Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Lot is a biblical figure mentioned in the book of Genesis and associated with the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. What was his relationship with the patriarch Abraham?

Answer: Lot was Abraham's nephew

Lot is mentioned in the book of Genesis (Bereshit) and is most notable for escaping the destruction of the city of Sodom. He was the son of Haran, brother of Abraham and was from Ur Kaoedim. He travelled with his uncle Abraham and they entered Canaan where the two raised sheep. When they bickered, Abraham allowed Lot to choose which land to graze his flocks on, and Lot eventually wound up in the Sodom area.

Lot must have realized that Sodom was not a nice place to live. When he lived there, he was visited by two messengers of God and the mob asked for the two to be turned over to them so that the mob could have their way with the two. Lot instead offered his daughters to the crowd... at this point, the destruction of the city was already assured. Lot eventually was saved from Sodom, but his wife turned back and was transformed into a pillar of salt.
2. Lamech was a man in the book of Genesis that was the son of Methuselah. Who was his mariner son?

Answer: Noah

Lamech was the son of Methuselah who was the person who lived the longest in the Book of Genesis, 969 years. Lamech himself lived for 777 years and passed away five years before the great flood came down and wiped out all life on the planet. Lamech's son was Noah, the man who was chosen by God to build the ark and took inside it animals as well as his family members to save them from the deluge. According to the genealogies, Lamech was the eighth generation descendant of Adam through his son Seth.
3. Laish is a character of the Bible who is the father of Paltiel. Paltiel is the second husband of Michal, daughter of King Saul. Who was Michal's first husband?

Answer: David

David is the first husband of Michal, daughter of King Saul. David later succeeds Saul to the throne despite not being of his lineage. Michal was King Saul's second daughter, the first being Merav.

When Goliath was the champion of the Philistines in a battle against the people of Israel, and nobody dared challenge him in single combat, King Saul offered his first daughter, Merav, as a prize to the person who would defeat the giant. When David manages to win, he wants Michal as a wife, and King Saul challenges David to bring the foreskins of 100 Philistines to earn her. David goes to battle and brings 200 foreskins and marries Michal.

Later in the narrative, David becomes king. One of the first demands he has is for Abner ben Ner to bring back his wife Michal. She is living, at that time, as Paltiel's wife. Abner takes her forcefully and Paltiel follows them weeping for Michal to be returned to him. Abner eventually gets frustrated with Paltiel and tells him to return home, which he does. Michal is returned to King David... for a while.
4. Of Jacob's wives, Leah is not loved as much as her sister is because she bears Jacob fewer children.

Answer: False

Leah and Rachel were the daughters of Laban. When Jacob comes and falls in love with Rachel, Laban tricks Jacob into marrying Leah first. Rachel is married to Jacob as well, thus, Leah immediately becomes less-loved. Nevertheless, Leah bears Jacob many children, much to the dismay of her barren sister. God has pity on her and her unloved status and blesses her with four sons: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah. After a while of not having any more children, Leah agrees to help her sister try to conceive, and is rewarded by having two more sons, Issachar and Zebulun, and a daughter, Dinah.

Leah is described as having "tired eyes" when Jacob first meets her.
5. Lael was the father of Eliasaph, a man chosen to lead the Gershonite clan when they were camped in the desert of Sinai. Which tribe did the Gershonites belong to?

Answer: Levi

When Moses and Aaron lead the Israelites out of Egypt, after fourteen months they reach the desert of Sinai and they camp out. In the book of Numbers, Moses assigns different roles to each of the different factions within the nation. He does this in order to instill a sense of belonging and purpose to the newly-freed exiles and to teach them how to be independent and free.

The Tribe of Levi is singled out to deal with the tabernacle, and the three different clans within Levi get specific roles to do: The Gershonites are in charge of everything that goes on outside the tabernacle, mostly protecting it and allowing people entry. The Kohathites were in charge of the inside of the tabernacle, namely, the holy objects. Finally, the Merarites were in charge of the tabernacle itself, building the tent and maintaining it.
6. Laban the Aramean is well-known for tricking Jacob into marrying his eldest daughter, Leah, instead of Jacob's beloved, Rachel. He was already related to the family at the time, however. What was Laban's connection to the Jews?

