Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Find the match for Leah. (Genesis 29:17)

Answer: Delicate eyes

Leah, the first wife of Jacob, was not as attractive as her sister Rachel as she had "delicate eyes", according to the NKJV. (The NIV uses the term "weak eyes".)

Genesis 29:16-18 states: "Now Laban had two daughters: the name of the elder was Leah, and the name of the younger was Rachel. Leah's eyes were delicate, but Rachel was beautiful of form and appearance. Now Jacob loved Rachel; so he said, 'I will serve you seven years for Rachel your younger daughter'."

Scripture goes on to tell of Jacob marrying Leah and Rachel with Leah largely feeling unloved even though initially she was bearing children and Rachel was barren.

According to Genesis 35:23, Leah was the mother of six sons: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar and Zebulun. Genesis 34:21 states she was also the mother of Dinah.
2. Find the match for Rebekah. (Genesis 25:20)

Answer: Mother of Jacob

Jacob's mother was Rebekah, as per Genesis 25:20. She was the first woman recorded in the Old Testament to give birth to twins. According to Scripture, Esau was born first and was followed by Jacob. Scripture goes on to state Isaac favored Esau while Rebekah favored Jacob. Their favoritism would result in problems in later life.
3. Find the match for Eleazer. (Numbers 20:28)

Answer: High priest

Eleazar, the son of Aaron and a nephew of Moses, was the high priest. According to Scripture, he ascended to the position after the death of his father.
Leviticus 10 tells of Elezar's brothers being struck dead for offering "profane fire" to the LORD with Eleazar and his brother Ithamar being named as their replacements. Numbers 20:28 tells of Aaron dying and Moses putting the priestly garments on Eleazar. Joshua 14 goes on to tell of Joshua and Eleazar dividing up tracts of land in Canaan for the twelve tribes. And the deaths of both Joshua and Eleazar are recorded in Joshua 24.
4. Find the match for Aaron. (Psalm 106:16 in NKJV)

Answer: Saint

In Psalm 106:16, in the KJV and the NKJV, Aaron is called a saint. (The NIV uses different wording, saying Aaron "was consecrated to the LORD.").

The verse tells of the Israelites wandering in the wilderness during their exodus out of Egypt to the Promised Land. To give the verse context, here's how Psalm 106:13-18 reads in the NKJV:
"They soon forgot His works;
They did not wait for His counsel,
But lusted exceedingly in the wilderness,
And tested God in the desert.
And He gave them their request,
But sent leanness into their soul.
When they envied Moses in the camp,
And Aaron the saint of the LORD,
The earth opened up and swallowed Dathan,
And covered the faction of Abiram.
A fire was kindled in their company;
The flame burned up the wicked."

Moses and Aaron formed a dynamic duo and Scripture reports they were used by the LORD to lead the Israelites out of Egypt. After ten vicious plagues -- everything from the Nile River turning into blood to the deaths of the country's firstborn -- the brothers finally received the Pharaoh's permission to leave Egypt and to head to the Promised Land.
5. Find the match for Solomon. (2 Samuel 12:24-25)

Answer: Jedidiah

According to Scripture, Jedidiah was the name Nathan the prophet had for Solomon. 2 Samuel 12:24-25, in the NKJV Bible, states: "Then David comforted Bathsheba his wife, and went in to her and lay with her. So she bore a son, and he called his name Solomon. Now the LORD loved him, and He sent word by the hand of Nathan the prophet: So he called his name Jedidiah, because of the LORD." According to notes in the NKJV Study Bible, Jedidiah means "Beloved of the Lord."
6. Find the match for Peninnah. (1 Samuel 1:4-7)

Answer: Hannah's adversary

Peninnah and Hannah were both married to Elkanah and according to Scripture, the two women didn't get along. In fact, it seems Penninah, who was the mother of children, took tremendous delight in taunting Hannah who was barren. 1 Samuel 1:6-7, in the NIV Bible states: "Because the LORD had closed Hannah's womb, her rival kept provoking her in order to irritate her.

This went on year after year. Whenever Hannah went up to the house of the LORD, her rival provoked her till she wept and would not eat." The chapter goes on to tell of Hannah fervently praying to the LORD and eventually giving birth to Samuel.
7. Find the match for Moses. (Deuteronomy 34:1-11)

Answer: Mount Nebo

Moses died on Mount Nemo in the land of Moab, according to the KJV, NKJV and the NIV. Deuteronomy 34:1 states the LORD took Moses to Mount Nemo where he could view the Promised Land the Israelites would be entering. Verse 5 tells of Moses' death and his burial in a valley in the land of Moab.

Here's how the account is told in Deuteronomy 34:1-6, in the NKJV:
"Then Moses went up from the plains of Moab to Mount Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, which is across from Jericho. And the LORD showed him all the land of Gilead as far as Dan, all Naphtali and the land of Ephraim and Manasseh, all the land of Judah as far as the Western Sea, the South, and the plain of the Valley of Jericho, the city of palm trees, as far as Zoar. Then the LORD said to him, 'This is the land of which I swore to give Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, saying, 'I will give it to your descendants.' I have caused you to see it with your eyes, but you shall not cross over there.' So Moses the servant of the LORD died there in the land of Moab, according to the word of the LORD. And He buried him in a valley in the land of Moab, opposite Beth Peor; but no one knows his grave to this day."
8. Find the match for Joshua. (Numbers 13:16)

Answer: Hoshea

Joshua's original name was Hoshea, according to Numbers 13:16. In the NKJV, it simply states: "These are the names of the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land. And Moses called Hoshea the son of Nun, Joshua."

Notes in the NKJV Study Bible offer this explanation of the name change: "Changing Hoshea's name to Joshua probably indicated great esteem on Moses' part. As God often changed the names of people who had a special relationship with Him, so Moses changed the name of the one who would eventually become his spiritual heir. This was an act of ritual adoption. Hoshea means 'Salvation'; Joshua means 'the Lord Saves.' Joshua and Jesus are two forms of the same name."
9. Find the match for Simeon and Levi. (Genesis 34:25-29)

Answer: Killing spree

Simeon and Levi went on a ruthless killing spree after Dinah was defiled by Shechem, according to Scripture. Dinah's two brothers killed every male in Shechem's hometown and took every woman and child captive and plundered every house. The massacre took place after Dinah's brothers convinced the males in Shechem's city they should circumcise themselves.

Genesis 34:25-29, in the NKJV Bible, states: "Now it came to pass on the third day, when they were in pain, that two of the sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brothers, each took his sword and came boldly upon the city and killed all the males. And they killed Hamor and Shechem his son with the edge of the sword, and took Dinah from Shechem's house, and went out. The sons of Jacob came upon the slain, and plundered the city, because their sister had been defiled. They took their sheep, their oxen, and their donkeys, what was in the city and what was in the field, and all their wealth. All their little ones and their wives they took captive; and they plundered even all that was in the houses."
10. Find the match for Gad. (Genesis 35:26)

Answer: Son of Zilpah

Zilpah was the handmaiden of Leah and after sleeping with Leah's husband Jacob, she bore two sons, Gad and Asher, as per Genesis 35:26. According to notes in the NKJV Study Bible, Gad loosely means 'fortune'. His name was selected by Zilpah.

According to Genesis 46:16, Gad had seven sons. Their names were Ziphion, Haggi, Shuni, Ezbon, Eri, Arodi, and Areli.
