LORD."

According to notes in the NIV Study Bible, 'censers' were "ceremonial vessels containing hot coals and used for burning incense."
7. According to Scripture, Daniel had a vision in which he saw a fiery throne with wheels of fire. Who sat on the throne? (Daniel 7:9)

Answer: Ancient of Days

Ancient of Days, another name for God in the Book of Daniel, is the correct answer. Daniel, a prophet of God, tells of his vision involving Ancient of Days in Chapter 7, Verses 7 to 28.

In Verse 7, the prophet of God gives details about the throne:
"I watched till thrones were put in place,
And the Ancient of Days was seated;
His garment was white as snow,
And the hair of His head was like pure wool.
His throne was a fiery flame,
Its wheels a burning fire."

Scripture goes on to tell of a "fiery stream" being issued with "a thousand thousands ministering to Him and ten thousand times ten thousand standing before Him".

In Verse 13, Daniel also tells of seeing "One like the Son of Man coming with the clouds of heaven."
8. According to 2 Kings 2:11, who saw Elijah taken away by a chariot of fire drawn by horses of fire?

Answer: Elisha

Elijah's sudden departure is recorded in 2 Kings 2:11-13, while he was walking along with the prophet Elisha. The NKJV Bible states out of nowhere "a chariot of fire appeared with horses of fire and separated the two of them" with Elijah taken up to heaven in a whirlwind.

Scripture goes on to tell of Elisha stating, "My father! My father! The chariot of Israel and its horsemen" and he saw Elijah no more. Overcome by grief, Elisha tore his clothes "in two pieces".
9. What prophet of God called down fire from heaven to consume an army captain and his soldiers attempting to arrest him?

Answer: Elijah

According to Scripture, Elijah called upon the LORD who consumed with fire a captain and fifty of his men who had been sent by King Ahaziah to arrest him. A second captain and his fifty men attempted to arrest Elijah, and they too were consumed by fire.

Scripture goes on to state a third captain and his fifty men were sent out to arrest Elijah. However, the third group was spared by Elijah after the captain begged for mercy.

For further details, see 2 Kings 1:1-18.
10. In what New Testament book do you read that those whose names are not in the book of life will be cast into a lake of fire?

Answer: Revelation

Revelation is the correct answer, with the statement coming from Chapter 20, Verse 15. The verse in the NKJV states, "...anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire." The verse is part of a passage telling of a great white judgment throne.

Revelation is the last book in the Christian Bible. Tradition holds the book was written by John, one of the Twelve Disciples. However, some modern day theologians dispute this belief. For the record, I am firmly on the side of tradition.
