Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Fill in the blank. Joshua 6:20 (King James Version) states "So the people shouted when the priests blew with the trumpets, and it came to pass, when the people heard the sound of the trumpet, and the people shouted with a great shout, that the __________ fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they took the city."

Answer: Wall

Throughout the books of Moses, the Israelites were told that they would enter the promised land and attack the people already living there. In the book of Joshua, they began to do this. They spent several days marching around the walled city of Jericho.

They were told that the wall would fall when they blew the trumpets and shouted. When "the wall fell down flat", they entered the city and took what they wanted.

3. Which Christian doctrine maintains that God is three distinct entities in one?

Answer: Trinity

The doctrine of the Trinity is one of the foundations of mainstream Christianity. It holds that the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are three separate and distinct identities in one divine Being, the Godhead. Prior to the coming of Jesus, God was seen only as the Father.

But Trinitarians argue that even in the Old Testament clues were given to this concept, most notably in Genesis 1:26-27, which reads, "Then God said, 'Let Us make man in Our image...'"

6. Who is the male patron saint of dancing?

Answer: Saint Vitus

Saint Vitus was born in Sicily in the late 3rd century CE (probably 290 CE). He was persecuted by the Roman Emperors Maximian and Diocletian and died a martyr at the age of around 12-13. He was venerated in the late middle ages and the people in the area that is now Germany used to dance around his statue on his holy day (now June 28 using the Gregorian Calendar).

This energetic dancing then led to the name 'Saint Vitus Dance' referring to the neurological affliction Sydenham's chorea, which is marked by erratic and jerky limb movement.

7. Which religious sect has shrunk to only one community, in Maine USA, due to a belief in celibacy and communal living?

Answer: the Shakers

Well, if you said "Catholics", your world awareness could be higher. The Amish are the small, strict, insular, but well-known Mennonite sect with a concentration in the Lancaster, PA area. No one knows the numbers of The Moonies, a colloquial term for members of the Unification Church, who follow the Reverend Sun Yung Moon, but they are legion and worldwide.

The Reverend performed a mass wedding of 7,000 couples in Korea in 2010. The Shakers are a group which split off from the Quakers in 18th century England.

They settled in Lebanon, New York c. 1750, then ended up in Maine after their numbers dwindled.

8. The Holy See is the diocese of the Pope. Why is it called a see?

Answer: in reference to the episcopal seat

The word see is derived from the Latin 'sedere' a verb meaning to sit. Every bishop has a see: when he sits in the official throne of the diocese and makes proclamations, he is said to be speaking 'ex cathedra', and the building where it is located is usually called a cathedral.

While all sees are holy, Roman Catholics only use the term in reference to the see which is based in Vatican City (although the official cathedral of the Holy See is the Archbasilica of Saint John Lateran, in the city of Rome, not the more famous St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican City).

9. Opus Dei is an institution of the Roman Catholic Church. Formed in 1928, it teaches that everyone is called to holiness and everyday life is a path to sanctity. Who is recognized as the founder?

Answer: Josemaria Escriva

Josemaria Escriva de Balaguer y Albus(1902-1975) was a priest from Spain who started the group in 1928. He was Beatified in 1992 by Pope John Paul II and Canonized in 2002 by Pope John Paul II. Opus Dei received final Catholic Church approval in 1950 by Pope Pius XII.

In 1982, Pope John Paul II, through a decree known as the Apostolic constitution, established Opus Dei as a personal prelature. This is similar to a diocese so it has its own priests and lay people who are led by a bishop.

10. Which order of monks are often thought of as taking a vow of silence?

Answer: Trappist

Trappists are NOT bound by a code of silence, but they do consider unnecessary talking to be a hindrance to their studies. They do, however, use sign language.

Essenes were a Jewish order of scholars who existed two millennia ago, and Sanyassa are the Hindu equivalent of a monk. The Franciscans generally take a vow of poverty, but not of silence.
