Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What infant was found floating in a basket on the Nile River by the daughter of the Pharaoh? (Exodus 2:1-10)

Answer: Moses

Exodus 2:1-10 gives an account of the Pharaoh's daughter finding Moses floating in a basket on the Nile River shortly after he was born. Jochebed, the mother of Moses, took such action after the Pharaoh announced a diabolical plan to kill all the Israelites' male babies at birth, as per Exodus 1:22.

After finding Moses floating in a basket, Scripture tells of the Pharaoh's daughter having compassion on him and adopting him to raise as her own son.
2. What is the name of the young girl who was adopted by Mordecai?

Answer: Esther

Esther, who was originally known as Hadassah, was adopted by her cousin Mordecai when she became an orphan, as per Esther 2:7. No details are given in Scripture about how Esther's parents died or if she had brothers or sisters. It is also not known how old she was when she was adopted by Mordecai.

According to various Websites, Hadassah is the Hebrew name for Myrtle while Esther is the Persian name for star.
3. According to Judges 10:3-5, what not so well-known judge of Israel had thirty sons?

Answer: Jair

Although Jair was a judge of Israel, only three verses in the Old Testament are devoted to him. According to Judges 10:3-5, Jair had thirty sons who were in charge of thirty towns. The passage goes on to state the thirty sons of Jair rode on thirty donkeys. However, there is no mention of how many wives Jair had and how many daughters were born to him.

Scripture states Jair ruled Israel for twenty-two years. He was from Gilead and was buried in Camon.
4. Who was the younger -- Jacob or Esau? (Genesis 25:25-27)

Answer: Jacob

Jacob and Esau were twins with Esau being born first, meaning that Jacob was the younger of the two, as per Genesis 25:25-27. Going strictly by Scripture, they were the first set of twins born.

Isaac and Rebekah were parents of the two boys, with Scripture stating Isaac favored Esau while Rebekah favored Jacob.
5. According to 1 Samuel 2:19, who made a "little robe" every year for her son Samuel when she went to make the annual sacrifice?

Answer: Hannah

Hannah, the mother of Samuel, is the correct answer. According to Scripture, Samuel was a miracle baby as Hannah, the wife of Elkanah, was unable to conceive for the longest time. Scripture tells of Hannah fervently praying to God and making a vow that, if she gave birth to a son, the boy would be consecrated to the LORD.

Hannah's prayers were answered and she kept her vow. After Samuel was weaned, Hannah took her son to Eli, the priest and judge of Israel, to rear. 1 Samuel 2:19 tells of Hannah making a "little robe" and giving it to her son year by year when she and her husband visited to make the yearly sacrifice.

According to 1 Samuel 2:21, Hannah conceived and bore three more sons and two daughters.
6. According to 1 Chronicles 3:1-9, what king of Israel had nineteen sons and one daughter by his legal wives?

Answer: David

Going by 1 Chronicles 3:1-9, David had nineteen sons and one daughter. Verses 1 to 3 tell of six sons born to David while he reigned for just over seven years as king in Hebron. The six sons born in Hebron were Amnon, Daniel, Absalom, Adonijah, Shephatiah and Ithream.

Scripture goes on to state also born to David while he reigned for thirty-three years in Jerusalem were Shimea, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon, Ibhar, Elishua, Eliphelet, Nogah, Nepheg, Japhia, Elishama, Eliada, and Eliphelet. The lone daughter born to David was Tamar.

Verse 9 concludes, "These were all the sons of David, besides the sons of the concubines."
7. In the NIV, what young man did Paul advise that an overseer of the church must be able to control his own children? (The NKJV uses the word bishop rather than overseer.)

Answer: Timothy

Timothy is the correct answer, as per 1 Timothy 3:4. The verse is part of a passage in which Paul tells Timothy of the qualities of an overseer. In the passage in the NIV, Paul writes, "Now the overseer is to be above reproach, faithful to his wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not given to drunkenness, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. He must manage his own family well and see that his children obey him, and he must do so in a manner worthy of full respect."

Paul goes on to state if a man cannot rule his own house, "how will he take care of the church of God?"

Similar qualifications are listed by Paul for deacons in Verses 8 to 13.

Timothy was known for being young and timid.
8. The Prodigal Son was younger than his brother. (Luke 15:11-12)

Answer: True

True. The Prodigal Son was younger than his brother, as per information provided by Jesus in Luke 15:11-12.

In the parable, the Prodigal Son moved to an unnamed foreign country and quickly squandered all his money on a wild lifestyle before returning home to his father. To the surprise of the Prodigal Son, his father welcomed him home with open arms and did not condemn him for his past mistakes.
9. Which one of the original Twelve Disciples was probably a twin?

Answer: Thomas

The correct answer is Thomas, although some people see things differently. Those who believe Thomas was a twin point to John 11:16 and John 20:24 in the NKJV which describe him as the Twin. In the NIV, the same verses describe Thomas as Didymus, which also means twin.

However, those who see things differently point out that Thomas could well have been called the Twin simply because he looked remarkably like someone else. Backing up their line of thinking is the fact that other disciples had nicknames and the like. For example, Simon was called Peter, John and James were called Boanerges and Bartholomew was also known as Nathanael.

For the record, it is my belief Thomas was indeed a twin.
10. In what New Testament book written by Paul does it state that parents are to provide for their children and not vice versa?

Answer: 2 Corinthians

The statement by Paul that parents are to provide for their children and not vice verse is found in 2 Corinthians 12:14. To put the verse in context, here's how 2 Corinthians 12:14-15 reads in the NKJV: "Now for the third time I am ready to come to you. And I will not be burdensome to you; for I do not seek yours, but you. For the children ought not to lay up for the parents, but the parents for the children. And I will very gladly spend and be spent for your souls; though the more abundantly I love you, the less I am loved."

The books of 1 Corinthians and 2 Corinthians were addressed to believers in the early church in Corinth, a city in Greece.
