Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Cropping
Answer: Photography
In a photographic sense, cropping is the removal of the outer parts of an image. This is typically done to improve the framing of the subject, to remove irrelevant detail or to change the aspect ratio of the image. It can also mean cutting hair or harvesting crops.
2. Watermark
Answer: Stamp collecting
Watermarks are a feature of some stamps that can add considerably to a stamp's value to a collector. Otherwise identical stamps sometimes can only be distinguished by the presence (or absence) of a watermark. Although some watermarks can be seen by looking at the back of a stamp, a 'watermark' liquid or specialist equipment is often required to find them.
3. Grafting
Answer: Gardening
Grafting is the name given to a technique for the propagation of plant material. Material from two different plants are grafted to each other to produce a plant which shares the characteristics of its two parents.
With fruit trees, trees grown from seed rarely produce fruit as good as the parent plant, although there are some exceptions. Grafting a cutting from the fruit tree gets over this problem. It also reduces the time taken before the new tree is mature enough to produce fruit. Other reasons for grafting include producing a plant tolerant of different growing conditions, to gain disease or pest resistance and to reduce the size of the mature tree.
4. John Dory
Answer: Fishing
Also known as St Pierre or Peter's Fish, the John Dory is a member of the Zeus genus, typically Zeus faber, with a wide distribution. It features a large dark spot on its flank which, according to one legend, is St Peter's thumbprint. It can be found in coastal areas near the sea bed and eats smaller fish and can be found where its prey accumulate. It's quite delicious.
5. Troll Wall
Answer: Climbing
Located in Norway, the Troll Wall is Europe's largest vertical wall at some 1,100 metres. Both climbers and BASE jumpers are drawn to it, even though BASE jumping from the wall was made illegal in 1986 due to the number of deaths arising. The wall was first climbed in 1965 and the first BASE jump made from it in 1980.
6. Hoopoe
Answer: Bird watching
The hoopoe is crested bird with long tapering beak and a characteristic undulating form of flight, and is found across Africa, Asia and Europe. Its English name is either onomatopoeic (its bird call sounds like: oop-oop-oop) or possibly derived from the French name, huppée (meaning crested). Hoopoe in non-tropical areas migrate to the tropics in the winter.
7. Tzatziki
Answer: Cooking
From Greece, Tzatziki is a sauce made to accompany grilled meats. It is also served as a dip. Yoghurt is typically combined with cucumber, garlic, olive oil and mint or dill to make the sauce.
8. Dart
Answer: Needlework
In the context of sewing, darts are folds sewn into fabric to provide shape to a garment. By taking darts, clothing can be tailored to a person's shape.
9. Kaolin
Answer: Pottery
Kaolin is another name for china clay and is the main component of porcelain. It is or has been used in various other areas such as in toothpaste, paint, cosmetics, and to accelerate blood clotting. It is also sometimes taken as a digestive aid and as a base for medicines.
10. Narcosis
Answer: Scuba diving
In the diving world, narcosis refers to the effect caused by breathing gases at depth. The effects vary depending on the gas and only helium (and possibly neon) has no effect. For the amateur diver, nitrogen is the main gas to be concerned about. Nitrogen narcosis has been likened to drunkenness but is reversible; the effect reduces a few minutes after the diver moves to a shallower depth. Being "drunk" underwater is dangerous so many commercial divers breathe mixtures such as trimix or heliox, where helium gas replaces much or all of the nitrogen component of breathing air.
