Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Jacob was born a twin. Why did his parents, Isaac and Rebekah, name him "heel-grabber"?

Answer: He was born grabbing his twin brother's heel.

While Rebekah was pregnant, the twins wrestled in her. God told her, ""Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples from within you will be separated;
one people will be stronger than the other, and the older will serve the younger."

When the boys were born, they named the firstborn Esau because he was red and "hairy". Shortly behind Esau came Jacob, who was born grabbing his twin brother's heel. Because of the event, Isaac and Rebekah named him "Heel grabber", which also means "cheater". (Genesis 25:21-26, NIV)
2. Jacob and his brother Esau were as opposite as night and day. Esau was a hunter and was loved by his father. What did Jacob like to do?

Answer: He loved to stay at home and help his mother.

"The boys grew up, and Esau became a skillful hunter, a man of the open country, while Jacob was content to stay at home among the tents. Isaac, who had a taste for wild game, loved Esau, but Rebekah loved Jacob." (Genesis 25: 27-28, NIV)
3. Esau was the firstborn and by tradition was first in line to inherit all his father had. How did Jacob steal his brother's birthright?

Answer: Taking advantage of Esau's hunger, he sold a bowl of food for the birthright.

Once when Jacob was cooking some stew, Esau came in from the open country, famished. Esau had hunted all day and had found nothing for food. When he saw his brother cooking, Esau said to Jacob, "Quick, let me have some of that red stew! I'm famished!" Jacob replied, "First sell me your birthright.""Look, I am about to die," Esau said. "What good is the birthright to me?" But Jacob said, "Swear to me first." So he swore an oath to him, selling his birthright to Jacob.

Then Jacob gave Esau some bread and some lentil stew.

He ate and drank, and then got up and left. Esau hated his birthright after that because Jacob had taken it from him. (Genesis 25:29-34, NIV)
4. Jacob's tricks continued. When their father was about to die, how did Jacob steal the blessing from his brother?

Answer: With his mom's help, he dressed up in goat skin and disguised himself as Esau to his father.

Isaac called Esau and told him to go hunting. Isaac wanted a juicy steak for his last meal before he blessed Esau. While Esau was out, Jacob's mother came to him and told him to get dressed...in goat's skin. She prepared a meal for Isaac and sent Jacob in. Isaac was so blind, he felt Jacob to see if he was hairy, to make sure he had the right twin.

The goat skin worked! By the time Esau and Isaac realized what had happened, Jacob was long gone with the blessing. (Genesis 26-27, NIV)
5. Up until he met this man, Jacob had been a trickster. What was the name of the dishonest uncle Jacob went to live with when Esau swore to kill him?

Answer: Laban

Jacob's mother and father both blessed him and told him to go to Laban, Rebekah's brother. They hoped Jacob would be safe at his uncle's house until Esau's wrath subsided. They also hoped he would find a wife in his uncle's country. However Jacob would meet his match in trickery. (Genesis 28:1-5, NIV)
6. Jacob worked for his uncle as a shepherd and saw that his daughter Rachael was very beautiful. How many years did Jacob agree to work so he could marry her?

Answer: 7

When Jacob first came to his uncle's house, he saw Rachael and she was beautiful! She helped tend her father's sheep. Jacob was instantly in love with her and helped her water his uncle's flocks. When his uncle came to him and told him to stay, he asked what he should pay Jacob for his labor. Jacob agreed to work seven years for Rachael. (Genesis 29:9-20, NIV)
7. Jacob worked very hard for Rachel, but on the wedding night his uncle tricked him into marrying another. What was the name of Jacob's first wife?

Answer: Leah

Jacob's uncle promised to give him Rachael. A huge wedding ceremony was held and a magnificent feast. However Jacob was shocked and dismayed when he realized that it was Leah, not Rachael, who was in his tent that night. Angry, he went straight to his uncle! His uncle told him that it was a dishonor to marry the younger sister before the oldest.

He told Jacob if he worked seven more years, he could have Rachael as promised. Jacob agreed. He worked very hard but his love for Rachael was so strong, it only seemed like a few days instead of years.

In the end he had two wives instead of one. (Genesis 29:20-30, NIV)
8. God blessed Jacob with many sons. However Jacob's uncle and his cousins continually made things hard for them. After what son's birth did Jacob decide to leave his uncle's house?

Answer: Joseph

Joseph was Rachael's firstborn, and the son of his favorite wife. When Joseph was born, Jacob decided it was time to move. So Jacob called both his wives together. Jacob told them, "I see that your father does not show me as much favor as he did before.

But the God of my father has been with me. You know that I have worked for your father with all my strength. Yet your father has not been fair with me. He has changed my pay ten times. But God did not let him hurt me." So Jacob and his family packed up all they had and left. Rachael secretly stole her father's idols and took them with her. (Genesis 31-32, NIV)
9. Jacob was afraid for his life when he heard his brother Esau was coming to meet him. He divided his family, then went alone to pray. Who did Jacob meet and wrestle with that night for a blessing?

Answer: an angel

Jacob was afraid Esau would kill him and his family for all the deceptive things he did when he was younger. He split his family up into two groups and sent them away without him. That night he prayed for God to help him. During the night an angel came and Jacob wrestled with him. "Bless me!," Jacob cried.

The angel replied, "I can't!" The angel touched Jacob's hip and injured it but Jacob would not let him go. Finally the angel said, "It is almost dawn and I must go. I cannot bless Jacob, a cheater. Your name shall no longer be Jacob, but Israel; for you have striven with God and with men and have prevailed." Jacob released the angel and praised God because he had seen God face to face. (Genesis 32, NIV)
10. Jacob was now a prince in God's eyes, but still had to face his past. What did Esau do when he saw Jacob?

Answer: He hugged his brother Jacob and wept.

Jacob was afraid when he saw Esau coming with 400 men. However when Esau saw Jacob, he ran to his brother and hugged him. The two brothers both cried. Jacob told Esau everything God had done for him and even showed his brother his family. The two were finally united again! Jacob's mother had died, but Jacob did get to see his father again. God blessed Jacob and all that he had.

His sons became forefathers of the nation of Israel. (Genesis 34, NIV)
