Genesis 37 Trivia Quiz

This quiz is based on the New Living Translation version (NLT). This is also one of my favorite Bible stories, so I had to create a quiz on it.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where did Jacob settle in Genesis 37:1?

Answer: Canaan

According to Genesis 37:1, Jacob settled in Canaan. He didn't settle in Egypt until after Joseph became a leader of the land. Then he moved his entire family to Egypt to live with Joseph and his family. (Genesis 47:11)
2. How old was Joseph when he tended to his father's flocks?

Answer: 17

According to Genesis 37:2-3, he was tending to his fathers flocks after the second dream and after making his brothers jealous again. When he went to tend to his father's flocks along with his brothers he reported to his father the bad things they were doing. This was another reason why Joseph was the favorite son of Jacob and Rachel.
3. Why did Jacob love Joseph more than his other sons?

Answer: Because he had been born to him when he was old

Joseph was not only the favorite child but his brothers were basically ignored. In the movie "Joseph, King of Dreams" his father tells Judah (the oldest) that the reason why he was more anxious about Joseph's birth was because he had been told that Rachel could never have children. This is also found in Genesis 37:3.
4. What was the "special" gift that was given to Joseph by his father?

Answer: a beautiful coat

In "VeggieTales" this was portrayed as a tie-dyed vest. In "Joseph, King of Dreams" it is portrayed as a long robe-like coat with sparkles and detailed work. According to Genesis 37:3 it was a "beautiful robe". In the same verse but in the King James version it was referred to as a "coat of many colors", in the New King James it is a "tunic of many colors" and in the New International it was a "robe that was richly ornamented".
5. After the point when they could not say a kind word to him, what caused Joseph's brothers to hate him "even more"?

Answer: him telling them his first dream

According to Genesis 37:4-5, his brothers hated Joseph and couldn't say a kind word to him when his father gave Joseph the coat -- but they hated him "even more" when he told them about his first of two dreams.
6. What was Joseph's first dream about?

Answer: bundles of wheat

According to Joseph in Genesis 37:7, there were eleven wheat bundles representing Joseph's eleven brothers. All of the bundles ended up bowing down to Joseph's bundle. This was basically the same thing that happened in his second dream but with stars, the moon and the sun instead of wheat bundles.
7. Before being sold, how many dreams did Joseph have?

Answer: 2

He had two. One was with bundles of grain (Genesis 37:5-7) and the other was with the sun, moon and stars (Genesis 37:9). However, while he was in Egypt he interpreted the dreams of two of his fellow cellmates, the royal cup bearer and the royal baker (Genesis 40:12-13, 18-19), and the two dreams of the pharaoh (Genesis 41:25-28).
8. What did Joseph's brothers call him when they saw him coming?

Answer: dreamer

According to Genesis 37:19-20, they were conspiring to kill him, throw him in a pit, and tell their father that a wild animal killed him.
9. Who came to Joseph's rescue and prevented him from being killed by his brothers?

Answer: Reuben and Judah

According to Genesis 37:21-28, Reuben stopped his brothers from killing Joseph, but Judah, believing he was still in danger, saved him from being killed by selling him as a slave to a caravan. He was then later sold to Potiphar to work for Potiphar's wife.

When he was sold to Potiphar is when Potiphar's wife "came on to" Joseph and got him thrown in jail, where he interpreted two dreams of his cell mates.
10. How many women produced Joseph's brothers, be they full or half?

Answer: 4

Bilhah, Zilpah, Rachel and Leah. Leah is Jacob's wife because when he thought he had consummated his marriage with Rachel, he woke and found that Rachel's father had put Leah with him -- making him married to Leah. Her father claimed that he did this because he wanted the oldest daughter married first.

He later married Bilhah, Zilpah, and Rachel. Bilhah was Rachel's servant and Zilpah was Leah's servant. (Genesis 37:2, 29:22-30)
