Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these kings took Sarah as his wife because Abraham introduced her as his sister, hiding the fact that they were married?

Answer: Abimelech

When Abraham moved to the region of Gerar, he was afraid the king would kill him in order to marry Sarah. Fearing this fate, he lied that Sarah was his sister and Abimelech married her. God, however, intervened and revealed to the king that Sarah was a married woman and a relationship with her would bring curses. Abimelech then returned Sarah to Abraham and also gave him livestock and servants as gifts to make up for his inadvertent transgression.
2. According to the book of Genesis, did history repeat itself with Isaac also passing off his wife Rebekah as his sister in a foreign land?

Answer: Yes

A famine in the land forced Isaac to seek to move elsewhere. God told Isaac to stay in the land he had promised to Abraham and not move to Egypt. So Isaac approached Abimelek, the king of the Phillistines in Gerar. When the men of the land enquired if Rebekah was his wife, he lied that she was his sister fearing they would kill him so they could have her.
3. When Joshua was preparing to take over Jericho, he sent two spies ahead to scout the city. Which of these women helped to hide them and thus secured the protection of the Israelites?

Answer: Rahab

Rahab was a prostitute living in Jericho. The two spies sent by Joshua went and stayed at her house. However, when the king sent his men to inquire if any foreigners had entered her house, she claimed that while they had come earlier, they had left for the city gate and urged the soldiers to hurry and catch them before they left the city.

The Israelite men promised to spare the life of Rahab and her family if she kept them hidden from the king. She lived up to her end of the deal and succeeded in protecting herself and her family.
4. Which Israelite judge was told not to reveal the secret behind his supernatural strength?

Answer: Samson

The birth of Samson was foretold by an angel who also told the parents that no razor should be used on his head. Samson's long hair was the secret of his strength. When the Philistines were unable to defeat him, they paid a woman to entice him and get him to reveal the source of his might, and finally managed to capture him.
5. What did Daniel request the guard to keep secret during the three years that he was being trained to enter the king's service?

Answer: His diet

When Nebuchadnezzar, the Babylonian king, conquered Judah, he had young men from the royal lineage who exhibited certain desirable traits chosen to serve in his court. These men were to be trained for three years prior to their appointment to the court. Daniel was one among the chosen ones.

The men were assigned food and wine from the king's table to ensure their wellbeing. Daniel however requested that he and his friends be given only vegetables and water so that they were not defiled by eating food that may have been sacrificed to the Babylonian deities.

The guard agreed to allow this for ten days as a test. At the end of this period, Daniel and his friends looked healthier than the men who were eating the food from the king.
6. Which Biblical queen was instructed by her cousin to keep her Jewish identity secret?

Answer: Esther

Esther was an orphan who was brought up by her cousin, Mordecai. When king Xerxes (also known as Ahasuerus) chose her to be his new queen, Mordecai advised Esther not to reveal her Jewish background. The reasons for this have not been laid out in the Biblical account, although various scholars have propounded different theories for this.

However, later when the lives of the Jewish people were at risk, Esther successfully interceded on their behalf without fearing for her own safety.
7. At the time of Jesus' birth, he was visited by Magi from the East who had followed a star to find him. Which person were the Magi specifically warned not to meet before returning to their country?

Answer: Herod

The Gospel of Matthew gives an account of the Magi from the East following a star to come and pay their respects to the baby Jesus. When they reached Jerusalem and started making enquiries about the baby, the news reached Herod who was disturbed to hear about the birth of the future 'king of the Jews'.

He called the Magi and asked them to inform him once the child had been found. The Magi were, however, warned in a dream not to meet Herod, and returned to their country by a different route after they had found and worshiped the baby Jesus.
8. After the Magi had left, which country did Joseph secretly take his family to in a bid to escape the slaughter of babies by the king?

Answer: Egypt

Herod was furious when he realised that the Magi had returned to their country without meeting him and sharing details of the baby they had come to pay their respects to. Afraid of a new ruler rising against him, he ordered all the male children below the age of two to be killed. An angel appeared to Joseph in a dream and warned him to leave the country for the safety of the child.

In obedience, Joseph took his family and left for Egypt in the night itself.
9. The gospels contain an account of an event known as the 'Transfiguration'. Which of these disciples was not present during this occurrence?

Answer: Andrew

Jesus took Peter and the brothers, James and John along with him up a mountain. These three disciples formed a close inner circle of Jesus. On the mountain they encountered Moses and Elijah. When Jesus met with them, his face began shining like the sun.

Then a voice from heaven declared "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him". Hearing this, the disciples fell to the ground afraid. When at last they looked up only Jesus was standing on the mountain. On their way, Jesus told them not to speak about the things they had seen until he had risen from the dead.
10. After performing which of these miracles did Jesus command the person involved not to tell anyone about it?

Answer: Cleansing of the leper

This account is found in the first chapter of the gospel of Mark. A man suffering with leprosy came to Jesus asking for healing. Jesus healed him and then instructed him not to speak about this miracle to anyone but go and show himself to the priest so that he may be declared clean.

However, the man was too overjoyed to keep this to himself and freely spoke of his healing. People then began to seek out Jesus for miracles so he could no longer conduct his ministry openly in the towns and kept to the more lonely areas.
