Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Genesis 31:18 tells of a man carrying away "all his livestock and all his possessions which he had gained" in Padan Aram to go to his father Isaac in Canaan. What was the name of the man who took all the possessions he gained to Canaan?

Answer: Jacob

Jacob, the husband of Leah and Rachel, is the correct answer. Genesis 31:1-55 tells of Jacob receiving divine instructions to leave the employment of his father-in-law Laban and to return to Canaan. Verse 18 in the NKJV states Jacob "carried away all his livestock and all his possessions which he had gained, his acquired livestock which he had gained in Padan Aram, to go to his father Isaac in the land of Canaan." (In the NIV, Padan Aram is spelled with double 'd's in Padan.)

While Isaac was Jacob's father, his mother was Rebekah.
2. According to 1 Samuel 8:3 in the NKJV, two sons of Samuel, generally regarded as the last judge of Israel, did not walk in his ways as "they turned aside after dishonest gain." What were the names of the two dishonest sons?

Answer: Joel and Abijah

Samuel, generally regarded as the last judge of Israel, had a sterling reputation for honesty and serving God. However, such wasn't the case with his two sons Joel and Abijah. According to 1 Samuel 8:1-3, the two sons briefly served as judges of Israel but were quickly dismissed. Verse 3 in the NKJV explains "his sons... turned aside after dishonest gain, took bribes, and perverted justice."
3. The following is a quote containing the word 'gain' from the Old Testament using the NKJV: "For what is the hope of the hypocrite, though he may gain much, if God takes away his life?" What long suffering man made the statement?

Answer: Job

The statement was made by Job and can be found in Job 27:8. To put the verse in context, here's how Job 27:7-9 reads in the NKJV: "May my enemy be like the wicked, and he who rises up against me like the unrighteous. For what is the hope of the hypocrite, though he may gain much, if God takes away his life? Will God hear his cry when trouble comes upon him?"

The book of Job tells of a series of calamities Job suffered through, and how his friends tried to console him. However, through his ordeal, Job remained faithful to God.
4. The following verse containing the word 'gain' is from Psalm 90:12 in the NKJV: "So teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom." Psalm 90 is unusual in the sense it was written by Moses.

Answer: True

True. Psalm 90 is different than the one hundred and forty-nine other Psalms in the sense it was written by Moses. In fact, it is the only Psalm Moses is credited with writing.

David is credited with writing more than seventy of the Psalms with other contributors being Asaph with twelve Psalms and Korah with eleven Psalms. Solomon is credited with writing two Psalms while Ethan and Heman are credited with writing one each. There are fifty Psalms in which the author is not known. (Information is from Overviewbible.com.)
5. Using the NKJV, here's a verse from the Old Testament containing the word 'gain': "He who is greedy for gain troubles his own house, but he who hates bribes will live." In what book do you find this verse?

Answer: Proverbs

The verse is from Proverbs 15:27. The Book of Proverbs is a collection of witty sayings and the like largely written by Solomon, a king of Israel who was known for his wisdom. (Agur and Lemuel are also credited with contributing to the book.)

Using versions such as the KJV, NKJV and NIV, Proverbs consists of thirty-two chapters, and appears immediately after the Book of Psalms in both the Hebrew Bible and the Christian Bible.
6. The following verse containing the word 'gain' is from Ecclesiastes 3:6, using the NKJV: "A time to gain, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to throw away." The verse, or words similar to it, is part of a popular song from the 1960s by the Byrds called 'Turn, Turn, Turn'.

Answer: True

True. Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 is featured in the hit song from the 1960s called 'Turn, Turn, Turn'. The song was written by Pete Seeger in the late 1950s, according to Wikipedia, and was originally recorded by the Limeliters in 1962. However, a version by the Byrds is the most popular rendition, at least in record sales.

The wording of the song 'Turn, Turn, Turn'is based on the KJV Bible, which, incidentally does not use the word 'gain' in Verse 6. Rather, the KJV states there is "a time to get".
7. The following verse, quoting Jesus telling a parable, is from Matthew 25:22 in the NKJV: "He also who had received two talents came and said, 'Lord, you delivered to me two talents; look, I have gained two more talents besides them.'" What is the common name for the parable?

Answer: The Parable of the Talents

Matthew 25:22 is part of a parable told by Jesus that is generally known as the Parable of the Talents. The parable runs from Verse 14 to Verse 30 in Chapter 25.

According to the passage, a man who had three servants traveled to a foreign country. Before his departure, he gave one servant five talents, another servant two talents and third servant one talent.

The servant who received five talents invested them and made an additional five talents. The servant who received two talents also doubled his money. However, the servant who received one talent dug a hole in the ground and hid it.

When the man returned from his visit he expressed delight in what the first two servants had done, but was angry with the third servant who did not report any increase in value.
8. The following verse from the NKJV is a famous quote by Jesus: "For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?" This verse and two others very similar to it are found in three different Gospels. What is the only Gospel that does not contain such a quote from Jesus?

Answer: John

The verse in question is not found in the Gospel of John. However, verses expressing the thought a man will not gain anything if he gains the whole world and loses his soul can be found in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke.

It must be pointed out the verses are remarkably similar, but not identical using the NKJV.

Here are the three Bible verses quoting Jesus:

-- Matthew 16:26: "For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?"
-- Mark 8:36: "For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?"
-- Luke 9:25: "For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and is himself destroyed or lost?"

It should not come as a surprise a similar verse is not found in John. While the first three Gospels tell of Christ's ministry over a three-year period, John largely concentrates on the period just before His crucifixion, resurrection and ascension to Heaven.
9. Here's a famous statement by Paul, using the NKJV: "For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain." In what New Testament book do you find this statement?

Answer: Philippians

The famous statement made by Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles, is found in Philippians 1:21. The verse is part of a passage in which Paul writes about living in Christ, as well as striving and suffering for Christ.

Philippians is one of thirteen New Testament books Paul is credited with writing.
10. The following verse is from Philippians 3:8 in the NKJV and was addressed to believers in Philippi: "Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ." Where was Philippi?

Answer: A city in ancient Greece

Philippi was a city in ancient Greece. It was at Philippi, Paul converted Lydia, the seller of purple cloth, and the unnamed jailer to Christianity. Paul visited the city during his second missionary journey.

The Book of Philippians was written by Paul and addressed to members of the early church in Philipi. Using versions such as the KJV, NKJV and the NIV, the book consists of four chapters.
