Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. According to John 11:1-2, which of the below mentioned women was responsible for anointing the head of Jesus with an expensive, sweet smelling oil, not realizing at the time, that she was preparing him for his burial?

Answer: Mary sister of Martha

John 11: 1-2 Identifies Mary the sister of Lazarus and Martha, as the one who anointed the Lord with fragrant oil. Mark 14:3-8 states that the oil was in an alabaster flask and that it was costly. (And rightly so!)
When Mary was criticized for buying the expensive oil, Jesus told them to leave her alone, that she was preparing him for His burial.
2. What did Jesus say would happen as a result of Mary's kindness to Him? (she anointed Him?) Mark 14:9.

Answer: Her good deed would be a memorial to her

Jesus said that Mary's act of kindness to Him, (she anointed His head) would be spoken of where ever the gospel is preached. Her good deed He said, would be spoken of as a memorial to her and so even today, Mary and her alabaster box are spoken of. Mark 14:9.
3. As Jesus was being nailed to the cross they were many onlookers, including Mary. This Mary was identified as the wife of one of the below mentioned, do you know the name of her husband?

Answer: Clopas

According to John 19:25, Mary wife of Clopas was one of the women standing by the cross of Jesus along with His family and friends.
4. How many women answering to the name of "Mary," were standing by the cross of Jesus?

Answer: three

John 19:25 states that Mary Magdalene, Mary the wife of Clopas and Mary, His mother, were standing by His cross.
5. Looking on from afar and witnessing one of the most important events in Christendom was Mary Magdalene and another Mary. Which of the below mentioned was this Mary?

Answer: Mary the mother of James

Mark 15:40 states that Mary the mother of James, Mary Magdalene and Salome, were looking on from afar at the crucifixion of our Lord.
Little did they know at the time, that they were witnessing the birth of Christianity, the beginning and not the end of our savior.
6. I am Mary, mother of Jesus. Do you know the name of the person to whom my dutiful son entrusted me, as He was dying on the cross? John 19:25-27. (The Living Bible)

Answer: John

John 19:25-27 (The Living Bible) identifies John as the one Jesus asked to take care of His mother. This was the disciple that was referred to as "The one He loved." The Living Bible translates this passage in the first person. Verse 27 reads, "And to me[e] he said, 'She is your mother!' And from then on I took her into my home." This is based on the translator's assumption that the disciple to which it refers was the author of the Book of John. Most translations use the third person ("Then He said to the disciple, 'Behold your mother!' And from that hour that disciple took her to his own home." in the KJV), reflecting scholarly uncertainty as to the identity of the Beloved Disciple.
7. When Joseph of Arimathea took Jesus from His cross, who was observing the place where they laid Him, in order to go back and anoint His body with spices? Mark 15:43,46-47.

Answer: Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses

Mark 15:43,46-47 states that Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses (given as Joseph in some translations) observed where they had laid Him, so that they could return after the sabbath and anoint His body, as the custom was.
8. On the very first Good Friday, when Christ gave up his life to save mankind, His last words were said to be, "It is finished." Which group of the below mentioned women would have heard the most solemn, yet joyful words of our savior?

Answer: His mother, His aunt, Mary Magdalene and Mary, Clopas' wife.

John 19:25,30, tells us that Jesus' mother, His mother's sister, Mary Magdalene and Mary the wife of Clopas, were standing by His cross. By this we know, that His Friends and family were with Him to the end.
9. According to Matthew 28: 1-8 (NIV), who was standing there with Mary Magdalene, when the angel of the Lord revealed the most wonderful news to her, that Jesus who was crucified had risen?

Answer: The other Mary

Matthew 28:1-8 tells us that the other Mary and Mary Magdalene went to the tomb early on the morning of the first day of the week and an angel of the Lord told them the joyful news, that Christ who was crucified was alive. They then, with fear and joy, ran to tell His disciples the good news.

Chapter 27 refers to Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James and Joseph as being present at the crucifixion in verse 56. The next references all describe them as Mary Magdalene and the other Mary. There is some debate as to which James is referred to - some consider it to be James the son of Alphaeus (one of the apostles also known as James the Less), while some suggest it is James the Just, also called James the Brother of Jesus (but not necessarily a biological brother!) or yet another James. If you are one of those who consider it to refer to James the brother of Jesus, and take that to mean that his mother Mary was also the Mary who bore Jesus, then the other Mary might have been the mother of Jesus.
10. According to Mark 16:9, on that first Easter morn, who had the honor of being the first person to whom the risen Lord spoke?

Answer: Mary Magdalene

Mark 16:9 states that Mary Magdalene was the first person to whom Jesus appeared after His resurrection. What an honor and a privilege.
