Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What's the name of the new city John of Patmos writes about in Revelation that consists of two words, as per the NKJV and the NIV?

Answer: New Jerusalem

New Jerusalem is the correct answer. In Revelation, John of Patmos writes about two cities -- Babylon and the New Jerusalem. Readers of Revelation are told Babylon faces a horrific fate while New Jerusalem enjoys a glorious future. According to Wikipedia, New Jerusalem is also known as The Tabernacle of God, Holy City, City of God, Celestial City and Heavenly Jerusalem in the Book of Revelation, as well as Jerusalem Above, Zion and shining city on a hill in other books of the Bible. The New Jerusalem is first mentioned in Revelation 3:12. Much of the 21st chapter of Revelation is devoted to details about the New Jerusalem.

Tradition holds Revelation was written by John, one of the Twelve Disciples, and this is my view. However, some modern theologians have disputed the claim. As a result, I described the writer of the book as John of Patmos in the question.
2. Out of the four choices below, what one best describes Mary, the sister of Lazarus and Martha? (Luke 10:38-42)

Answer: Insightful

Mary was insightful while her sister Martha was industrious. They are, without question, the best known sisters in the New Testament. Details about Martha being busy while Mary was listening to the teachings of Jesus can be found in Luke 10:38-42. The story appears right after the famous parable known as The Good Samaritan.

Here's how Luke 10:38-42 tells of the incident in the NKJV:
"Now it happened as they went that He entered a certain village; and a certain woman named Martha welcomed Him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus' feet and heard His word. But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she approached Him and said, 'Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore tell her to help me.' And Jesus answered and said to her, 'Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her."
3. The 13th chapter of a particular book in the New Testament is regarded as the Love Chapter. Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles, is credited with writing the book that was addressed to believers in a resurrected Jesus Christ who lived in a Greek city. What's the name of the community?

Answer: Corinth

The Love Chapter appears in 1 Corinthians 13, a book written by Paul to members of the early church in Corinth. The modern city of Corinth is situated about three kilometres, or two miles, from the ancient city of Corinth. The new city was created after the original community was destroyed by an earthquake in 1858, according to Wikipedia.

The new city is about 78 kilometres, or 48 miles, southwest of Athens, Wikipedia reports.
4. What's the name of the man from Ephesus who was commended by Paul for his service? (2 Timothy 1:16-18)

Answer: Onesiphorous

Not much is known about Onesiphorus. However, it's apparent Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles, was grateful for the assistance he received from Onesiphorus. In 2 Timothy 1:16-18, in the NKJV Bible, he writes: "The Lord grant mercy to the household of Onesiphorus, for he often refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chain; but when he arrived in Rome, he sought me out very zealously and found me. The Lord grant to him that he may find mercy from the Lord in that Day -- and you know very well how many ways he ministered to me at Ephesus."

According to notes in the NKJV Study Bible, Onesiphorus means 'Help Bringer'.
5. What was the name of the Jewish woman who was married to Felix, governor of Judea, as per Acts 24:24?

Answer: Drusilla

Drusilla was a Jewish woman who was married to Felix, governor of Judea when the apostle Paul appeared before him. According to the Website Biblical-Baby-Names.com Drusilla means 'watered by the dew.' The same Website states she was the daughter of Herod Agrippa. Drusilla is mentioned in only passing reference in Scripture.
6. What was the name of the woman in the early church at Philippi who was apparently at loggerheads with Syntyche, as per Philippians 4:2?

Answer: Euodia

Euodia and Syntyche did not get along, it seems. This even though they both labored with Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles. However, little light is shed on the situation. In Philippians 4:2-3, in the NKJV Bible, Paul writes: "I implore Euodia and I implore Syntyche to be of the same mind in the Lord. And I urge you also, true companion, help these women who labored with me in the gospel, with Clement also, and the rest of my fellow workers, whose names are in the Book of Life." Philippi is the same community in which Paul converted Lydia and her family as well as the jailer and his family to Christianity. Details of their conversion are found in Acts 16:11-40.
7. In the order the books appear in the New Testament, who wrote the first Gospel?

Answer: Matthew

In the order the books appear, Matthew wrote the first Gospel of the New Testament. The traditional belief is the writer is the same person who served as one of the Twelve Disciples of Jesus. If this is the case, he was a Jewish tax collector. Matthew quotes more passages from the Old Testament than any New Testament writer, according to notes in the NKJV Study Bible.
8. Onesimus was a run-away slave who the apostle Paul converted to Christianity. In Philemon 1:11 in the New International Version Bible, how does Paul describe Onesimus?

Answer: Useful

The correct answer is 'useful.' (In the NKJV, Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles, describes Onesimus as 'profitable',) Paul is using a pun in the passage as Onesimus' name, according to notes in the NIV Study Bible, means 'useful'. In Philemon 1:10-11, Paul writes to Philemon, the owner of the runaway slave: "...that I appeal to you for my son Onesimus, who became my son while I was in chains. Formerly he was useless to you, but now he has become useful both to you and to me."

It was a 'classic small-world story'. Paul was involved in instructing the early church in Colosse of which Philemon was one of the members. Philemon's slave Onesimus runs away and goes to Rome and wouldn't you know it, he meets Paul and is converted to Christianity.
9. Who helped Jesus carry the cross to His crucifixion, as per Matthew 27:32, Mark 15:21 and Luke 23:26?

Answer: Simon of Cyrene

Simon of Cyrene is the correct answer. Little is known about Simon, but Mark 15:21 states he was the father of Alexander and Rufus. According to the
International Standard Bible Encyclopedia, Cyrene was a city of Libya in North Africa. It was separated from ancient Egypt by a portion of the Libyan desert.
10. Now take the first letter of the nine answers to come up with the name of a man who is part of an account in one of the four Gospels.

Answer: Nicodemus

Nicodemus is the correct answer.

He is the Pharisee who met with Jesus in the evening, according to the third chapter of the Gospel of John. There is considerable conjecture as to why Nicodemus visited Jesus at night.

One school of thought has it that Nicodemus didn't want it to be known that as a teacher of the law, he had any interest in Jesus' teachings as Christ was often surrounded by tax collectors and the dregs of society. Another school of thought has it Nicodemus had no choice but to visit Jesus at night if he wanted a one-on-one meeting because Christ was always surrounded by large crowds in the day time.

In John 3:3, Jesus tells Nicodemus no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again. Then in verse 16, Jesus makes the famous declaration: "For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life." It's that statement which has become a pillar of the evangelical Christian movement.