Answer: His sister was Rebekah, wife of Isaac

Laban was a man who lived in Padan-Aram and was the son of Bethuel. When Abraham's servant (as tradition states, Eliezer), is sent to find a wife for Abrahan's son, Isaac, he reaches Bethuel's family. His son, Laban, is impressed by the riches that the servant brings and he plays a part in negotiating for his sister to be given to Isaac in marriage.

Laban later is sheep-owner in his own right. When his nephew, Jacob, comes and falls in love with his daughter, Laban agrees to let him marry Rachel in return for seven years of work. When the wedding comes, Laban switches out Rachel and Jacob marries Leah instead. A further agreement to work another seven years allows Jacob to marry Rachel. Under Jacob's supervision, Laban's flocks grow and he becomes a very rich man.
7. According to I Chronicles 20, Lahmi is the brother of Goliath, a giant who David killed. What nation did Lahmi (and Goliath) belong to?

Answer: Philistine

Lahmi is said to be the brother of Goliath, the giant champion of the Philistine nation. Goliath, as we know, was killed by David. At that point in his life, David was a nobody. He was an eighth son of a shepherd who came across kingship for his people. Lahmi was said to have been killed by Elhanan, son of Jair. Elhanan was one of David's warriors.

Originally, the text has Elhanan killing Goliath, however, the text prepares us for any discrepancies and corrects by having Lahmi be the one who was killed by Elhanan.
8. Lo-Ruhamah and Lo-Ammi are two of the children of the prophet Hosea and his wife, Gomer. Which of these adjectives would best describe Gomer, according to the Bible?

Answer: Promiscuous

In Hosea 1:2, God speaks to Hosea and tell him to "Go, take unto thee a wife of harlotry and children of harlotry". Thus, Hosea weds Gomer and has three children with her. The first is a son and is called Jezreel (named for the Jezreel valley), the second is a daughter called Lo-ruhamah (meaning "no compassion"), and the third is a son who is called Lo-ammi (meaning "not my nation").

These names are given by God to the kids as an allegory for how God feels about the people of Israel who have descended into sin. Hosea is a prophet of doom due to the situation, but his ministry also has an underlying message of redemption.
9. Letushim and Leummim were both sons of Dedan, a son of Jokshan, a son of Abraham. Mentioned in the Book of Genesis, Jokshan was not born to Abraham's first wife, Sarah. Who was the mother of Jokshan and Abraham's second wife, great-grandmother to Letushim and Leummim?

Answer: Keturah

Keturah was the second wife of Abraham. She is mentioned in Genesis 25 as having six sons, and seven of her grandsons are named as well. One of those grandchildren, Dedan, has three sons himself who are mentioned as being descendants of Keturah.

Keturah herself is considered to be a minor character, however, as the wife of Abraham, she probably had a very big role to play. She married Abraham after his first wife, Sarah, passed away. Some scholars believe that she is the same person as Hagar, the concubine of Abraham and the mother of Ishmael. Hagar was banished, so, if she returned to Abraham, she received a new name. Keturah means "incense".
10. This son of Jacob was the third born, and his descendants became the priests of the Children of Israel. Who was this 'L' character from the Bible?

Answer: Levi

Jacob, the patriarch married two wives, sisters. Rachel was initially barren while her sister, Leah, was very fertile. Firstborn was Reuben and Simeon came second. Then, the thirdborn was Levi. These sons, and the nine others, populated the land and became the Tribes of Israel. Now, most of the tribes were of the regular kind, but, the Tribe of Levi was special. The members of this family took on the priestly duties for the Children of Israel while wandering in the desert and afterwards when they entered Canaan. Having no lands of their own, their livelihood depended upon the offerings brought to the altars, and later the Temple, by the people of Israel.

Levi, in his life, was not particularly remarkable. One of the things he did do was protect the honour of his sister, Dinah. After she was raped by Shechem, son of Hamor, Levi and his brother Simeon exacted revenge by slaughtering the people of the city of Shechem as they were recovering from a circumcision. Brutal!
