Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the book of Genesis, God told Noah the earth was violent. In Genesis 5:13 (NIV), what did God say He would destroy with a flood?

Answer: every creature on earth

According to Genesis, Noah lived in a time where people made God sad with their bad actions. Noah was a man that tried to please God and did things that were good. When God decided to flood the earth with water, an event like that had never happened before. God told Noah it would destroy all the people, birds, and animals that lived on the land.

"The Lord regretted that he had made human beings on the earth, and his heart was deeply troubled. So the Lord said, 'I will wipe from the face of the earth the human race I have created-and with them the animals, the birds and the creatures that move along the ground-for I regret that I have made them.' But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord." (Genesis 5:6-8,NIV)

"So God said to Noah, 'I am going to put an end to all people, for the earth is filled with violence because of them. I am surely going to destroy both them and the earth.'" (Genesis 5:13, NIV)
2. In Genesis, Noah built an ark according to the instructions God gave him. According to Genesis 5:14 (NIV), what kind of material did Noah use?

Answer: wood

Many of the things we use to build boats and houses were not available in Noah's day. Noah didn't have plastic, steel, concrete, or rubber.
According to Genesis 5:14 (NIV), God told Noah, "Make yourself an ark of cypress wood. Make rooms in it and coat it with pitch inside and out." Pitch was like a hot tar that made a boat waterproof. Noah had to make multiple rooms to hold all the people, food, and animals that would be with him during the flood.
3. In Genesis 6:10 (NIV) God made a covenant, which is a promise, to protect Noah and his family. Did Noah's family help him build the ark?

Answer: Yes

Noah's entire family helped with the tasks that God had asked him to do. (Genesis 6:10,7:13,NIV)

Noah's three sons (Ham, Shem, and Japheth) helped Noah with building the ark and taking care of the animals.

Noah's wife and his son's wives also helped with gathering food and supplies. They had to gather enough food for their family and all the animals. According to the Bible (Genesis 7,NIV), it is estimated that they spent over 370 days on the ark, which is over a year's supply of food.
4. In Genesis 6:15 (NIV), God told Noah to build the ark about 510 feet long and over 50 feet high. How many American football fields would the ark have covered?

Answer: 1.5

God told Noah, "This is how you are to build it: The ark is to be three hundred cubits long, fifty cubits wide and thirty cubits high." (Genesis 6:15, NIV)

The ark was about 510 ft long, almost the size of one and a half football fields. According to the Creationist Museum, it would be big enough that three NASA space shuttles could fit nose to tail on the Ark's roof.

The height of the ark was over 50 feet. According to the Creationist Museum, that would be a little taller than a four story house.
5. Most of the animals Noah gathered were in pairs of male and female. Which animals did Noah gather seven pairs of each kind?

Answer: animals used for sacrifices and food

God told Noah in Genesis 6:20 (NIV), to take a male and female of every kind of animal on the earth. He also told Noah in Genesis 7:2-3, (NIV), "Take with you seven pairs of every kind of clean animal, a male and its mate, and one pair of every kind of unclean animal, a male and its mate, and also seven pairs of every kind of bird, male and female, to keep their various kinds alive throughout the earth."

Noah was responsible for taking care of all the animals and keeping them alive on the ark till after the flood. However, some of the animals were used to provide food, clothes, and necessities for Noah and his family. Noah used some of the animals in worship sacrifices.
6. While Noah built the ark, he told people about the flood that was coming. How did people respond?

Answer: laughed at him

According to Hebrews 11:7, 1 Peter 3:20-21, and Matthew 24:37-39, (NIV) Noah tried to tell people about the flood that was coming.

People did not believe that Noah was telling the truth. Many of them laughed and continued on with their normal activity.

When God told Noah to enter the ark with all the animals, Noah and his family were the only humans on the boat.
7. When the ark was complete, Noah went into the ark with all the animals and his family. According to Genesis 7:16 (NIV), who shut the only door to the ark?

Answer: God

According to Genesis 7:4 (NIV), God told Noah, his family, and all the animals to go inside the ark when the ark was completed. God waited seven days before shutting the door, allowing anyone from the outside to join Noah. At the end of the seventh day, God shut the door. (Genesis 7:16, NIV) No one outside could come in and no one inside could leave.

When the door was shut, the rain started falling and the waters from the oceans started rising.
8. According to Genesis 7 (NIV), the floodwaters rained until the highest mountains were underwater and every living creature on land died.

Answer: True

According to Genesis 7:18-21, (NIV), the rain continued and the oceans rose until the water was over 22 feet above the highest mountains. All the birds, land animals, and humans that were not in the ark died as a result.

"The waters rose and increased greatly on the earth, and the ark floated on the surface of the water. They rose greatly on the earth, and all the high mountains under the entire heavens were covered. The waters rose and covered the mountains to a depth of more than fifteen cubits. Every living thing that moved on land perished-birds, livestock, wild animals, all the creatures that swarm over the earth, and all mankind. (Genesis 7:18-21, NIV)

It took the water over 150 days to lower. (Genesis 7:24, NIV)
9. According to Genesis 8:6-13 (NIV), after the rain stopped Noah sent out two birds to check and see when it was safe to leave the ark. What were they?

Answer: a raven and a dove

When the rains stopped and the water started to go down, Noah sent out a raven. The raven could not find a place to land and returned. After waiting a few more days, Noah sent out a dove.

The dove also could not find a place to land. Noah waited a little longer before sending out the dove again. The second time the dove went out, it came back with an olive branch.

When Noah saw the olive branch he knew that the waters were going down. The third time he sent out the dove, the dove did not return because it found a home. Noah took the dove's actions as a sign that they would be able to leave the ark very soon. He looked outside the ark and saw that the land was dry. (Genesis 8:6-13, NIV)
10. When Noah left the ark, he wanted to tell his God "thank you" by building an altar. According to Genesis 9:12-16 (NIV), God was so pleased with Noah's actions, what did He put in the sky as a promise He would never flood the earth again?

Answer: a rainbow

In Genesis, God told Noah and all the animals to come out from the ark. Noah built an altar and worshipped God for saving him and his family.

God was so moved at Noah's thankfulness, that he made a promise to Noah. He told Noah, "I will put a rainbow in the sky. Whenever I bring rain and clouds, I will see my rainbow and remember my promise to you that I will never flood the earth again."

God blessed Noah and his family. He told them to go out into the earth and multiply. (Genesis 8:21, Genesis 9:12-16, NIV)
