Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The "Catan" series of games are all about exploration, trade, and friendly competition. In addition to the expansions that go with the base game, there are also a number of stand-alone variants. Which of these is about the home country of Klaus Teuber, the creator of "Catan"?

Answer: Catan Geographies: Germany

Klaus Teuber published the very first "Catan" Game in 1995 in Germany, called "Die Siedler von Catan". It very quickly became popular outside of Germany, and the basic game (for four players) was given a six-player extension in 1996.

"The Settlers of Catan" base game has four expansions: "Seafarers" (1997), "Cities & Knights" (1998), "Traders & Barbarians" (2008), and "Explorers & Pirates" (2013).

And among the many other stand-alone games that have also been created by Klaus Teuber in the "Catan" format, the answer to this question is "Catan Geographies: Germany", where you can settle and build in Teuber's home country, while also constructing many of its historical landmarks. It was first published in 2008.
2. In this game created by Matt Leacock, players must work together to prevent the spread of virulent diseases around the globe. What is it called?

Answer: Pandemic

Matt Leacock first published "Pandemic" in 2008. In the game, four different diseases develop in different parts of the globe, and all the players must work together to contain outbreaks while also trying to research the cures for each of the diseases.

Three expansions that bring new rules and scenarios, as well as the possibility of a fifth player, have been published: "Pandemic: On the Brink" (2009), "Pandemic: In the Lab" (2013), and "Pandemic: State of Emergency" (2015).
3. In the original version of this game by Alan R. Moon, players compete with each other to connect different cities in the United States and Canada with trains. What is its name?

Answer: Ticket to Ride

"Ticket to Ride" was first published in 2004 and quickly became a popular family game, winning the Origins Award for Best Board Game of 2004. Since its release, a number of other editions have been published (as standalone games) featuring different locations, including Europe (2005), the Nordic countries (2007), and Germany (2012) as well as one based on the Märklin model trains (2006). Expansion kits that feature other maps have also been introduced that must be used with one of the existing boards.
4. Invented in 1957, this classic strategy game involves the conquest of a world divided into 42 territories across six continents. What game?

Answer: Risk

"Risk" can be played with between three and six players, and each person vies for world domination. While luck has a lot to do with the game (battles are decided using dice), how you manage your troop disposition and how you decide to expand or consolidate your territories is also crucial for success. And if you can make some non-aggression pacts with one or two of your competitors (if you can trust them), the game can be quite engaging.

Originally only included in games for the European market, mission cards are also part of the game (if you so choose to use them) where players don't have to conquer the entire world to win the game. Considering that a full game can last hours (or days), this is one way to limit the time it takes to win.
5. This classic game has expanded from its original 1979 'general knowledge' focus to delve into dozens of themed editions. My favourite (2018) version has 'The Cantina' and 'The Saga' as two of the six available categories. Which themed edition of Trivial Pursuit is it?

Answer: Star Wars

The original edition of "Trivial Pursuit" has six colour-coded categories that correspond to coloured pie-shaped pieces that would fill your wheel-shaped player piece as you answer questions correctly (at certain spots on the board). The categories are Geography (blue), Entertainment (pink), History (yellow), Arts & Literature (brown), later purple, Science & Nature (green), and Sports & Leisure (orange).

There have actually been a few different "Star Wars" themed editions of "Trivial Pursuit" over the years:

"Star Wars Classic Trilogy Collector's Edition" (1997);
"Star Wars Episode I" (1998);
"Star Wars Saga 2" DVD (2005); and
"Star Wars - The Black Series Edition"

The "Star Wars - Black Series Edition" has the categories of:

The Cantina (blue) - scense, aliens, cameos, etc.
The Force (red) - for every action, there is a reaction
Heroes, Villains & Scoundrels (yellow) - all the main characters
The Saga (purple) - movie plots
A Galaxy Far, Far Away (green) - planets, cities, buildings, vehicles, etc.
Hyperspace (orange) - wild card
6. This 2019 game by Jeremy Hogg combines elements of fantasy gaming and roll-and-move turns as players must complete missions and defeat monsters to earn a specific something (often sought by heroes) to win the game. What is it, that is also the name of the game?

Answer: Glory

"Glory" is for two to four players and involves a number of quests, battles, and lairs (with bosses) to provide the means to earn glory points, with 20 points needed to win the game. Players move around a board by rolling dice, given various paths to follow, and certain types of action that can be taken, depending on what spot you land on.
7. Clue/Cluedo has been a family favourite since it first came out in 1949, but the 2016 updated version introduced a new character; female scientist Dr. Orchid. Which original housekeeping character was 'killed off' to make room for her?

Answer: Mrs. White

Dr. Orchid is given a backstory for her role in the game. She is the adopted daughter of Dr. Black, the owner of the mansion in which the game happens, but was raised by Mrs. White after being expelled from her boarding school (due to a mysterious near-fatal poisoning incident). She went on to get her Ph.D in plant toxicology.

Apart from the new character, the gameplay remains the same, with the object being to find out which of the six characters is the murderer (of Dr. Black/Mr. Boddy), where the deed took place, and with what weapon.
8. Why does the good guy always have to win? In this game, players get to choose to be one of six Disney baddies who are each trying to bring their evil plans to fruition. What is it called?

Answer: Villainous

Each player (two to six) controls a classic Disney villain, with the original choices being Captain Hook, Jafar, Maleficent, Prince John, the Queen of Hearts, or Ursula. Each of the villains has a different objective to achieve in order to win the game, but while trying to do that, they can also take actions to hinder the other villains' efforts.

The original release, subtitled "The Worst Takes It All" (2018) introduced the six baddies listed above. Subsequent expansions added more villains:

"Wicked to the Core" (March, 2019) - Dr. Faciler, the Evil Queen, and Hades
"Evil Comes Prepared" (July, 2019) - Ratigan, Scar, Yzma
"Perfectly Wretched" (March, 2020) - Cruella de Vil, Mother Gothel, Pete
"Despicable Plots" (February, 2021) - Gaston, the Horned King, Lady Tremaine
9. This 2019 game designed by Elizabeth Hargrave takes just four rounds to complete, and it is all about trying to attract the most different types of birds into your aviary. It might be a stretch, but do you know what is it called?

Answer: Wingspan

Not only is this game fun to play, but it is quite educational as you get to learn all about a large variety of birds. It is beautifully made with artistic renditions of all the birds (170 unique cards).

During your four rounds of play, you need to manage different factors to attract the various bird species, looking at everything from a bird's colours, their eggs, the size of their flocks, their habitat preference, and food supply. In the end, different birds have different point values, and you could also earn bonus points for achieving goals along the way.
10. "Monopoly" been around for a loooong time (since 1933), but in 2018, they published a variant with a couple of different catchphrases on the box cover, like 'What can you get away with?' and 'Get caught, get cuffed!' What is this variant called?

Answer: Cheater's Edition

"Monopoly Cheater's Edition" is not quite a free-for-all... there are still rules to follow, but there are instances when cheating is allowed (or should I say, encouraged). But you have to try to be surreptitious about it, because if you get caught, you go to jail (and have to wear a handcuff).

Differences from the original game are:

Cheat cards - placed on the board for all to see and any player can try to complete a cheat written on one of the cards;

No banker - on each person's turn, they manage the money (watch out for sticky fingers!);

Tricky Chance and Community Chest Cards - bribes allowed, send other players to jail, force others to charge reduced rent, etc;

Handcuffs - required to be worn when you are in jail;

The board - some different property values, no utilities or taxes, and the stations aren't for sale.
