Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Acts 17:10-13 tells of Paul and Silas leaving Thessalonica and going to another community where the people received the Gospel message with "great eagerness." What was the name of the city in which Paul and Silas had so much success?

Answer: Berea

The correct answer is Berea. As a result of the work of Paul and Silas, Scripture states "many of them believed, and also not a few of the Greeks, prominent women as well as men." According to Wikipedia, Berea is now known as Veria (or Voria) and is "is a small city on the eastern side of Vermion Mountains, north of Mount Olympus" in Greece.
2. Out of the four names below, which one is not found in the New Testament?

Answer: Omri

Omri is the correct answer. Lois and Eunice are both mentioned in 2 Timothy 1:5 while Andronicus is mentioned in Romans 16:7. Lois was the grandmother of Timothy and Eunice was his mother. Meanwhile, the apostle Paul describes Andronicus as a "countryman and a fellow prisoner" in the NKJV.

According to the 16th chapter of 1 Kings, Omri became king when Elah was murdered by Zimri at Tirzah. Previously, Omri was commander of the army, as per 1 Kings 16:16. For some time, there was opposition to his reign with a portion of the population supporting Tibni to become king.

1 Kings 16:21-22, in the NKJV, states: "Then the people of Israel were divided into two parts: half of the people followed Tibni the son of Ginath, to make him king, and half followed Omri. But the people who followed Omri prevailed over the people who followed Tibni the son of Ginath. So Tibni died and Omri reigned."
3. In Acts 6:5, we read about Philip being appointed as one of the seven disciples for the Grecian Jewish believers in the early church. (Some people mistakenly think the Philip mentioned here is the one who served as one of the original twelve disciples.) Acts 8:26, in the NKJV Bible, tells of Philip being directed to "go toward the south along the road which goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza." Who gave him this message?

Answer: Angel of the Lord

The correct answer is an angel of the Lord told Philip to "go toward the south along the road which goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza." The name of the angel is unknown as no further details are given. Incidentally, only two angels are mentioned by name in the Old Testament and the New Testament of the KJV, NKJV and NIV -- Michael and Gabriel.

In the vast majority of instances when an angel is involved in an account, Scripture simply refers to them as "an angel of the Lord."
4. What was the name of the centurion who was at the crucifixion scene and made the statement Jesus was "truly the Son of God"?

Answer: No name is given

No name is given of the centurion. His statement "truly this Man was the Son of God!" appears in Mark 15:39. Although centurions were part of a ruthless Roman killing machine, they are portrayed in remarkably good light in the New Testament. For example, two centurions portrayed in a good light in the New Testament are Cornelius (Acts 10:1-48) and Julius (Acts 21:1-43).
5. After the Prodigal Son spent everything he had on wild living, a severe famine took place. What did he do to survive? (Luke 15:15)

Answer: Ended up feeding pigs

Scripture says the Prodigal Son hired himself out to a man who sent him to his fields to feed pigs. Ending up in such circumstances would be almost unthinkable for a Jew as pigs were seen as unclean and strictly forbidden from the diet. Feeding pigs would be seen as the lowest of the low among jobs, perhaps on the same scale today as that of a toilet bowl cleaner.

The parable of the Prodigal Son, however, has a happy ending. According to Scripture the son returned to his father who welcomed him back with open arms. (Luke 15:20). The parable is found in only the Gospel of Luke.
6. As per Acts 19, out of the four events below, what one is best associated with Paul and his workers in the early church at Ephesus?

Answer: Riot

A riot erupted at Ephesus, according to Acts 19:21-41 with Demetrius playing a key role in whipping a crowd into a frenzy against Paul and his workers. Acts 19:24 in the NKJV reports Demetrius was a silversmith who made silver shrines of Diana and he was livid because Paul was convincing people to follow Jesus and no longer have shrines of Diana. (In the NIV, it states Demetrius made shrines of Artemus.)

Acts 19:29 tells of a mob seizing two of Paul's workers, Gaius and Aristarchus, and taking them to a theater where an angry crowd shouted for two hours straight "Great is Diana of the Ephesians!". Eventually, the mob ran out of steam and went home.
7. According to Mark 5:1 in the NKJV, in what region did the demonically-possessed man sometimes referred to as Legion live?

Answer: Gadarenes

The correct answer is Gadarenes. (The NIV refers to the locale as Gerasenes.) The area is near the eastern shore of the Sea of Galilee and is in present day Jordan, according to Wikipedia.

The account of Jesus healing the demonically-possessed man is found in Mark 5:1-20. According to Scripture, the demons inside the man identified themselves as 'Legion' for they were many in number. The presence of Jesus, however, made the demons anxious and they sought permission from Him to enter a herd of swine which would end up drowning in the water.

Mark 5:6-13 explains things this way in the NKJV: "When he [the demonically-possessed man] saw Jesus from afar, he ran and worshiped Him. And he cried out with a loud voice and said, 'What have I to do with You, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I implore You by God that You do not torment me.'For He said to him, 'Come out of the man, unclean spirit!' Then He asked him, 'What is your name?' And he answered, saying, 'My name is Legion; for we are many.' Also he begged Him earnestly that He would not send them out of the country. Now a large herd of swine was feeding there near the mountains. So all the demons begged Him, saying, 'Send us to the swine, that we may enter them.' And at once Jesus gave them permission. Then the unclean spirits went out and entered the swine (there were about two thousand); and the herd ran violently down the steep place into the sea, and drowned in the sea."
8. In Revelation 4:7, John of Patmos writes about seeing four living creatures. What is the fourth living creature?

Answer: Eagle

The fourth living creature was like an eagle, according to Scripture. It's often difficult to come up with an explanation of what is recorded in Revelation as there are so many different views on the book. In my opinion, I see the book as the Tale of Two Cities -- Babylon the Fallen and the New Jerusalem.

With that disclaimer out of the way, here's how Revelation 4:6-8, reads in the NKJV Bible: "Before the throne there was a sea of glass, like crystal. And in the midst of the throne, and around the throne, were four living creatures full of eyes in front and in back. The first living creature was like a lion, the second living creature like a calf, the third living creature had a face like a man, and the fourth living creature was like a flying eagle. The four living creatures, each having six wings, were full of eyes around and within. And they do not rest day or night, saying: 'Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, Who was and is and is to come!'"
9. Out of the four people below, which one is associated with 'having had five husbands', as per John 4:18?

Answer: Samaritan woman at the well

According to the fourth chapter of John, an unnamed Samaritan woman who had five husbands met Jesus at Jacob's well. John 4:18, in the NKJV, quotes Jesus telling the woman, "The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband."

In John 4:13-14, Jesus makes the famous declaration to the woman: "'Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.'"
10. Now take the first letter of each answer to come up with a nine-letter nickname found in the New Testament.

Answer: Boanerges

Boanerges is the correct answer. According to Mark 3:17, Boanerges was the name Jesus gave to John and James, two of His twelve disciples. (Using the KJV, NKJV and the NIV, Boanerges is found in only Mark 3:17) The verse states Boanerges means 'Sons of Thunder'. According to Scripture, Zebedee was the father of John and James.

Many theologians believe their mother's name was Salome but there is no smoking gun.
